Banksy.co.uk • Official Banksy Website , by randomname on Apr 15, 2014 20:48:50 GMT 1, A timed release would be nice. No one will get rich trying to flip a timed edition, but everyone who wants one could get one at a reasonable price. Release a few images and maybe the old prints will come down in price.Just put the edition size on the back so we don't have to see "6,839/14,743." I'm not sure if Banksy would do that.... Kinda bad for business i guess. I get the impression he's against the high secondary market prices. Seems like his solution was to not release any more prints. Which just made it worse.

Banksy products are all about the money right now, the latest print release showed that. I don't know how much control he has over prices anymore but rest assured if there's big money to be made he'll make it.
I don't blame him at all for making money but it does make the whole 'against the system' message he sometimes puts across in his pieces seem a little shallow now.

Not 100% but I think the "latest release" you referred to were gifts. Can't see a set of 16 prints to a select few as a "release" and he probably received nothing for them. Could be wrong.

I would like to think that if he sells an original piece he would get most of the money. He needs to eat too right? And LA is expensive I also like to think that he uses his money to organise things like Exit through the gift shop and BOTI. I also appreciate that he still does some street pieces. That's how we can all enjoy his work (for as long as it lasts).

Absolutely. Like I say, I have nothing against him making a good living out of his art and if people are prepared to pay for it then good luck to him and I would do exactly the same in his position.
I suppose for me it's all a bit champagne socialist but that's just my opinion and people may disagree.

Ah... well as you said he's not a charity and let's not forget the contribution of his 30 day NY run. Just his HW for Dicaprio's Charity , Banality of Evil and The Love Hurts piece for Haitian Relief raised quite a chunk. He does give quite a bit IMO.

Banksy.co.uk • Official Banksy Website , by Poster Bob on Apr 15, 2014 22:39:58 GMT 1, It'll probably turn out to be the t-shirt that he designed. Then said he didn't design to see how many people only cared about the shirt and not the charity. Which would be the most ill-conceived prank in the history of pranks. i think that would be a pretty dumb move, if true. people didn't ask for a refund because they didn't want to give to charity... they asked for a refund because it seemed like BNE was untrustworthy. (in my opinion - it still does - don't think he ever disclosed how many shirts he sold/how much profit he made) I can't see this as Banksy's style. He could have done it, sure, but if he did it would have been revealed about 24 hours after the initial denial so that no disrepute would have been dealt to the charity or to BNE and it would have been widely reported on. Did you see this in the news anywhere besides street art websites? Do you think Banksy pulls a stunt and the world doesn't notice? It just doesn't add up.

Why remind everyone what the shirt isn't weeks later?

Not that he cares as the guy is completely loaded anyway Not weird at all. By releasing an expensive run of A/P only release banksy has total control over any resale. If you saw a print by banksy with a/p you would want pest control, if there are 16 in total, he can decide if he wants them authenticated for resale or not.
He is in complete control, he is not the next big thing, he is a contemporary without peer who IS street art to the masses, his legacy is assured and his market is controlled. Banksy will end up a better investment (you used next big thing so I have to mention money) than the chapmans, em ins, creeds, opie's etc etc as he has created a niche in their market that is far broader, more popular and embracing of the zeitgeist of modern art as something everyone can share than they could ever hope to achieve, yet all of them want that mantle as critics do not rate their work. Critics don't rate banksy, the public by and large do and that's why he is no next big thing. Label him after Hogarth in a couple of hundred years, or not.
