I can not recommended apple enough but to address your issues:
Yes, numbers will read and convert excel files but if she is using that program or its documents consistently then it's probably easiest to just buy excel for Mac. I myself use numbers but I know many that used excel and when they switched to Mac they bought the Msft OSX office package. The Mac eco system is hard to beat especially if you are using their phones ect. Better performance and little to zero spam or virus issues. Hard to compete with a company that makes its hardware and OS. Hope that helps

Is cleanmymac really ok then? I've always been reticent to download it as I find as many negative reviews as positive , but I've always wondered what is the best way to perform routine maintenance and cleaning on my macbookpro compared to the hundreds of options for the pc.

MacBooks ...... Talk to me ?, by letiss on Apr 2, 2015 15:00:19 GMT 1, John Lewis did a black Friday or is it Black Monday deal last year which was decent. Interesting to know they do a 3 year warranty. I'm thinking about upgrading my 2011 MBP 13" to a 15" retna thingy. As I'm a part time student, it seems there's a 10% discount too if you go with Apple directly.

MacBooks ...... Talk to me ?, by Hubble Bubble on Apr 2, 2015 15:54:25 GMT 1, It is a constant mystery to me how anybody chooses PC over Mac - unless, of course, there is a specific reason. I'm not a gamer but I hear that PC is the better platform for this. But I simply find Mac soooo much more intuitive and user friendly that - for me at least - it's a no brainer.
Letiss - your student discount is triggered by you ordering through your university/college email address and furnishing them with details of such.
Have people talked about the Apple refurb site? That's always good and is worth looking at. Bought an iMac off there recently and saved 15% or so.

I think there's some open source Photoshop software you can get. I also believe older version of Photoshop is available from the Adobe website for free. Orrrrrrr, if you know where to look, you can get the latest version for free...if you know what I mean.

Ssd,16gb,i7...? Mbp ?

Have 27, 21 and mbp all in studio and genuinely have to toggle between all three when some shitty update occurs or an external drive, printer, miscellaneous pice of shit software doesn't work on either and I am on a deadline

Love my Mac, but real close to gutting the OS and reloading Maverick. What spec do you have to do 4k edit without too much hanging around ? Ssd,16gb,i7...? Mbp ? All of the 4k is being cut on the Pro tower with the specs you mentioned accept I have 32gb of ram and even then I need to cut using camera raw because for some reason the mac (or maybe avid) is getting along with ProRes4444. Will probably upgrade to 64gb of RAM soon.
With my Mbp I have yet to be brave enough to try cutting 4k, I've been transcoding everything down to H264 to cut. But with the specs you mentioned I have yet to have edit issues, BUT Yosemite with will change my profile settings for literally no reason... It is incredibly frustrating to try and transfer 3TB worth of footage and have absolutely no idea how long it will take (and that is just one of many issues Yosemite has given me).

The fact it hasn't had an upgrade might mean chance to get a top-end unit with some discount. I'd also consider the point made in the earlier post re. Performance of the new model against previous specs.
I love my Mac but as every year goes by I struggle more and more to distinguish between Mac and windows. It's not that MS has caught up or anything, apple just don't seem to have evolved other than to become thinner and lighter.
I would suggest an i5 as a minimum and get plenty of SSD in there too - a big benefit of my mac is the ability to run a windows VM as well so if there is any issue between Mac OS and windows based file systems I just fire up the VM and deal with it

Interesting thread, have been thinking of switching to Mac after my windows laptop gave up on me and realising the chaper windows laptops weren't the spec I needed. So far pretty certain I'll switch to a MacBook Pro RD 13. Not to fussed about CD drive and there seems other benefits to the RD in comparison although I'm sure either would be fine. Partners sister works in an Apple Store so 17% discount also
