Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by naughtyshorty on Oct 9, 2013 10:29:52 GMT 1, Interesting point with the dog stencil there- I too was convinced it wasn't a banksy, as it just don't look like his style as I think of it. I'm not sure that he wants his stuff removed- that doesn't feel right to me. I guess he just looks at things from a locational perspective and that's it. Makes no diff what he paints on as it all seems to get lifted in the end!

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Agent Provocateur on Oct 9, 2013 11:59:46 GMT 1, "I wanted to make some art without the price tag attached. There's no gallery show or book or film. It's pointless. Which hopefully means something." Banksy Kudos.
Did anyone else notice Banksy's answers (overall) in the interview are more low key and reflective, less witty one liners (there's obviously some), with much more insight than we've heard before into how he feels personally? He sort of mulls his success and notoriety, from where he started as an illegal graffiti writer, to the unique position he's in now as a celebrity and 'target' (from other graffiti artists or anyone that sees the commercial gain in his work)? He even discusses his plans for 'Better out than in' (and his future) in a normal non 'smoke and mirrors' sort of way, honest and to the point.
The self-deprecating way he discusses the conflict of graffiti's ethos, it's unnatural association with success and monetary gain, makes me feel there is quite a bit of disillusionment with how his career has changed... and with this show he's trying to get back on track, doing what he loves, where he's in control and does what he wants.
"I started painting on the street because it was the only venue that would give me a show," he writes. "Now I have to keep painting on the street to prove to myself it wasn't a cynical plan. Plus it saves money on having to buy canvases.
"But there's no way round it—commercial success is a mark of failure for a graffiti artist. We're not supposed to be embraced in that way. When you look at how society rewards so many of the wrong people, it's hard not to view financial reimbursement as a badge of self-serving mediocrity."
Don't get me wrong tho, he's a big boy and can obviously handle 99% of what's thrown at him, I just feel a subtle re-alignment of his values, taking a step back to move several steps forward. And as usual moving the goal posts once more...

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Agent Provocateur on Oct 9, 2013 12:06:10 GMT 1, Banksy's reply in the interview wenters:
Asked to elaborate on the two paintings reproduced on this week's Voice cover—specifically, about how he intends to display the works, both collaborations with the Brazilian graffiti twosome Os Gêmeos (aka identical twins Otávio and Gustavo Pandolfo)—Banksy responds, "To be honest, I'm not sure. I'm figuring a lot of this out as I go along. Which is one way to keep it fresh, I suppose. The idea to make a stencil saying 'The Musical' only came up when I saw the 'Occupy' graffiti."

And as usual moving the goal posts once more... It does make you reflect and also show why maybe he has been so quiet, midlife art crisis possibly. I think its good he is in NY possibly why he chose the city. I would hope he is taking time to hang with guys like the twins and possibly Barry as I know Barry was in town recently. This might be something of a recharging and not listening to his PR team about what might be a good move.
As the work is starting to play out and with the context of this interview the whole project is getting clearer. As he stated the work is just off the cuff mostly, and I am sure he is getting thoughts and concepts done that he has had for awhile thus the chaotic nature of the pieces. Artist in residence exactly defines the work nothing too deep no master narrative, just an artist painting in a city he is visiting. I am gaining more respect for Banksy as this moves forward, not because of anything other than he is doing it his way, yet not turning his back on what graffiti has given him.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Coach on Oct 9, 2013 13:34:16 GMT 1, Just caught up with this thread. It's hard to keep up!
Just a couple of observations, as pretty much everything has already been said.
First, thanks for posting the interview. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Banksy comes accross very well I thought. Both witty and thoughtful. Always assumed he was both, from his artwork.
Second, a collab with the twins! It must be Xmas!!

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Neate Michael on Oct 9, 2013 13:53:01 GMT 1, Could a collab with Banksy be the twins first ever ltd edt print ? If you read the interview with Banksy, it would appear unlikely it would be made a print. It seems entirely possible that he could be through with those for the moment.
Although *IF* it was a print, out of curiosity, which would you prefer if you could only have one? The one with the OS characters, and the single Banksy armed policeman, or the one with all the Banksy armed police and the single OS character..:
It would be OS one for me... (and the one Banksy cop)
