Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by natstan on Nov 2, 2014 16:48:48 GMT 1, And you call yourself Graffiti prints? Might be an idea to go way back and learn about the values many in this culture hold. One of the important ones beingโฆquestion everything and believe nothing!! To suggest anything other than praise is hate/spit/bitter jam? whatever is just plain stoopid The forum was built on flipping(when it started you could turn a profit on maybe 90% of artists), so it's far from another crux in its evolution. It's changed a fair bit since expresso beans culture crossed over onto this board, some older members embraced this with open arms as it injected some more means to make a profit during much leaner timesโฆ. The paying advertiser telling members to shut upโฆI've not been around nowhere near as long as a lot of members. But you telling members to shut up is a genuine crux in it's evolution. But I'm not telling anyone to shut up I keep my word simple so there not twisted or built on but they always are
Actually there was no spite on this thread at all. At least not me.
Read the other thread on Eelus where someone is calling him a douchebag. That is spiteful.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by curiousgeorge on Nov 2, 2014 17:14:24 GMT 1, Ohh and for the record when Banksy uses images he generally changes them and actually says SOMETHING with them!!(The FLAGS print in the raffle being a perfect example) Anyone that says he does like for like as per Whatson..well I'm not sure where they have been looking over the last decade, if they think Banksy using images and adds faux tags to as per this thread.
Whatson has had a goldmine of constructive feedback on here over the years.Generally dismissed as hate.Great skills with stencil and can, hope he finds his own voice one day

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Hairbland on Nov 2, 2014 17:18:35 GMT 1, While I love your incredibly detailed work, and own a couple prints youve made, AND plan on buying more, I feel telling people to be quiet (Ignoring him) about something that has gone directly into your pocket is in bad taste. It would appear "Ignoring ย him" and not speaking about this would keep it off the SEO, and maybe others wont find out about a plagiaristic action snd keep buying from him, and you. And this is coming from someone thats definitely not a flipper.ย Ripping off other artists for print profits is a NO. Taking a photograph, and turning it into fine art (Which all this time I assumed thats what it had been) holds a different light to the subject than live tracing an oil painting and calling it yours. Most artists reference material, yes. But, how it gets from the source to the canvas is what separates the men from the boys. That original painting has far more artistic merit than the whatson "version", and its really unfortunate that he made that decision. I like whatson, especially the zebra. I wish he didnt do that, but he did. Now he should deal with it the same way others artists in his shoes have.ย Agreed wholeheartedly... Graffiti Prints, this is a DISCUSSION board... Emphasis on discussion. ย We discss art, and reference material is fair game. ย I have a great respect for the prints you produce. ย However coming in here as you have done several times, in an effort to stimy negative speech about one of the images you produce is counterproductive. ย All you are doing is creating negative feelings towards your operation.ย
I agree it is a discussion board, and the arts whether it be a band you like, a movie you like, or a painting/artist you like are all up for discussion as one's taste is subjective. Thus the discussions about any artist - some like Kaws, or Faile, or Dolk, or Fairey, or Invader, or Whatson...some don't.
But lively discussion with informed opinions is a must and those objecting should march along with the other sheeple.
More important creators than Mr. Whatson have been called into question over perceived plagiarism.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Deleted on Nov 2, 2014 23:51:06 GMT 1, Well Whatson is certainly prolific and churns out screenies for the flipping and collecting market to the trendies.
So it could be that he just scales up stock images he finds and make stencils from photos.
His ballerina print is nice as he has combined a ballerina with what looks like a Mexican hat.

But then again, this scene stole people images before you could even get 50P for a whatson canvas, it was almost built on google images and magazine cut outs, so doesnt that make it part of the scene?
How Whatson turns pretty women into downsyndrome cavemen is past me though.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Deleted on Nov 5, 2014 11:45:26 GMT 1, Normally when permission is asked a credit is given to the source out of courtesy.
It's a shame if an artist takes ages to draw or paint a picture and then someone else just takes a photo of the painting makes a stencil of it and splashes some paint on it to get away with the copyright laws.

Copy right still applies
Mentioned earlier a lot copy work of others but aren't pursued by original artist for copyright infringement as they are struggling artists , sums involved aren't worth much but once popular and commercial gain , it's a different story

Brainwash got done in USA for his Sid Vicious plagiarism.
The judge said he didn't change it enough and should have chucked more paint on it.
France has bizzare laws and the artists rights society protects intellectual rights of dead artists too, which to me is bollocks.
I understand one artist being inspired by another artist and making their own version.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by zem on Nov 5, 2014 17:09:52 GMT 1, Interesting discussion...
I made art with packing tape (www.zemtape.com), not so far from stencil technique.
I'm used to use my own pictures or sometimes pictures (photography) I found on the net to start creating pieces. Especially when I have an idea and I look for a specific emotion/gesture/object, I'm impatient and can't wait to make my own picture to work on. I then make a lot of drafts/correction from the picture and often, the result is completely different from the initial picture. I think its part of the game with stencils and not condamnable at all..
But where I'm shocked in this discussion, is the fact to use other artist's painting/drawing to make its own piece, especially a print...that's bad and complete irrespect for me..
Even for photography, I try to use non-artistic pictures (I like these commercial/marketing/unpersonal pictures from databases) and when I can, I try to contact the photograph.
What is funny and annoying - as everyone think you are the copist -, it's that sometimes you see an artist who use, one year after, the same picture you used in your piece..but he have clearly more audience and success.. It was my case with JPS an its 2013 Girls with baloons : I did my swinging girl in 2012..it was from a (bad) movie called Possession from 2011..

