OS Gemeos 🇧🇷 São Paulo Graffiti • Brazil Street Art, by adewilliams on Jan 29, 2014 18:34:19 GMT 1, how about banksy? Not at this price point but people were standing/sleeping/waiting for 24hours in the cold for the CYW release and an image wasn't released till the line was already formed. Because a majority of people knew they could sell it on for 10x more down the line. CYW was hanging in Marks & Stencils for about a month before the release if I remember right

I am just saying that a very large percentage of people bought this print in the hope that it will be an investment and NOT for what it looked like. This will be my last chime on this then I will waddle off into the sunset. And I'm not arguing with anyone it's just really hard to know why people do things. You are leaving out people who bought the print because they are die hard fans. Not for investment or the perfect image but because they love OS and wanted their only litho. <communication disconnected>

Every person who bought this image saw it before they did. I'm sure some who thought they wanted to didn't if they didn't like the image. You don't get that kind of respect in the market unless you have done a sh*t load of hard work. It's not like we are talking about Brainwash here. Just my 2c. It is called marketing, true, but the question is rather whether this is the correct way to do it (especially in light of the fact that it costs 4k). Posting a blurry picture a week before the release and then showing the image in full a day ahead of the release is also M A R K E T I N G and also generates buzz... and in my opinion a better way to do it. Give people a chance to think before they buy. I'm sure this method also put some people off, in fact making this an example of bad marketing. People now had to spend 4k in 10 min, something quite a few arent comfortable doing. If they had a day to think about it, they may have decided otherwise. Maybe, and there would probably be far more unhappy campers here (and elsewhere)!!

Highly saught after print drops, aka investments to most on this board, really bring out the worst in humanity. The majority of the comments in this thread and ones similar to it, really shine a light on how little is known about art and the artists creating it.
I propose the name of this forum be change to "Urban Investment Association" to better reflect the accuracy of the content contained within, because clearly it's not all about the "art".

OS Gemeos 🇧🇷 São Paulo Graffiti • Brazil Street Art, by eschiff on Jan 29, 2014 18:40:30 GMT 1, I've seen so many people say this and it's just a bad argument. I would hope those buying weren't using bill and debt money. I certainly wasn't. If you have a lot of bills and debts you can't pay i can understand why you'd be bitter about this release. No not bitter, just think its pathetic but each to there own i suppose. I think i would rather invest 4k on a banksy who in the future will still be worth money exactly! For you it's about the money, for me it was having a piece by the twins.

OS Gemeos 🇧🇷 São Paulo Graffiti • Brazil Street Art, by Deleted on Jan 29, 2014 18:47:11 GMT 1, Why put out blurred pictures and links to instagram when you could of just posted a picture when the original details were released? It's called C Y N I C A L M A R K E T I N G
How often does anyone here buy something for thousands of pounds without knowing what it looks like it what the price is?
It created panic buying and confusion. From a marketing point of view it was a master stroke, from an ethical point of view it was pretty underhand. Nobody was forced to buy one but many people who really wanted one would have felt like they had about 1 second after seeing the price and image to make up their mind. I had one in the cart and decided not to go ahead as common sense kicked in and I realised that I was about to pay €4000 for a print that had no hand finishing and is identical to the one another 98 people in the world own!

OS Gemeos 🇧🇷 São Paulo Graffiti • Brazil Street Art, by kbfrombk on Jan 29, 2014 18:48:46 GMT 1, I always find it funny that street art, art that was "born on the streets." Democratic art, often anti-consumerist and made for "everyone" is actually just a scene filled with hundreds of thousands of rabid fans literally obsessed with owning limited editions for their interior walls. Whose lives somehow seem incomplete without a signed print they can own and consume and covet and flip for something better next year. Fans who continually defend the high prices demanded for these street art prints, whose editions generally trade at higher premiums than their contemporary artist counterparts. Don't blame 99 prints or os gemeos for manufacturing hype. They don't need to do that because all of you people have done it for them. It's the 10,000 posts on the Banksy forum and other forums that is the hype. It's all so ironic. This guy probably makes his own shoes.

OS Gemeos 🇧🇷 São Paulo Graffiti • Brazil Street Art, by Feral Things on Jan 29, 2014 18:56:08 GMT 1, I’ve gotta say, I really love the image. One of the things I like about Os Gemeos is that they depict ordinary people with their own personalities and style and without resorting to any lazy ‘everyman’ stereotype. There’s lots of ‘urban art’ featuring lingerie-clad girls and chisel-jawed guys but those pieces really don’t do anything for me. I think the print is perfectly balanced and composed too and I love the vibrant colours against the drab background; an absolute beauty.

