Preserving your art, by Deleted on Jul 25, 2014 23:05:05 GMT 1, Definitely go out and grab a flat file/ portfolio. I picked up one that holds up to a 40x60 print. I think I bought it for 60-70$? Aside from that, grab two large pieces of acid free foam board and buy some acid free sleeves. Anything you don't frame, flatten out for a day or two, put it in a sleeve, place between the two foam boards, tape them shut and flat, and put it in the flat file. You'll understand how much of a pain in the ass it is to flatten a print out if you ever go to get it floated and have had it in the tube for months. Got it; any chance you can point me to where you can score a flat file like that for that price? Also even if the flattening is a pain in the ass, it isn't irreversible damage right? ASW has some nice ones: www.aswexpress.com/wholesale/storage-and-presentation/portfolios-and-presentation-cases/stein-design-picturesque-presentation-cases/cases.html

Preserving your art, by Deleted on Jul 25, 2014 23:16:14 GMT 1, ... leave it fresh hanging by itself ... put it in a tray frame ... or my fave: I like a bit of perspex box different styles depending on the piece ... floated or plain box ... perspex will protect and block out c90%+ of UV light (you can get special UV coatings for higher) Hopefully I am not hijacking the thread with this question…. I recently got a RAE original (my first original), and it is 30 x 30 inches, and 2 inches deep. Would you recommend putting it in a perspex box or just hang it out of direct sunlight? I wouldn't put it in a tray frame as it has got great sides and I'd want to see those. If I went with a perspex box, is that something a framer could do? (I guess I should ask my framer, but am interested in your perspex box experiences). Thanks personally, I'd hang it without any framing or box... just keep it out of direct sunlight

Preserving your art, by South Bound on Jul 26, 2014 16:27:30 GMT 1, New question.
I've recently found some wood carvings (flat) that are carved to look like farm animals and painted with watercolor (this is an assumption only) These were my father's when he was a child and have since accumulated 70 years worth of dirt and dust. I want to clean them up to really make the colors pop. Is there a prefered method for cleaning watercolor on wood?

Preserving your art, by Dr Plip on Jul 26, 2014 16:57:26 GMT 1, A local framer once mounted some guy's original Snow White poster onto board. Like proper spray-mounted it, without running it past the guy. He did it to get it flat, apparently. I know people linen back old movie posters, but I don't think they like to be glued to cardboard like that.
We later found out that he'd been spray mounting people's movie posters for some time (not unlike a couple of the horror stories we've heard on here recently). Anyway, obviously the guy was upset by this and took his poster back, but I have no idea what he said or threatened the framer with. Later that same day, my (ever helpful) ex boss suggested that the guy might be able to remove it from the backing board if he used some soapy water.
The next day, the guy comes into our shop and explained to us how he'd taken my boss's advice and left the whole thing to soak in soapy water overnight. Weighted it down and everything. Come the morning, he was quite mortified to discover his original Snow White poster had become some expensive papier mache.
Well didn't I almost wet myself. I couldn't breathe for like 5 minutes. It was like the perfect storm of stupid.
God I miss that place.
