Phlegm The Bestiary at Howard Griffin Gallery, by eschiff on Feb 3, 2014 15:36:07 GMT 1, @jaytown sorry i missed you mate, i was there saturday as well.
I must say, that this was a really nice exhibition, where it's located off of shoreditch high street it feels like you're stepping into another world going through the doors. As others have said the use of material to make the figures (apologies if someone has said what is is...i just guess cardboard) pop off the walls was something you don't get from the street and I thought it was a great way to take advantage of the gallery space, setting it apart from his street work.
Well worth a wonder in

Phlegm The Bestiary at Howard Griffin Gallery, by Carrie on Feb 3, 2014 16:32:34 GMT 1, I've always liked Phlegm's works and especially his outdoor pieces, however this tome 6 months ago I thought he would grind to a halt - I couldn't see where his style would move on to, I couldn't see how he would adapt - I am SO HAPPY he changed my opinion with this show, the 3d pieces look stunning, and he has somehow pushed the bar up again by making his works look even better than they already did! Keep up the good work Phlegm!

I agree that this show is a major step forward for Phlegm.
Though, I have to disagree with the rest of your opinion.
I think Phlegm took some significant sets forward the last 8 months. The pieces he did in Albany, Sheepsbay, Norway and Belgium were game changers IMHO.
Albany brought out new themes with the mass exodus of animals running from the fire. He also incorporated a layer of shadow figured that is a new layer to his work that I have only seen one other time. I think it's a very cool dimension.
Sheepsbay was an uncharacteristic commentary on the state of our society with smart phones and isolation. Phlegms characters always stay within their made up worlds. That piece was a clear statement about the real world.
The mountain troll in norway was one of the first pieces to be done in a larger scale yet included the detailed study of the mountain range on the creatures back. It's essentially the first time we've seen a magnified detail painting within a large mural. Epic!!
The creation myth creatures of Belgium were the 2nd installment of the detailed studies on a larger canvas. This magnificent piece simultaneously sewed the creation myth story of Phlegms characters. He's starting to reveal the back story. I think it will come clearer with the release of his next book.
Personally, I thought last year was a solid leap forward for Phlegm. This year he has elevated the game yet again. Somehow I sense a beginning in this artists growth. He's got much more up his sleeve. Again, all IMHO

Phlegm The Bestiary at Howard Griffin Gallery, by aa on Feb 6, 2014 20:23:19 GMT 1, I ducked in to this show this afternoon, and had the whole place to myself. I'd never really 'got' Phlegm before, but think I do now. There are so many great little pieces that combine into a much bigger show, that the only way to appreciate it is to see it.
I can't believe that they're going to destroy it all when the shows done. There's a lot in there that I'd gladly pay for!
If you're anywhere near it, I'd definately check it out.

Phlegm The Bestiary at Howard Griffin Gallery, by doyle on Feb 6, 2014 22:48:35 GMT 1, glad i went to see this and really like the volume/3d effect as well. i have only ever seen his stuff on-line, so it's great to see it up close and appreciate his artistic skill and use of space in the gallery. Nice one Phlegm.

Phlegm The Bestiary at Howard Griffin Gallery, by Dibbs 45 on Feb 7, 2014 1:03:52 GMT 1, Went tonight. The show is stunning and worth a visit. Amazed tonight to see the man himself by a stroke of luck. What great fellow. Sincere unassuming and accommodating. Its was empty and there was time to really appreciate the work that he had done. Some amazing hard work went into this show.

Phlegm The Bestiary at Howard Griffin Gallery, by Jameszee on Feb 9, 2014 0:03:22 GMT 1, Finally managed to get over tonight, gutted I missed the chance to have a natter with phlegm like you did last night Dibbs 45 !!
John Dolan and George the dog were perhaps standing in for phlegm tonight (John was doing a sketch in the entrance.)
As others have already confirmed, this show is full of atmosphere and great art. The 3d aspect of some of the pieces takes his caricatures to the next level. Really enjoyed taking it all in and looking forward to seeing what else phlegm has in store for 2014! I will popping back again before show ends - a lot of love and hard work has gone into this show, make sure you don't miss it!
