Best Sandra Chevrier Image, by kbfrombk on Feb 2, 2015 0:55:54 GMT 1, Sad to say I actually enjoy the color-line works way more than the comic ones.
The connection between the ACTUAL comics and the works' substance is just a massive failed-to-land disconnection in my head; at onset of the series, I enjoyed the comic motif but then after time it became evident the comics delivered very little by way of 'message', outside of motif parameters.
Can anyone tell me who's painting socially-minded, supportive pictures of full-figure chicks or ::gasp:: black chicks? Sandra doesn't seem to have met any of those worth advocating for and the straight-haired Eurobabe parade is turning into a yawn-fest (clearly not only) for me.

I enjoy the color blocks as well. But my kids love the comic books, so we have an original with superman.
As far as races, Stereotypes etc, I laughed aloud. You're treating her as if she's coca cola, or a corporation advertising their product. Get over that, quickly.

If I'm anything, it's over that ;-)
All I meant was to offer an intriguing point for discussion. I knew you would react reasonably as you have. Gentleman as always @hxfour.

If you know some please contact me:) You may need to have a closer look to the collage to figure out that she creates a new narration linked to the model. There's a story that you can read in the painted eyes but there's also another one in the collage that brings another meaning. 90% of the time she uses superheroes in a weakness situation. For me, Sandra is a portrait painter and what she's doing at the moment is a really nice example of what a post-modern portrait could be. But that's only my interpretation and my point of view. Each to their own. I'm a huge Basquiat fan but my father only see some children scribbles and he can't believe people are paying millions for it.

Best Sandra Chevrier Image, by kbfrombk on Feb 2, 2015 1:29:34 GMT 1, It's the beauty of the whole thing, isn't it JP!?! Differences in opinion. The World.
As with @hxfour I appreciate your ever-classy perspective and input, especially on this specific topic. I wouldn't dare address or attack the associated/offered connotations or explanations and of course I encourage people to have their own beliefs and opinions and explanations for the art they like (and don't like).
Maybe better to say that whatever meaning or emotional connection I had begun to form early on in the series has now become rather (negatively) watered down and diluted by the stream of 'safe' and IMO redundant/narrow releases.

That's totally untrue. I'm the one who pointed out that her watercolor dripping eyes were looking like Marion's works. She didn't f?& know Marion's work!! She was painting eyes since she was 6 years old!! She was also doing that kind of eyes at the same time she was doing her first Cage series. Marion do not own copyright on watercolor dripping eyes. Please google: ''watercolor dripping eyes '' and you'll find a bunch of people doing it!! She stopped painting that because it was really common. That's it!!There's nothing hidden behind this. For those who are interested to see her Cage series debut here are some pictures:
My point concerning the sexiest thing is why on here she's almost the only one artist having her thread derailed and easily criticized. No one cares to criticize: Erik Jones, Rone, David Walker, Tristan Eaton, etc, etc They are all doing female portraits for years! I asked myself why and I noticed she was the only female artist but maybe it's just a coincidence.

Best Sandra Chevrier Image, by randomname on Feb 2, 2015 1:39:07 GMT 1, Randomname- "Sandra said as much when she said it happened by accident when her IKEA dresser broke and she didn't have anything else to do with the comics she'd been gluing to them" This is completely false and is toying with the article. Don't do that. It's FACT that she was already doing the cages at that time but she was doing it with color blocks instead of comics. The comics added another element of heroism to the expectations of women, in her case, being a single mother. Tiresome. I don't think you know how true and false works. This is what she said verbatim. Which is what I repeated.
The comic book collage was another idea that was born by accident. I was working on a DIY project by covering one of my Ikea dressers with comic book pages but it broke during the process. I had no idea what to do with all the comics I bought, but by recycling them on to my art, the idea of creating these different cages came to life.
As far as the color blocks go, yes she was trying to get away from knocking off Marion Bolognesi. One of those attempts was to add blocks of color. So are you of the opinion those blocks of color represented society's unrealistic beauty standards placed on women?
The more you know the more obvious it is the social commentary was concocted after the fact. It's a clever bit of branding. But if you think these were rooted in social commentary, that is false.

Fair point.. I think it's the mixed blessing that SC happens to be a steady topic of conversation, in general and not just in a negative derailing way. Plus, frankly, the lady sells a ton more stuff (more often) than the guys you listed above, as far as I'm ably aware.
Perhaps worth noting, my posts concern the Art To Buy realm as opposed to the Art Everywhere realm...
If, over the course of a year, David Walker put out a series of five giclee prints at increasingly heightened prices, featuring his typical colors technique on a set of four (because the last release would be a giclee diptych of the same woman, duh) relatively similar-looking women, then yes absolutely I would be on that thread asking similar questions and making similar observations.

Best Sandra Chevrier Image, by natstan on Feb 2, 2015 2:06:19 GMT 1, I'm not on anyone's side but what I infer from the said article is that SC has this storyline of cages over women's faces using color elements etc all along, and she stumbled on this comic collage by accident one fine day, thinking it adds another dimension to that storyline she already had. Makes sense?
However, did we bother to ask ourselves if that very same storyline justify the necessity for so many images of beautiful women faces which essentially explains the same old? I think that could be what some people have an issue with and looking to see how she can possibly evolve from there. This is not a personal attack on the SC though, as it can happen to any artist who adopts a formula in his or her art.