It's the 10,000 posts on the Banksy forum and other forums that is the hype. It's all so ironic. Its not a democratic art at all it never has been, its an artform where artists do what they want on the streets without asking for permission I dont see the democracy in that at all. I can see graffiti and street art being more socialist than democratic due to the non-consumerist aspect of street work as you stated. You are are correct the fans do have an effect on the art in a negative way at times and collecting art has turned into whole genre of its own within street art. Its a biproduct of our societies and people wanting a part of something that is given freely in most cases. The difference between the twins and alot of other artists this forum caters to is that Os Gemeos are authentic representations of the real power of the artform, and most of the other hyped artists are products of the market and their work exists only because forums like this exist. You dont see those artists painting around the world still for free, giving donating shows to small galleries that helped them along the way. You see edition after edition from the same artists, and this feeds the craze you talk about. Yet when a true representative of our culture like the twins makes something available to the fans of course the frenzy will consume it as it does much lesser artists. To me judging them based on this print release alone is unfair, and the defending the value atleast in my case is trying to help people get past all the bullshit that is being posted on here. I didnt buy one i wasn't lucky enough to and I wont buy one on the secondary market, I am ok with that. Os Gemeos has 200K instagram followers not because they sell prints and art but because they have touched a huge demographic, painted cities for the past 2 decades and imprinted themselves on the world. You dont think that 99 of those 200K fans can afford a 4K print? I dont see the problem with any hype that comes there way, only because they arent attention whores that feed off this hype and need to always be in the spotlight. They have found a balance in there work street/gallery and it works for them. I am sure someone mentioned making a print at a studio Picasso printed at and it sounded intriguing. One of the major reasons I coveted this print was because this print making process is also artistic in nature and each print is an extension of their art not just a reproduction.
The guy that keeps bring up Koons is clueless I wont restate what I have stated about OG vs contemporary counterparts, I will say that there is no comparison to this print and a Archival Giclee photograph even if a smaller edition from the worlds highest paid artist. You are basically paying for his signature IMO and there is no soul in that image, OG hands are all over this print and there mark has been left on it in more way that just a reproduction. Secondly we wouldn't even be having this conversation if the price was printed at 1k because all friends and family would have all gotten them because they could afford it. 4k was a lot of money for anyone and not only did it take out some of the speculation it also took out the homey discount aspect of a print run that can happen.
I am still taken back by some of these posts, I just have to shake my head.

Sure there will be some flipped, if it was priced at 20k that would be the case...but for most of us, owning a piece of the twins artwork is pretty special and something we've been searching for for a long time.
drugfree my order says 'preparation in progress'

Secondly we wouldn't even be having this conversation if the price was printed at 1k because all friends and family would have all gotten them because they could afford it. 4k was a lot of money for anyone and not only did it take out some of the speculation it also took out the homey discount aspect of a print run that can happen. I am still taken back by some of these posts, I just have to shake my head. I Will Say That there is no comparison to this print and another print from the twins; Because they do not have made others in the past; they have made only a print. price 4k.. It reminds me, even if from afar, the situation of Aryz. Aryz is a super talented artist, as long as people could not find his prints around, everyone wanted one. Now that he has produced a couple of prints in the last few months his print has remained unsold at "Studio Cromie" . We will see what will happen with the next release of the twins which are also very close to Aryz... For now there is nothing to say. Enjoy your print. I'm tired of this thread. Peace and Love
I always find it funny that street art, art that was "born on the streets." Democratic art, often anti-consumerist and made for "everyone" is actually just a scene filled with hundreds of thousands of rabid fans literally obsessed with owning limited editions for their interior walls. To me judging them based on this print release alone is unfair, and the defending the value atleast in my case is trying to help people get past all the bulls**t that is being posted on here. OS Gemeos 🇧🇷 São Paulo Graffiti • Brazil Street Art, by yoyosh on Jan 29, 2014 20:21:16 GMT 1, In the aftermath of this week's Gemeos release, why would any popular urban artist continue to price their releases anything less than 4 figures? Feels like a real tipping point to me. Anyone else?

Otherwise its a pointless conversation.
