OS Gemeos ๐ง๐ท Sรฃo Paulo Graffiti โข Brazil Street Art, by jB on Oct 15, 2008 3:42:32 GMT 1, I also think Os Gemeos is about as good as it gets -- their street work is unreal -- they were one of the reasons I became fan of street art as we know it-- in the late 90's I remember see in a juxtapoz magazine where they did a character on the entire side of a 10 story building (pre banksy) and I was blown away -- someone really got a great piece today with the canvas above -- only in my dreams!

OS Gemeos ๐ง๐ท Sรฃo Paulo Graffiti โข Brazil Street Art, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 15, 2008 4:30:17 GMT 1, thanks for the info hc. can anyone translate Portuguese / english for us ?
Done, but this took me ages! So please don't ask me to become the forum translator! If there are a few mistakes in translation, I apologise and anyone please feel free to correct me. Some of the quotes are a bit "out there" so as stated, forgive me if I haven't 100% got it perfect. I think it's very close though.
Paintings of strong, colourful tones, fantastic scenes, extracts of dreams, realityโs routines and the recurring images of red and yellow people, which appear on instruments and speakers, are some notable characteristics of the contemporary production of the 2 brothers Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo (34 yrs old). Together they are โOs Gemeos,โ who in May painted the face of a Scottish castle and have had work exhibited at the famous Tate Modern of London and the Deitch Gallery of New York.
For the first time in Curitiba, the duo is presenting 9 brand new works. They are 6 panels, each 1.5m (unclear whether this is height/length etc โ probably height at a guess), 2 sculptures and a new interactive installation โOs Musicosโ (โThe Musiciansโ). Os Gemeos have worked on these pieces for the past 5 months. With a collective effort the exhibition is sponsored and enabled by the Paranense Energy Company, the Ministry of Culture, the government of Parana, the secretary of state for culture and Caixa (largest Brazilian Bank).
One of the biggest attractions is the mobile sculpture, as yet untitled, which relies on the support of the chassis from a VW Beetle, with head and hands. โWhen we do a piece of art, we hope for it to speak itsโ name to usโ, confirms Gustavo. The head has mechanical movements of the eyes and the mouth. After the end of this showing, the hands will also gain articulated motion. In the future the artists plan to use the sculpture in street exhibitions and public places. For the artist, this is a masculine object. The sculpture โwill dialogue with another, feminine objectโ, a cube-head hung from the ceiling of the exhibit with itsโ interior totally mirrored. โThe visitors will be able to enter it (the big cube-head) and see themselves. It will send itsโ own โIโ, in dialogue with the masculine sculpture.โ (Personally I think heโs on acid! ;D)
Another big attraction is the installation โOs Musicosโ (the musicians). Composed of 30 speakers, megaphone, guitar, bass, violin and drums, all painted with the red and yellow characters. โEven though they donโt know how to play, we want the people to play, to express themselves. The speakers will act as the visitorโs spokesperson.โ To complete the scenery of the showing of this piece, Os Gemeos did a painted mural on the external wall of the room, during the pieceโs assembly.
Identical twins, the majority of the works of the 2 brothers is realised without prior planning. โNormally we donโt arrange or plan, we just get on with it. We always just get designing on paper and then, notepaper in hand, we pass it straight onto a canvass or a wall.โ Amongst the poetry of the duoโs images, is the simple routine, the love, the journeys, fishing trips with grandad, the relationships, escapism and contradictions โin search of new paths.โ โWe make social and political criticisms. In other situations we create a parallel, fantastic, playfully educational world for the power of survival.โ
A Fantastic Trajectory.
Gustavo and Otavio started painting in their parentsโ living room, then progressed to the streets of Sao Pauloโs Cambuci borough in the 1980s. Surprisingly quickly, the duo Os Gemeos arrived in galleries and museums of the USA and Europe. Years ago, before their talent was recognized by Brazilian specialists, they were discovered by Jeffrey Deitch, the curator of โToo far too close.โ It was Deitch who opened the doors for Os Gemeos, at the Deitch Gallery NYC, where theyโve been showing until August this year. It was the same curator (Deitch), who introduced them to the Fortes Villaca Gallery of Sao Paulo, where they exhibited in 2006.
But, their talent and fame has spread throughout the world, since 1994 Gustavo and Otavio have painted in Chile, Argentina, Cuba, USA, Australia, China and in almost the whole of Europe. On the agenda this year remains a preview and exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo (MOT) and participation, in December, in a group modern and contemporary show at Le Louvre, Paris. โFor 2009 we have various invitations, but weโve yet to confirm our plans for the year,โ concludes Gustavo.

OS Gemeos ๐ง๐ท Sรฃo Paulo Graffiti โข Brazil Street Art, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 15, 2008 4:40:02 GMT 1, thanks for the info hc. hc - give us an idea of how famous they are out there - on the tv every once in a while eh ?
I'm sorry I'm really not your man. I don't live in the most cosmopolitan of areas out here and I don't watch ANY TV. It just so happened I was walking through the living room and the missus, knowing my interests, commented about two Brazilian artists, brothers, who were makin' it big overseas and gonna be on the news after the break. I figured it would be Os Gemeos, so I hung around to see a very short mention of this show and followed it up with a Googlehunt! Sorry I can't be of more help. Ragnar (Blind Angle) would be a good member to ask. He is in Rio and certainly moving in more sophisticated circles than I do. Or you could try sending an email to Choque Cultural. for good info' about Brazilian street artists.
I had kinda hoped Ragnar or one of the other members with some perhaps better Portuguese skills might have volunteered to translate for you, but I felt like a bit of a clown being that I'd started the thread! ;D

OS Gemeos ๐ง๐ท Sรฃo Paulo Graffiti โข Brazil Street Art, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 15, 2008 20:33:34 GMT 1, I know it's available from the museum for R$80.00, which is about ยฃ22. I understand it has 150 pages, with very little text. However I'm unsure whether it's a hardback. I haven't seen anything of it, so can't pass comment at all.

OS Gemeos ๐ง๐ท Sรฃo Paulo Graffiti โข Brazil Street Art, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 15, 2008 23:39:43 GMT 1, Haha, cheers Dotdot. Funny about them not understanding the Babelfish translation, although I'm sure they still appreciated the effort. I guessed they would speak some English, having travelled a lot, Portuguese and Spanish only get you so far in Europe and Asia! Babelfish is ok for a word here or there though.
I'm surprised noone's commented yet on them being involved in a show at Le Louvre. Can't be many street artists whove ever exhibited there!?! I thought that would be kind of a big deal.
