The Connor Brothers ๐ฌ๐ง Mike Snelle & James Golding, by Dr Plip on Oct 12, 2014 11:36:05 GMT 1, I just read through the story of Peggy Irving. It's a mashup of Katharine Hepburn's image and the concept of the movie, Forrest Gump. Very odd.

The Connor Brothers ๐ฌ๐ง Mike Snelle & James Golding, by Deleted on Oct 12, 2014 16:08:03 GMT 1, Serious question - do people buy art more for the image, or the backstory? No set answer on that one fed, too many different types of people and reasons for buying art, i find an artists story/history of where they came from/Journey to prominence really interesting in itself, i find people interesting in general everyone has a story to tell, the story for me is part of the art, take mr B , i think his story is as interesting as his art, its a package, the 2 go hand in hand. Take the connor bros, their so called actual life story is far more interesting than the concocted escaped from a cult story, problem with them is there is no trust in them as people, what is the truth, the newspaper interview seems manufactured, sugar coated and the art also feels manufactured off the back of it. Fair points. I just wonder if people like the work so much, if they'd be able to get over the deception and be able to still enjoy the work produced?

The Connor Brothers ๐ฌ๐ง Mike Snelle & James Golding, by mace on Oct 12, 2014 20:37:43 GMT 1, I don't have a problem with that story at all, apart from the fact that Golding seems to be a quite unpleasant fellow. Snelle made a sh*tload of money with Black Rat, so what, nothing wrong with that.
They used a pseudonym - nothing unusual for street/urban art at all.
They made up a story for the pseudonym - hey, we're talking about art here. I see this as an act of art in itself. I'm sure people bought their stuff because they liked the images, not because of the hilarious story.
Felix does the canvases - hello ? Do you think the employees of Hirst, Obey, Banksy, Faile etc. etc. etc. are just there to bring coffee to their masters ?
Actually, I find this story a bit funny. I would not feel betrayed if I bought from them (which I didn't cause their stuff is obvious cr*p).

The Connor Brothers ๐ฌ๐ง Mike Snelle & James Golding, by Prescription Art on Oct 13, 2014 19:43:46 GMT 1, Leaving apart any previous misdemeanours, I don't really understand the opprobrium offered up here. People in creative fields often use pseudonyms or make up back stories. I'm a big fan of a band called Goat, whose biography is as follows: "Goat are a collective of musicians who hail from a small and very remote village called Korpolombolo in deepest darkest Sweden. Legend has it that for centuries, the inhabitants of the village of Korpolombolo were dedicated to the worship and practices of Voodoo. This strange and seemingly unlikely activity was apparently introduced into the area after a travelling witch doctor and a handful of her disciples were led to Korpolombolo by following a cipher hidden within their most sacred of ancient scriptures. The reason it led them there is unknown, but their Voodoo influence quickly took hold over the whole village and so they made it their home - there, they were able to practice their craft unnoticed and unbothered for several centuries. This was until their non-Christian ways were discovered by the Church and they were burned out by the crusaders, the survivors cursing the village over their shoulders as they fled. To this day, the now picturesque village of Korpolombolo is still haunted by this Voodoo curse; the power of the curse can be felt throughout the grooves of this Goat record. " Obviously this is bollocks, but it makes them more interesting & allows them to act out a persona that differs from reality... which frankly might be rather dull. Ehm? The place is called Korpilombolo and is as real as I am.
I wasn't disputing that there was a place called Korpilombolo or that the band originate from there. I suspect the voodoo part is rather made up.

The Connor Brothers ๐ฌ๐ง Mike Snelle & James Golding, by Poster Bob on Oct 16, 2014 12:45:31 GMT 1, I really like the work they put out and I was thinking about purchasing a work by them until I found out who they were. The issue with me is not the bullshit back story, that I find humorous, but the fact that they're thieving assholes.

The Connor Brothers ๐ฌ๐ง Mike Snelle & James Golding, by Deleted on Oct 17, 2014 1:55:40 GMT 1, Never trust a junkie.
I just took the art at face value before they were exposed and face value wa sthat I couldn't belive how people were impressed by copies of paperback novel covers with words from other covers just blatantly copied as in just plagiarism and moving around speech bubbles.
If people bought the crap I don't care what backstory they used or made up so that dealers could re sell this stuff to gullible buyers and collectors.
and letss face it dealers are in business to sell and make a profit so even if they knew the truth about the arts origins would turn a blind eye and use the story about the brothers escape and all that BS.
Good luck to them for getting people to buy this stuff and it's not as if they made billions from promoting a story about some bloke being the son of god that people many believe to be true so they aint sinners in that way.
The big neg for the two guys is the comments left on the Telegraph article accusing them of ripping of artists and a charity and that they have no integrity when it comes to people they do business with.

The Connor Brothers ๐ฌ๐ง Mike Snelle & James Golding, by iamzero on Oct 17, 2014 7:30:24 GMT 1, Clearly a pair of wankers but can't help thinking that the only people that lose out in this kind of sting are more wankers that have bought the art with the soul intention of making money? Ordinary good people that purchased artwork with the old fashioned of hanging it and enjoying it will still continue to enjoy it and not care... Or have I completely missed the point of art?

The Connor Brothers ๐ฌ๐ง Mike Snelle & James Golding, by balibob on Oct 17, 2014 10:34:44 GMT 1, Just caught up with this, thanks Wizzy. I met Mike in 2009, seemed a nice guy, never met Golding but I can remember the huge threads about his activities, so I wouldn't want to. If I had bought a piece of Connor bros art it would be because I liked it enough to put it on my wall. I normally wouldn't be the slightest bit interested in the backstory as that has absolutely no bearing as to whether I buy a piece or not. For me, art is a visual thing and I usually have no interest what so ever in the artists thought processes or inspirations in constructing the piece, and if you found out it was just 2 other dudes and the Connor bros was just a front, for me that wouldn't have been a problem.
However, I would hate to monetarily support a person with Golding's background, and it is quite possible that someone who got ripped by him could have bought a Connor bros artwork totally unaware who their money was going to. I sincerely hope that the thieving bastard has developed a conscience and repays everyone he owes from his previous exploits. Fat chance.
