Banksy.co.uk โข Official Banksy Website , by Deleted on Oct 28, 2018 10:27:32 GMT 1, Most artists like their work "exhibited" for the publicity...... So I have never heard of an artist not agreeing with an exhibit... can anyone name another one who doesn't? However they are usually involved? right? in curation etc?? All this is rather curious IMO. Cheers I agree. Despite all the posts on the subject, I still don't quite understand why Banksy hates 'unofficial' exhibitions of his work. If I was a famous and rich artist, and someone in Russia decide to put on a show of my work without my consent, I wouldn't care in the slightest. It means people in Russia would get to see my work which otherwise they would never get to see. Why should I object to that? It seems almost churlish and mean to object.

Wow.... just saw the Amsterdam exhibition (it's still on) and assumed it was with the artists consent. The art on show was outstanding. But now I feel conned by the gallery. Shameful (if true) W.

all he has done is say they are not his shows
So if people are unaware, and they see on the site then they will know
I don't see where its a performance?
It's just stating things as they are
is it not?

The outrage - the disavowing it. The oh don't support these people. It's a performance.
If it really upset him he'd put a stop to it.
Actually it's a quite nice piece of performance art. It's when his fans think it's true outrage and go bonkers on these places like twitteresque outrage.

Yes. It's the 'fans' that misconstrue it. I mentioned that above. The performance by banksy is quite good. It's the fans and the Twitter style outrage that piles onto it that makes the whole thing bizarre to me.

For the galleries that heโs listed, not many, Iโd agree. However, when Banksy puts on a show, there tends to be some surprises. Itโs not just work hung on a wall. And I suppose thatโs was my point, when answering the question posed by someone else as to what I think he meant by โtreat them accordingly โ.

Banksy.co.uk โข Official Banksy Website , by lee3 on Oct 28, 2018 19:14:17 GMT 1, Most artists like their work "exhibited" for the publicity...... So I have never heard of an artist not agreeing with an exhibit... can anyone name another one who doesn't? However they are usually involved? right? in curation etc?? All this is rather curious IMO. Cheers I agree with you that most artists like their work exhibited, no question. But this reality is so extreme/atypical that it boggles the mind. I believe all 9 of the "fake" exhibitions on his site have taken place over the past year alone, certainly the past 2. Contrast that with the fact that his 9 authentic shows listed have taken place over the span of 15 years. He's said as much as he's going to say so I'm speculating at this point as an avid admirer for most of those years. He appears to me to be a less is more artist and a perfectionist with his best work free for all.
So the fact that you have a couple handfuls of shows hosted by others for profit conflicts with the very ethos of this artist. Most artists are not working in a context where 5 or 10 shows are open concurrently without permission. Most curators work in concert with a living artist and if that artist said no thank you, that would be the end of the discussion. In one case (mocco) you have a institution charging entry and leveraging receipts to purchase work on secondary to improve their collection and therefore garner more attention over time. I can't think of another situation where an institution behaved similarly with a living artist objecting. There is nothing he can do to remedy the situation apart from pointing out that these things are unsanctioned. It's going to continue regardlessly and some of these are so poorly curated that they are hanging photos of work and charging entry. All of these shows are dilutive and sterile by comparison to the genuine shows he unveils on his own and they're charging a premium for entry.

People making money off an image they have no rights to - even huge companies like Primark do it, yet if you copy their product they want to threaten and sue you

It appears banksy doesn't care about the rights. So if that's the case what's the problem?
Its not just shows, there are a huge amount of companies selling cheap banksy canvas prints, banksy art on mugs, banksy posters, someone even made a door curtain of a shredded GWRB recently... a lot of it never had the rights to sell. People making money off an image they have no rights to - even huge companies like Primark do it, yet if you copy their product they want to threaten and sue you It appears banksy doesn't care about the rights. So if that's the case what's the problem?
