Rest in Peace Nelson, by Coach on Dec 7, 2013 22:02:00 GMT 1, I have been reading about Mandela's trial speech, having heard a radio program about it.
The full speech can be read here:
www.news24.com/NelsonMandela/Speeches/FULL-TEXT-Mandelas-Rivonia-Trial-Speech-20110124
And the speech can be heard here:
www.theguardian.com/greatspeeches/mandela/0,,2060099,00.html
The final paragraph is very famous. The program I heard said that Mandela was daring the judge to sentence him to death. I heard an interview with Mandela, in which he sid that he closed his file, knowing the final paragraph off by heart. He said that he looked the judge in the eye when he said it, and that the judge did not once look back at him thereafter.
Mandela also said that when he said he was prepared to die, women in the court room gasped and screamed.
Perhaps one of the most important speeches in history?
This is the final paragraph:
"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

I remember hearing this speech numerous times over the decades but didn't understand the gravity of what Madiba said until I began to experience life. The judge dare not put him to death because the powers that be feared the backlash and they believed they could contain and diminish his ideals by locking him up.
In my opinion this speech surpasses the "I have a dream" speech of Martin Luther King. Madiba wanted freedom for the oppressed the world over.
I remember seeing the Peace and Reconcilation Hearings. They were distressing, powerful and demonstrated the power of forgiveness. Madiba facilitated forgiveness on both sides.
Madiba's neither a myth nor a God. He's a man who through forgiveness showed us what is possible.
