Invader Alias vs Invasion Kit, by Oski on Jan 25, 2015 0:09:18 GMT 1, According to Space Invader's website, he has invasions in 62 cities with 3,060 invaders placed in various spots. My understanding is there is an Alias for each invader placed in the streets. Meanwhile through 15 invasion kits, there have been 2,800 total kits sold. So why is it that it is quite common to see invasion kits on eBay, here, and elsewhere and yet we don't see many Aliases floating around?

I'm guessing because you have to add a couple zeros to buy one

Ha, I realize the cost differential. But with there being more Aliases than kits (I'm assuming) I just don't see people showing them around here. Heck we see more Banksy canvases than Aliases out in the open.

Invader fans love 1/1's ! always been the case, even all those micro mosaic book covers never do they come up for sale.

Invader Alias vs Invasion Kit, by Deleted on Jan 25, 2015 1:38:26 GMT 1, My first thought goes with the lack of visibility on the forum. We do have some very serious collectors on this forum but it's a small percentage. The Banksy canvas's seen are from just a few collectors and a couple lower level galleries. (I don't mean this as an insult)
Invader has used pretty well known galleries to sell his aliases and thus have been bought by non internet chatting collectors and you are far more likely to see them in big auction houses or other galleries vs. them posting or trying to sell them here.

Invader Alias vs Invasion Kit, by Oski on Jan 25, 2015 1:46:47 GMT 1, Just did a quick search for Aliases in the FS forum and there have only been a handful on offer and the last one was from Nov. 2013. As rare as hens teeth as you guys say in the UK. Makes me regret not paying more attention when it was fairly easy to pick one up at Jonthan LeVine Gallery a few years back. The last time originals were available there was for the Wooster Collective 10 year retrospective in 2013.

I agree he only picks some of his invaders to make an alias. Think size is an issue.

How can you say size is an issue ? did you not just see the 2 alias just sell ?

Invader Alias vs Invasion Kit, by Oski on Jan 25, 2015 14:57:45 GMT 1, This is probably the largest Alias I've seen at 208 CM wide and it went for about £170,000 at Sotheby's, imagine what the whole side of a building would go for, lol.
www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2015/boundless-contemporary-art-hk0556/lot.70.html
Thinking about it, I'd have to agree that Invader only selects a portion of his pieces as Aliases, probably only a couple of hundreds out there (if not only several dozens).
I had enquired regarding Aliases from "Over the Influence", apparently the sole provider of Invader Aliases, Rubiks, and sculptures at this point, and they sent a questionnaire which concluded with budget ranges starting at EUR 10,000 and last selection is over EUR 100,000...crikey!

Invader Alias vs Invasion Kit, by londonfx on Jan 25, 2015 15:29:51 GMT 1, I'm a huge invader fan and have dragged my giielfriend around many cities trying to get a photo of one of his pieces.
I don't own an invader print or kit as I find them over priced. Obviously other people don't, as they always sell out. But just curious as to weather or not people think invader pieces are over priced or not?

Invader Alias vs Invasion Kit, by Oski on Jan 25, 2015 15:53:29 GMT 1, I'm a huge invader fan and have dragged my giielfriend around many cities trying to get a photo of one of his pieces. I don't own an invader print or kit as I find them over priced. Obviously other people don't, as they always sell out. But just curious as to weather or not people think invader pieces are over priced or not? For a long time I just didn't get Invader and thought that it's just very DIY and that he's a one-trick pony. I never bothered looking at his work when it was readily available here in NYC through his invasions and gallery representation. But then over time I see his continued exploration of 80s influences, video games, cartoons, music, Rubik's Cube, etc. and finally the Aladdin Sane release last year kind of hit a trifecta for me.
Overpriced is an opinion of relative value. Seeing as there is a wide and deep market for his work, I would say that it is not. As you pointed out, his work sells out quickly and there is an active secondary market. I think his art appeals to the street scene as much as the gallery/auction set and he has established himself as one of the leading street/urban artists.
I also don't believe he is going to be a flash in the pan. He's shown commitment to his style over the years and will continue to push his aesthetic through his invasions.

I can say that. Because yes they were big. But some of his invasions are massive, there's no way he'd make the man alias. IMO.

Invader Alias vs Invasion Kit, by Deleted on Jan 25, 2015 19:14:58 GMT 1, Things change over the years.
Apparently every piece has an alias or double.
On his site he says he has a team and on another blog says he always works alone.
""How many people are involved in this project?
I am surrounded by a small team, this is a very confidential operation."" www.space-invaders.com/about/
> Street art invasion: “I’m often asked how many people are in my group, the response there is no group, I work alone and travel a lot” www.streetlove.fr/pixelart/1-000-space-invaders.html
"Every Space Invader is unique! Every one is created with a double, an Alias, a clone which is archieved in plexiglas" www.streetlove.fr/pixelart/1-000-space-invaders.html
I"s the fact that your invaders aren’t for sale a reaction to the elitist art world?
No, the elitism for me is more about access: there are very few people going to see shows in art galleries and museums. In old times the art was in churches, and everybody was going to church."

Invader Alias vs Invasion Kit, by Invaded 420 on Jan 25, 2015 20:54:28 GMT 1, Yeah. Just like Ravenna 01. Was commissioned but its still part of the invasion with a number. But doubt there's an alias. Things are sometimes lost in translation with invader. Ever streetpiece can have an alias. But doesn't necessarily mean it does have an alias. Just the option is there.

I presume in this case alias means,
"An alias is simply a small file which represents where your original document is located. It is not a copy of your original file. It is simply a pointer to the original file." www.mactrast.com/2012/05/mac-tip-creating-and-using-an-alias/
as opposed to a nom de plume used by writers and other creative people and criminals and spies.

Invader Alias vs Invasion Kit, by beatztom on Jan 26, 2015 14:04:40 GMT 1, Here's my thoughts on the alias subject:
It's highly probable that Invader has an amazing quantity of tiles in his workshop. Most likely more than necessary to reproduce any street piece more than once.
His pieces can easily be assembled by pretty much anyone who has a decent picture of the original to reproduce.
Considering these two presumptions, what's to say that he actually produces all aliases? He could very well prepare the street pieces in double and put one aside, disassembled in a box for storage efficiency. When the order for an alias comes through it would be easy to assemble the piece and deliver it to the client.
I could also easily imagine some super rich client ordering an alias As large as that Miami one, art collectors have been known to collect more extravagant works than a pretty small tiled wall!!
I hope one day to have my own authentic alias, but until then I'm quite satisfied with the one my girlfriend made me!

I guess this is one way to keep control of his market value, make sure supply is limited and trickle out Aliases through high profile auctions or select galleries. Obviously the latest Sotheby's auction pegged a new high watermark for the value of his Aliases and is funding his Africa jaunt currently.
