Lancelot William Thwaytes loses case against leading auction house after alleging that he was given negligent advice about value of The Cardsharps
The following year, renowned collector Sir Denis Mahon, the new owner, publicly claimed it was a genuine work by the artist, valuing it at £10m.
After a four-week-long hearing in the High Court, he has now lost the case, after a judge ruled the “highly qualified” experts employed by Sotheby’s had reasonably come to the view that the quality of the painting "was not sufficiently high to indicate that it might be by Caravaggio". ""

'£10m' painting sold for £42,000, by Unica on Jan 19, 2015 4:52:09 GMT 1, I can't see why Sothebys are crowing about the quality of their expertise, it appears they got it wrong. Sadly for the previous owner.

I have met people who had had similar experience with them and other large auction house

'£10m' painting sold for £42,000, by maxf on Jan 19, 2015 22:46:41 GMT 1, Different scale but a large auction house told me a vintage Cartier watch I found was a fake - I was going to just bin it, but kept it in a drawer. A watch collecting friend ended up taking a look, opening the case up and finding it to be genuine. I sold it a bit later for £1k or so.
Smaller scale by far, but genuine experience.
