New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Peter Bengtsen on Jul 10, 2014 18:03:28 GMT 1, Hello all,
My name is Peter. Some of you already know me as I have been on this and other forums (e.g. the Old eBay Forum, Wallkandy and the Faile forum) since their inception, discussing street art and urban art. Like many other members, until now I have done so under an alias rather than my real name.
Apart from being a street art enthusiast, I am also an art historian and sociologist, and I have been doing research on street art for about 8 years now. Since 2010 I have been working on a single research project which has in part involved the study of members' discussions about street art and urban art on this and other forums from 2006 to 2014.
The result is a book of 243 pages entitled The Street Art World. I have attached a short description of the book below.
For now I am distributing the book myself, having chosen to also self-publish it rather than going with an established publisher.
If you are interested in purchasing a copy, please go to streetartworld.bigcartel.com.
If you want more information about the book, feel free to contact me at the same address or post in this thread.
Thank you for reading.
In recent years, street art has become embedded in popular culture and received growing attention from the art market and art institutions. Work by street artists has entered galleries, auction houses and museums, and some artists have been given the opportunity to create large-scale sanctioned public art projects. Simultaneously, widespread photographic documentation of street artworks and the circulation of images online have provided artists with a potentially global audience.
Based on studies of everyday interaction among artists, gallerists, collectors, bloggers and street art enthusiasts, The Street Art World investigates the often contradictory attitudes within the street art community towards art history and the institutions of art. The book also deliberates on street artโs connection to the art market and public art. It considers street artโs potential to affect the viewerโs perception of public space, and the possible challenges the increasing digital mediation of street art may pose to bringing this potential to fruition.

New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Agent Provocateur on Jul 10, 2014 18:49:30 GMT 1, Looks like a labour of love, and an interesting read, although my tendancy to go for books with more pictures than words might mean it may take me some time to decipher... especially with phrases like 'empirical considerations' and 'a methodological travalogue'!
Joking apart, I'll definitely buy it when I get some spare rubbles, as I haven't read anything academic/serious on the subject of street art.

Yes, the first chapter is by necessity quite academic. It is important to note, however, that the book - while serious about its topic - has been very consciously written with a non-academic audience in mind.

New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Agent Provocateur on Jul 10, 2014 19:22:40 GMT 1, Excellent... glancing at the chapters it looks like there's some quality discussion, the two chapters titled 'The institutionalisation of street art' and 'Delineating street art from public art' caught my eye.
Out of interest, does the book mention any change in language when describing street art as it emerged from its underground roots into the mainstream? For example has the word 'mural' always been used to descibe street pieces... or has it insinuated itself in to the street art lexicon as the public/media gradually accepted it, albeit on their terms!?
Yep, not really sure what I'm talking about either... but worth a try!

Yes, there are discussions of terminology, for example about the increasing use of the term "urban art" since around the beginning of 2006 in connection with the Spank The Monkey show and the first "urban art auctions" at Bonhams.
The use of the term "mural" is not really something I discuss explicitly in the book, but I would say that its use in relation to street art has become more common in the period I have conducted my research. This is probably in part because there has also been a tendency for some street artists to create increasingly large (and often sanctioned) artworks which - at least in scale - resemble the works associated with muralism.

New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Gard on Jul 10, 2014 21:58:00 GMT 1, Chapter 3 is what I find interesting. Been thinking about that a lot lately. Especially when you cop are what they show at fairs like Art Basel and what we talk about here.

Chapter 5 is an epilogue of sorts. The question about "the death of street art" is one that has surfaced many times and will probably continue to do so as the idea of what street art is keeps changing.

I am currently working on a book chapter which will be further addressing some of the issues discussed in Chapter 3. The text is for an anthology on graffiti and street art which is planned to come out sometime in 2015.
