The reason why this art scene has such a following is because the artists work is reachable. Ok only in print form for most,but still accessible. I beleive dolk is a good example of how selling reasonably priced work can work in their favour. he is twice as famous as os gemeos and rightly so due to the fact of people can afford his work. I have no interest in os gemeos. The greed they have shown to borderline hilarious. I dont care if they dont release alot. But I bet they will now.
Am I the only one out there who feels a little bit closer to the artists when I open the tube and roll out the print for the first time?

Democratic art, often anti-consumerist and made for "everyone" is actually just a scene filled with hundreds of thousands of rabid fans literally obsessed with owning limited editions for their interior walls. Whose lives somehow seem incomplete without a signed print they can own and consume and covet and flip for something better next year. Fans who continually defend the high prices demanded for these street art prints, whose editions generally trade at higher premiums than their contemporary artist counterparts. Don't blame 99 prints or os gemeos for manufacturing hype. They don't need to do that because all of you people have done it for them. It's the 10,000 posts on the Banksy forum and other forums that is the hype. It's all so ironic. Gotta agree with you cornholio. This thread to me says much more about consumerism than it does about art. The "Urban Investment Association", as Klow puts it, the " Urban Art Shopping Mall" that I can't get past seeing it as anymore just can't get enough of these threads. Brainwash anyone? It's not the twins fault and I do love their street work. Hopefully this release will just give them more money to go and do more good in the world.

As a big collector of his I like to think that everyone that's into street art would know who he is, but unless you're on this forum you probably don't know him. But that said the last year has been amazing for his career and he has gotten his name much more out there. It certainly helped that BBC had one of his pieces as their photo of the day. The twins on the other hand has been around for ages and they are in both the contemporary and street art world. For now the contemporary part is so much bigger so I think it's pretty safe to assume that they are know by a lot more people than Dolk, just being realistic. |

Dolk is more widely known than Os Gemeos i agree.
People that don't follow art know Dolk and some of his images and get it... mainly people in art/collect know of os gemeos .
I have shown both to loads of friends and 100% of them can appreciated dolks work(even if it was 1 image).. whereas not 1 single person has said wow those yellow people are great i need that, also there wasn't any variation of work to show from os gemeos....
I like both artist and in the art world os gemeos are much bigger than dolk.... but the world is bigger than this little art bubble we live in.

I could be happy just for Banksy; If tomorrow Banksy sells 99 prints at £10,000 each, I will be more than happy; but only because he has in the past sold prints at £200 which now sell for £10,000. Because he sold 2000 "Tesco posters" at £5 each to raise funds in support of rioters who smashed up a Tesco store, ec. The Twins and JR have only launched an amount in the crowd and saw there were 99 chickens willing to be plucked without even seeing the image. If they had sold their first print at $ 30, today the value of this would be the same k4500; but their have preferred plucking the poultry. i have taken my opinion from years of following both artists and constantly getting opinions from friends who do not give a toss about art or the art world. Just genuine opinions on the images. so not just now showing couple of pics and taken my opinion from that.
go and stand on a street anywhere in the world except from Brazil and get public opinion. please correct me if i am wrong, but deliberately changing what wrote is plain stupid.
I would love a piece by os gemeos but i collect art so my opinion is biased as i subject myself to all the marketing and hype ect,
i won't add anymore to this discussion as its just people who bought the print defending os gemeos blindly. as i said before the world is bigger than this forum and art bubbles and sometimes it good to step out of it and take stock of what is actually going on.

However, 99prints are telling me the payment didn't go through, when my credit card company confirm it did - so it would probably be wise to initiate a charge back claim, as they think they have nothing to refund.

Allegedly this happened to 100's of people and hence the delay replying. From most prints being around £70-£150; then a few years ago we started seeing £350-£550; I remember being shocked when Banksy's Applause was £600; then JR, Kaws, etc going for around £1000. Faile doing the same only in more limited runs, and 1/1 for even more!
Then Kaws recently doing a 10 print portfolio for $25K, now Os Gemeos doing a single print for €4000.
It's a steady rise, and limits being constantly pushed... and these artists are selling at Bonhams and Philips, alongside Haring and Warhol!
You can certainly see that prices in the scene have been rising over the last 10 years.

I don't think it's a case of those who bought are defending them blindly. I think it's a case of those who bought did so confidently because they're educated enough to know Os Gemeos' place and they're trying to educate those who obviously don't. No-one is saying the price was cheap but it was naive to think it would ever be much less. Os Gemeos detest flippers and the UK especially for it. It was correctly priced to market based on an edition of 99. It was never going to be a larger edition because 99prints.net is all about lithograph editions of 99. JR persuaded them to come over and 99prints.net is JR's project hence why it was released through them. If they do decide to release another print in the future, it is going to be another edition of 99 at the same price or even more depending on the secondary market value of this (their first) print, unless they part with 99prints.net and release a larger edition, which I doubt.

I would not do too much reference to fans on Facebook because most of the Os G. FB' fans are Brazilians and Brazil is a huge, huge country (look at the language in wich people write on their page).
If you google the word "Dolk" you have circa 497.000 entries
With "Space Invader Art" 2.950.000 entries
With "Os Gemeos art", the result is 1.080.000
With "Dondi Art" 1.320.000 entries
With "Shepard Fairey art" 5.130.000;
With "Obey art" 36.500.000 (but there is also the clothing)
With "Banksy art" 19.700.000 (do not compare Os Gemeos to Banksy please!!!)
Dolk is certainly not important as Os Gemeos in the big numbers, but some of his works, like Chè or Grenade Lovers, are more iconic than much others Os G. images in the pop culture.