Marion was the only one doing it six years ago. If it's such a common style, why would you tell her it looked like Marion's work and not that it was a common style?
Regardless, I would have been more inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt if she had not been evasive when I mentioned the similarity on Facebook. She implied that she did it before Marion when that clearly wasn't the case. Then she deleted her post after I mentioned Marion had been doing it several years longer. That didn't strike me as forthcoming and honest.
If you want to defend your artist, you should do it with facts. I've pissed off several members with my opinions on males artists. I really don't care. This forum hypes up dozens of mediocre artists then people get upset when you deviate from the hype. Suggesting that someone should be immune to critique due to her gender is in fact sexist. And the coward's way out of open and honest debate.

Truth: She stumbled on the comics in a period where she was exploring her "cages" series where blocks of color act as masks that hold women back (or whatever)
Your truth: she stumbled on comics and created a series around putting them over women's faces after being criticized for having similar work to another artist. She then decided to create the cage series.

I asked myself why and I noticed she was the only female artist but maybe it's just a coincidence. Again just back off the Sexist angle because you dont have a leg to stand on with that one. Eric Jones work is also suffering from similar aspects of why her work is being critiqued but he isnt mentioned on here really at all where as SC is constantly being talked about and releasing new I mean the same type of work.
Rone again isnt really mentioned on here much and he also paints large scale murals with his work not just sticking to the studio and a controlled environment of canvas and paint, I give him more respect overall because he is scaling the work on surfaces that are sometimes impossible to paint on. Not saying the overall images or concept is different his work is very similar but he is progressing at a normal pace and not on peoples radar as a anomaly.
David walker again not near the same amount of attention on his work but I wouldnt hold back critiquing his work if he was a common topic or people were here hyping his work to be the second coming of Rubens.
Tristan Eaton is very well rounded and maybe if you want to look up the definition of progression look at his past 5 years as an artist. You might even say too much progression and changes, but thats a whole other argument. His work is constantly changing and if his past is anything to tell about his future he will move on to a new series of work as soon as he done with working this style out. Again looking at any of these artists work you never even think about the gender or the artist. I would critique them regardless of what gender they are.
Again just state real facts dont just throw shit out there and expect people to agree with you or be swayed by your argument.

Best Sandra Chevrier Image, by kbfrombk on Feb 2, 2015 2:55:55 GMT 1, That should really be expressly stated by me too, I bet... My points have nothing to do AT ALL with the gender of the artist they're aimed at and furthermore: I think the artist's gender is being misappropriated (by some, to some degree) as reason TO support her rather than criticize her, with which I also take issue.
Believe it or not.

funny of all the facts up there that's the part you focus on. (Again)
I'm typing on my phone next to my 18 month old while he falls asleep in bed, didn't want to drag on the obvious and the "whatever" clears me if I'm taken the wrong way in the reasoning.
Aaaaaaaanyways... I'm an owner of a beautiful original. I will not buy another comic cages but I would 100% buy an older cages. And as I said before, according to her track record, she'll be exploring something else soon, I'm excited to see if I'd want to add it to the collection as well.

Best Sandra Chevrier Image, by sin on Feb 2, 2015 3:03:42 GMT 1, My point concerning the sexiest thing is why on here she's almost the only one artist having her thread derailed and easily criticized. No one cares to criticize: Erik Jones, Rone, David Walker, Tristan Eaton, etc, etc They are all doing female portraits for years! I asked myself why and I noticed she was the only female artist but maybe it's just a coincidence. Again just state real facts dont just throw s**t out there and expect people to agree with you or be swayed by your argument. A post so on point I wish I wrote it.

Anyway, congrats on the baby. Some things are much more important than art. And congrats on the original. Like I said, I like her work for what it is. A juxtaposition of fine art and comic book art. I just think they've written a false narrative to make it out to be more important than it is.

I bet more artists than we want to know have the same dialogue. Leave some things to chance.

Best Sandra Chevrier Image, by sake on Feb 2, 2015 12:48:23 GMT 1, Given that she said the comic book element was an accident, saying now that they represent society's unrealistic expectations of female beauty feels like a contrivance to me. As someone else pointed out, the fact that she uses beautiful, photoshopped models in all of her images seems to contradict that. You could argue she's in fact perpetuating and reinforcing unrealistic standards of beauty. I also never said her work needs to evolve. I question the back story of what it evolved from. I realize you have a vested interest in defending her image. But to suggest that any criticism of her work is sexist is dishonest and cowardly. Classic comic book images placed strikingly on beautifully photoshopped sexy women - what's not for a boy 17-25 to love? Or for those with the 17-25 year old boy eternally alive in themselves? For me, the various artists using anonymous hot women as a base for their work is tiresome, has been since day one, and over time will have little shelf life. For now, just a great marketing concept if done correctly. Will have to disagree on the using beautiful hot women as something with little shelf life..

I've been trying to get another original since I got it, but that is almost impossible..

Its a varnish that gives the impression of cracking....my daughter did a couple of pieces with it, its pretty good stuff!
