Would certainly be a lot of trainingโฆ earliest I could do it now would be next summer but more likely the summer after - got quite proficient at swimming whilst training for my Ironman races and ended up being half decent with or without wetsuit. But that's only 2.5 miles, not 30 miles (the distance you swim due to currents)! And definitely no wetsuit.
Channel swimming is one of the last great feats of human endurance that is still much the same as it was when Captain Webb swam across. It's a bloody tough day at the office. Three times as many people have summited Everest as have swum the Channel and, over the 150 years people have been doing it, the failure rate is 70%. But that's what challenges and bucket lists are about, right?
Does this feel like I'm talking myself into it?

To swim the channel and be recognised by the Channel Swimming Association you need to hire a pilot who - in his own boat - (not surprisingly) pilots you across the busy shipping lanes. (This pilot costs a few grand) The idea is that the pilot knows both the lanes and the best time to set off for tides/weather/currents. Most swimmers end up swimming in a 'S' shape due to the tides.
Apparently there's a point at Cap de gris-nez that you HAVE to make, otherwise you miss the shore, the land drops away, the tides take you out again and down the coast and you have several hours more to swim (which, after around 13 hours or so isn't such a palatable or achievable prospect as your body is already shutting down). People have been 100 metres from shore, missed it and failed to make the crossing.

Take the bus from Khon Kaen in Thailand to Vientienne in Laos: not comfortable but the scenery is to die for.

I just remembered an experience I thought I would share on this thread.
Whilst at Glastonbury 1998 I watched an England game during the World cup stood next to Hawking. It was pissing with rain and we were knee deep in mud.
Great to see him getting involved.
Having seen a headline online "Stephen Hawking unveils formulae that can help England win the world cup".
