Import duty for books is zero rated and books are exempt from VAT - so no customs charges are applicable.

I always assumed they just rented a truck that was already tagged.

Only little criticism i can think of is that it is not a hard-back (yet?)

"Banksy in New York" Book, by Invaded 420 on Aug 25, 2014 10:18:06 GMT 1, Seemed like the writer got bored halfway through the book with both writing and the show. Little half assed near the end. Didnt really understand some parts for instance-
''just returned from shooting the assholes truck''
Nothing in the book we didnt already know. Good to have picture documentation though

"Banksy in New York" Book, by Carnage NYC on Sept 1, 2014 14:26:58 GMT 1, A few updates:
I did a little interview with Life + Times about the book. The only other recent interview I did was with a Chinese site and published only in Chinese, so it was nice to do something that people can ignore in a familiar language.
While the book is not sold out yet at this point I feel confident that it will, so I went ahead and made the donation to the ASPCA. If you are a friend of the animal kingdom please consider donating as well. Figure out how much you would spend on booze tonight if you had tomorrow off. Send them that amount.
I'm still a few days behind shipping orders, but the vast majority of orders have been filled. Thanks again!

"Banksy in New York" Book, by sharpster on Sept 1, 2014 20:25:02 GMT 1, Just received the two books I ordered, thank you! Looks nice at first sight. Just wondered why you charged 40 Dollars Shipping for two Books as there s clearly a receipt on top of the package that shipping was actually 25 Dollars. But feel free to donate the 15 Dollar Surplus for the good cause...just saying...

"Banksy in New York" Book, by fattyramone on Sept 1, 2014 21:28:52 GMT 1, Yeh $7 over actual shipping cost is a tad high , times that by the amount sold and it starts adding up....yes I know there's packaging to include but not $7 worth.....and certainly not $15 worth as in your case.
Never mind , c'la vie

Never mind , c'la vie I actually changed the store settings after the first few days to lower the shipping cost. The settings just aren't very granular and I had to cover packaging materials as well (which actually adds up quite a bit). If anyone wants a partial shipping refund email me at carnagenyc@gmail.com.

"Banksy in New York" Book, by Agent Provocateur on Sept 3, 2014 18:52:34 GMT 1, Just finished reading the book, which took about hour to get through, and... damn I was underwhelmed. I really try and steer clear of posting negative comments about stuff people have put hard work in to, so here's to breaking my golden rule. Apologies in advance Ray!
I think I may have been expecting too much, the book was promoted as "... the ultimate companion to Banksy's month-long project..." and "... a comprehensive look at the impact Banksy's work had on New York... ", which unfortunately built up my expectations.
I may have been expecting more in-depth analysis, conversations/interviews with some of the other people seen at the locations (including interesting and random photos/comments from social media). But definitely more about Better Out Than In's discussion on street art and its commercialisation (this was touched on, but only a few sentences), referencing where Banksy has come from and what bought him to a nothing for sale show across NY. What I mean is, I think the context the show was born from is as important a discussion point as the individual pieces.
I will concede that the book is a "... first-hand day-by-day account of the residency..." with some interesting and surreal anecdotes by the author. And there are some interesting discussion about the dogging/buffing/stealing of the pieces, with regards to local writers, wall owners and locals.
By FAR the most interesting section of the book (for me) was the analysis of the piece This Is My New York Accent (do you see what I did there with capitals and lower case... if you haven't read the book it'll seem like I've totally lost it now) by the author of Flip The Script Christian Acker. It was a fascinating couple of paragraphs that has made me want to buy his book now!
One of the points that was highlighted in the book that I hadn't come across before was the Robbo (RIP) angle, from my understanding the author seemed to think a lot of the later enhancements to Banksy's pieces stemmed from the Robbo vs Banksy beef. Apologies if I'm completely off track here, but is that true?
Anyways, simply put, after finishing reading it I was just left wanting more, much much more.
Now if someone made a book from the Better Out Than In thread on here, combined with an eclectic and diverse range of photos and comments from social media, that would be interesting.

"Banksy in New York" Book, by Carnage NYC on Sept 3, 2014 19:40:18 GMT 1, Thanks for your feedback, and sorry that the book didn't meet your expectations. The book was not meant to provide any sort of deep-diving academic analysis. I'm not really interested in that. It's a first person narrative and the goal was to make the daily hunt for Banksy pieces relatable for those who weren't there in person and hopefully to make you laugh once or twice. If you are looking for a curated selection of social media feedback I think you'll get something like it from the HBO documentary. I wanted to tell a more personal story. Definitely pick up Christian's book though, I highly recommend it!
(By the way, the hardcover edition will include a new preface by Jaime Rojo and Steve Harrington that provides more street-art historical context.)

I got totally the wrong end of the stick with the promotional blurb and thought it was going to be something it wasn't. Nay worries.
And for your information, being British my teeth are terrible... but I can get a tan
