Ok. Let me put it another way. Why wasn't Martins work s**t when you were buying it?

Whatson, by Deleted on Oct 12, 2014 22:51:59 GMT 1, I've sold off everything I had by him as my tastes have changed significantly and I think he's s**t. I am curious- what changed your mind. Apparently, you liked his *shit* before... What is it that you do not like?
*I* find him more creative than Invader, for example... Do you think Invader's work is shit as well?

Lovely. I'm still down with the lemonade drinkers.... I hope the Dom Perignon doesn't taste 's**t' one day also. Just don't get into Banksy's work because that, my friend, is farmhouse scrumpy........

Whatson, by graffuturism on Oct 13, 2014 1:23:15 GMT 1, Trash is a little harsh. While I'm not fond of his work, I'd like to see the members on here shouting and moaning about it try to create stencil work similar to his quality. Very true. I guess it's easy for certain keyboard warriors to slag off others even though they've achieved very little themselves. There's no problem criticising artists (I don't like the new Nick Walker print and I said so) but when it comes down to people just being insulting that probably says more about them as people than the artist. I dont agree that you need to be an artist to be critical of one, but I do think anyone that is being critical should take some time to explain why they might feel a certain way. Just saying someone is garbage tells me that opinion really might not be worth much as they failed to even explain themselves. That being said I am not commenting on Whatson as an artist, I posted the critique RJ wrote because it was a thought out observation and written in a way that you understand the perspective. Also I agreed with the article in reference to other artists in Nuart, not that I am saying all work by both artists is bad. I dont know enough to really have a critical opinion on them. As an artist I will say negative comments, and critical responses to your work can be the most educational and transformative experiences you can have if you dont take them personal.

Whatson, by natstan on Oct 13, 2014 2:14:30 GMT 1, Actually it's not so much that he tags the same in every of his works than the fact that he release a print (whether as his own work or a collab with other artists) every so often that rubs me off the wrong way. It just came to a point where too many is simply too much.
At least MBW's works look different each time, be it good, bad or crap...

Not that i blame them. This is a pretty shocking result. i wonder if it is a one and done .. or if that is really where Whatson's work is headed. This is getting into the "would i rather have Whatson canvas or a unsigned Banksy" conversation...

Whatson, by dazarino on Oct 13, 2014 15:31:14 GMT 1, I.think what people are forgetting is that his work is in high demand now. I believe it's down to his work ethic ,talent and great networking. To think he has shown and sold works of art all over the world is testament to his determination to be considered a successful artist.
It's fine for people on here who don't rate his work to give an opinion, but alot of members do like it and to call it shit bob is a tad disrespectful.

Whatson, by eschiff on Oct 13, 2014 15:38:39 GMT 1, I though RJ from Vandalog summarised a lot of our feelings here about Martin's work in his article about Nuart (which itself was quite good)
blog.vandalog.com/2014/10/the-two-sides-of-nuart/
'Whatson and DOTDOTDOT just arenโt very good, and I donโt think theyโre ever going to get very good. They are, frankly, unoriginal, and their work is the worst kind of decoration. Their murals are essentially the opposite of dรฉtournements. Rather than appropriating the symbols of power and modifying them to disrupt the status quo, Whatson and DOTDOTDOT reference politically and socially charged styles of art (tags and stencils) to create meaningless decor and support existing power structures.
There are artists who, when I cover them on Vandalog, people give me a hard time about. And when I ask these people giving me a hard time why, they say something like, โBecause I respect what you do and the artists you write about, and posting about [INSERT ARTIST THEY CONSIDER SUB-PAR HERE] devalues the rest of the site and the artists you cover, and helps the reputation of an artist who doesnโt deserve that boost.โ Thatโs exactly how I feel about seeing DOTDOTDOT and Martin Whatson at Nuart. Their contributions devalue the rest of the festival.'

I'm just glad I didn't waste 4 years of my life on a fine art degree, when I've got such experts to tell me what's good and what's bad.

Whatson, by Graffiti Prints on Oct 13, 2014 16:30:07 GMT 1, First of all sorry to whatson he begs me not to post on here in his defence ever!
but I love him to bits and can not help myself, he is my mate and I love his work!
I always surprised by comments here and IMO the lack of understanding Of the way the art market works.
Comments like I now have champagne tastes Poster Bob are just ugly no matter how I look at it. So un street and would have been kicked all over years ago here even if people agreed what you said.
Always the same old posters/haters trying to prove what? More exposer or success there target gets worse the hate and comments get!
Most buyers don't read blogs or forums, that's what I found anyway no matter what you want to believe
Flippers and passionate lovers of streetart read them, they are only 10% of the buying market max
I am surprised rj did not come and pose the comments to whatson, other artists and myself.
we were all in the same hotel in clear sight but no he choose to say it from behind a keyboard, so easy to shout anything from there!

Just because you spend hours on end on this forum and think it is tiring and old doesnt mean that some person walking into a gallery and seeing a Whatson piece for the first time shouldn't get to form their own opinion. just say you dont like something and move on. dont be critical the artist and everyone around them who enjoy it. geez.. this is the same conversation going on in the Nick Walker thread.
NOTE: changed a word to "be critical" from "attack".. typing faster than thinking this morning

Whatson, by natstan on Oct 13, 2014 17:27:35 GMT 1, First of all sorry to whatson he begs me not to post on here in his defence ever! but I love him to bits and can not help myself, he is my mate and I love his work! Most buyers don't read blogs or forums, that's what I found anyway no matter what you want to believe Flippers and passionate lovers of streetart read them, they are only 10% of the buying market max I am surprised rj did not come and pose the comments to whatson, other artists and myself. we were all in the same hotel in clear sight but no he choose to say it from behind a keyboard, so easy to shout anything from there! With all due respect to Whatson, it's great to hear he doesn't want anyone to speak up against critics for him as long as he enjoys what he do. The thread started by asking if his works is really worth that much and one would reasonably expect a can of worms to be opened with a subject like that. He has the right to continue his working style as long as there are people who support him. But if one does not listen to that 'minority' group who are actually the ones telling him where he went wrong (as opposed to the majority who gladly just lap up everything he offers), is that a good thing?
If an artist can take every comment, even a negative one, as a constructive suggestion to relook into his works and improve his art, is that not a good thing?
RJ did nothing wrong imo. He is entitled to his opinions and he doesn't need to go up to Whatson's face and tell him what he thinks. I watch live performances with terrible acting or singing but that doesn't mean I have to go up to every single one of them after the show to tell them how much they suck.

Whatson, by Happy Shopper on Oct 13, 2014 17:30:10 GMT 1, I think there's a bunch of different camps in this forum... Political art vs pretty pictures, stencil lovers vs muralists, new school vs old school... and there's occasionally blurring of the lines.
Why don't we all agree to just like the stuff I like, and move on?
