Early Banksy Art, by met on Nov 1, 2019 17:23:58 GMT 1, Similar in style to the work he put up in 1999 at the Carlton Arms Hotel in NYC: [...] I love it when people come out and say he cant paint because of using stencils.. 20 years ago he was making work that's still better than 99% of his haters.
With this use of comparative language about making work, it sounds as if you're suggesting Ban ksy's art is disliked by a large number of his fellow artists. Although I'm unaware of many who've been openly critical, it would be interesting to hear the ones whose work you believe is better than Ban ksy's โ namely, which specific "hater" artists you place in the 1% category. This isn't about who I think is better or not, theres a known rift of graffiti artists hating on stencils and banksy in particular as it's not 'proper art' or 'he cant paint'. When the fact is that he was a top notch skilled writer long before he touched a stencil.
No worries, I misunderstood your initial post. My impression had been you'd compared Banksy's work against that of specific artist detractors to arrive at your conclusion.
The interest for me here was that (leaving aside unverifiable, general assertions sometimes made about the subject), I was aware of very few artists who've publicly criticised Banksy's work. So if there had been any particular names you were referring to, I'd have researched their art and made the comparison myself to see if our opinions aligned โ regarding both your 99% group and, of greater curiosity to me, the 1% group.
__________
As for the use of stencils being controversial within traditional graffiti culture, I don't believe anyone would disagree with you. We could also broaden this to cover the graffiti scene's ambivalence towards street art more generally, including legal murals.
That said, I have yet to personally witness graffiti writers deny that Banksy's work is "proper art". Many don't even refer to themselves as artists. [They may see themselves as just writers, taggers or vandals, who should be judged by different (or additional) criteria โ like prolificness, level of destruction caused, or the difficulty, risk and danger involved in getting up at certain locations.] The criticism I actually have seen expressed is that Banksy's stencil-based work is not proper graffiti โ this, however, being a different argument altogether.
With respect to "he can't paint", I've never heard this coming from another artist or writer. The closest would be self-deprecating remarks by Banksy himself regarding his own skill set. Or regular comments by non-artists about feet and hands not being his strong suit.
I donโt think any specific graffiti writers but as a whole I think the whole thing about being a stencil artist has been frowned upon by hardcore writers for years. In relation to this point, I suspect we are all on the same page.

@cozycurvature โ Thank you for posting all of your photos. I would probably never otherwise have seen this early work.

Early Banksy Art, by Prescription Art on Nov 5, 2019 20:44:35 GMT 1, I saw that in a prominent position at one of the art fairs in Miami last year. It looked like the fakest fake Banksy i had ever seen. Are you telling me it's actually real cosmic ?

but i am happy to be proven wrong!

Even being that early i find that extremely surprising... i didnโt even consider that it could possibly be real!

Isn't the tag wrong for the period? Should be a capital "A" or one with an opening upper left. Or even a different font like the "robber kids"? The one used here is much later, no?

"Mr Pelling โ Step into my office..."
This is Banksy cheerfully goading Andrew Pelling*, in a "Catch me if you can" kind of way.
At the time, Pelling was chair of the Graffiti Investigative Committee at the Greater London Authority (GLA).
__________
The location is where Monkey Queen was later painted for Banksy's anti-Jubilee street party in May 2002, marking Elizabeth II's 50-year reign:

Early Banksy Art, by hnkpnk on Nov 6, 2019 22:59:49 GMT 1, Absolutely awesome never seen this piece before ! I saw that in MOCO Amsterdam last month, but dismissed it as fake. Is it really a confirmed Banksy piece? The style is wrong especially for 2002. And I've never seen pictures of it before. I'll be damned. There it is in the background (to the left):
