Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by courier on Jul 31, 2015 17:36:05 GMT 1, I just thought that I would mention that I have recently seen an old plan chest for sale at the 'Emmaus' 2nd hand furniture store in Wallington (near Croydon). If anyone is visiting the Banksy exhibition at RISE gallery in Croydon, it is not too far away.
The item is not mine, it is just something I saw and thought might be useful to someone here. It is a fairly 'basic' chest, with metal frame and pine drawers. The drawers all have a gap (maybe half an inch or more) above them, so the chest is not 'sealed' when the drawers are closed.
The chest dimensions are: approx. 35.5 deep x 31ins wide x 28 ins high The price is ยฃ40.
It has been there for less than a week ie new 2nd-hand stock, but needs a bit of a clean up on the outside.
Directions if needed can be found be google searching for 'emmaus'. The Address is on Stafford Rd, Wallington. (From Croydon, once in Wallington, Look for a zebra crossing opposite a church. The driveway into Emmaus is next to a 'Euronics' store).
Sorry, no photo of the item.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by Aza on Sept 21, 2015 17:40:05 GMT 1, I'm thinking of getting a plan chest, but have a few queries.
Do you simply store prints on top of each other between sheets of glassine/tissue paper? If so I assume you flatten them first.
How many prints do you put into an average sized drawer?
Are they easy to access if you want to have a look through them?
Can you possibly post some photos of the drawers open, so I can take a peak?

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by European Bob on Sept 21, 2015 18:30:13 GMT 1, I was lucky enough to get a couple from a local school. A friend was working with the caretaker and they were throwing them out. They needed some sanding down and one had a coat of grey paint. I will get some pics. I store all my prints in them, I simply lay the prints on top of each over and place some foam board on top to keep them flat. One drawer is around 90x70x10cm so I can easily hold 20+ prints per drawer.
I would recommend visiting a local school especially in summer and having a chat with the caretaker. They are heavy so watch out for your back!

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by Zippy on Sept 25, 2015 14:11:14 GMT 1, Interesting thread. Also looking for an old leather chair for reading @coach
Would love a plans chest but not enough room to keep one. Has anyone used a low (3 or 4 drawer) one as a coffee table?
Or risky the kids spill something and it drips down / in the drawers?

The only space I have for one is as a coffee table. I'll get round to getting one at some point

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by Aza on Apr 15, 2016 18:08:38 GMT 1, I finally bought a plan chest I'm trying to find sheets of glassine paper of A1 size to place between prints, but I can only seem to find 50x70cm sheets. Does anyone have a good source for A1 sheets? I've been scouring google, but no luck.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by met on Apr 16, 2016 9:31:34 GMT 1, I finally bought a plan chest I'm trying to find sheets of glassine paper of A1 size to place between prints, but I can only seem to find 50x70cm sheets. Does anyone have a good source for A1 sheets? I've been scouring google, but no luck. Is your plan chest A0 in size or A1?
There is other protective paper you could use besides glassine, depending on your requirements.
twist65 mentioned the 75 x 100cm acid-free tissue paper at Atlantis, in a large basement area on Bonhill Street (about a 5 to 10-minute walk south of Old Street tube station). At 18 gsm, the tissue paper is about half the weight / thickness of typical glassine, but it doesn't have the water-resistant properties of glassine.
Although the boxes of 500 sheets at Atlantis are currently out of stock, they do have individual sheets that can be bought in-store (I got some this week). Each sheet is 10 or 11 pence, or ยฃ4.00 for 50.
A stronger, far more durable alternative would be bookbinding material that can be purchased at Shepherds, at 30 Gillingham Street near Victoria Station. See for example their 76.5 x 102cm acid-free sheets of Archival Kraft (120 gsm) or Archival Manila (225 gsm).