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by johnnyh on Nov 5, 2014 18:13:14 GMT 1, I suppose the anwser to all this is.....if it was your original piece how would you feel.
Similarly if some one uses these or a print as the majority of a piece of work and sells it under their name how would the artist feel.
Although considering WCP advertise on here with plenty of support it almost seems the last place to warrant a discussion on an artist using a photo to make a stencil from when blatant copies are being promoted on the forum and bought by members

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by samfrost on Nov 6, 2014 2:08:41 GMT 1, I think that the fact there is so much discussion about MW and the derivative nature of his works hammers home the point that without adapting or progressing, this guy may have peaked.
The art world is littered with boom and bust artists...try looking at any day sale catalog at one of the major auction houses on the contemporary market from say 10, 15, 20 years ago (trust me it's a fun study and reality check). Littered with "hot" artists whom you would be lucky to unload at cost. The same applies here to the low end print and multiples market. Caveat emptor!
If I see another heart, rainbow, play on corporate image or butterfly, I am going to lose it!

Sorry fella your missing the point. The original in this case is the piece of work he created the stencil from..... How does that artist/photographer feel about this use and manipulation of their work. Just as if I took one of Martin's pieces and manipulated it a bit how would he feel if I was selling that image as my work. This is not so much about Martin but more about the use of others peoples images or works without permission. The degree also of difference from the original work eg how much manipulation is required before the stencil is classed as creating an original work.

Agree - I was thinking Martin must spend his day looking at images and thinking "would that look good in washed out black, white and grey with tags somewhere?"
Add dripping paint, attractive model-type woman with something done to her image, spraypaint can with or without nozzle, grenade, super hero imagery...but then there was already a thread re these evergreens.

Littered with "hot" artists whom you would be lucky to unload at cost. The same applies here to the low end print and multiples market. Caveat emptor! If I see another heart, rainbow, play on corporate image or butterfly, I am going to lose it! Agree - I was thinking Martin must spend his day looking at images and thinking "would that look good in washed out black, white and grey with tags somewhere?" Add dripping paint, attractive model-type woman with something done to her image, spraypaint can with or without nozzle, grenade, super hero imagery...but then there was already a thread re these evergreens.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by thomasmer on Nov 6, 2014 4:53:13 GMT 1, Martin like so few of the 'boom and bust artists' as you like to so horriby call them, thats so fucking vomit worthy in this genre, has always been painting since way before the money turned up and will carry on even if the money dries up which in itself is something I like in an artist and look for.
Personally I don't like Martins work one bit, and wouldn't hang it on my walls to save my life, but some like it, in fact a shit ton of people do like it, few drips, some half baked tags, for them its right nice.
Everyones a fucking critic though, wonder if Rushmore will be going along to this show or be a terrible coward keyboard critic.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by johnnyh on Nov 6, 2014 5:58:51 GMT 1, Got to agree with Thomasmer there as a lot of people forget he started out on here and was just doing his thing and as he says pretty sure he will carry on doing his thing.
He is also a very nice guy I used to be in touch with him quite reg on here. He did a lovely Eternal Reflection canvas for me.....it was very cheap and he donated half what zi gave him to charity.
He has always taken a fair bit of stick on here and although other than that Eternal Reflection Zi don't have anything else it is good to see him doing well. Not too easy to earn a living as an artist particularly when you have a young family and are starting your art career so good luck to him I say

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Deleted on Nov 6, 2014 7:02:44 GMT 1, Love Martin, love his work, love the fact that he is a genuine nice guy who will still take his time to answer questions or have a chat, love the fact that 80% of the people who complain about Martin 'borrowing' images for his pieces, also already have seen the Banksy documentary from a download/rip* . And i think we can all agree that the picture attached to this message is pretty darn awesome! Made by one of our favorite artist! P.S. I also love you all (and your comments!) P.P.S. Feel free to rip this comment.
*Just to be clear, i work in film and video and i have no problem with people ripping (my) movies or documentaries. I just think the more people rip my work means the more people have seen it. And i also understand ripping peoples work could also been seen as theft, but i get payed for my work and if someone steels it i get payed a little less.... But the more people will enjoy what i made and perhaps will look forward to my new production also....
