Mr. André 🇸🇪 André Saraiva • Mr A • Monsieur A , by Lroy on Mar 1, 2015 22:00:21 GMT 1, Fair enough. No contact with him, I just liked that square face. The problem with anyone (with permission or not) placing images etc in the natural world is that it could lead to those less educated (or stupid as Mr a) thinking xxx did it so why can't i? Although it can look good in these natural areas it should be out of bounds for such activity Yes, you are right too. It can gives ideas to followers, and there is a lake of respect about people and nature. We are occidental people so we can go in your continent or country to do what we want... ( quickly said ) ...

For the sake of debate, a couple of questions for you:
1. Does this have any impact upon your willingness to purchase work by André?
2. If the graffiti had been funnier or just better, or if the artist responsible had been someone whose work you were a big fan of and collected, would you be more forgiving about this vandalism?

Back to calling Andre a Poser, are you from Paris and have knowledge of artists not respecting his work. I have always heard good things about his work in the streets and that he continues to paint illegally regardless of his stature as an established artist. I am not arguing how artistic merit as his work is what it is and he sticks to what he does, I am just wondering how you can say he is a Poser when clearly he has had the respect of his peers for some time now.

I understand. the majority of the French are treated as "Poseurs". When I lived in London, I went to all the concerts and when people talked to me at the bar, they all told me that on the Frenchies - but chic - lol. It's true: when you look at the Palace in the past nights, when you go to a rock concert in France, nobody dancing and each is more busy to hold a glass of champagne or beer and be careful if people are watching them or not, not even trying to move one foot to dance. I have lived more than 20 years in Paris. I say this without brag, I knew Paris as my pocket, I was playing in rock/punk groups and hung around with known underground people (Mar Caro, Béatrice Dalle, the Berus, the raia, I even played with Guernica and the members of the Berruriers blacks, etc. and lot of other guys or girls which I prefer to remain silent - of shame - the name given what they became in worldly terms commercial, etc... ° .
We also much went out one night, but it was for partying and "to crash the party ( sneek in ? ) " in the bourgeois evenings organised by the son of rich, and picoler, put the area - but not aggressively, with fun and laughs -, etc...
Returning to Saraiva, while he - was already born? lol , I did not heard of him then ! !! - made stencils, my friends and I were doing tags and small stencils or drawings policies anarchist tendency, fanzines or associative exhibitions at the garage, butcher shop, well before them. They were laughed to see tags as stencils of Miss Tic, there was no political message in them. You will find Saraiva (Mr A) in all the trendy and hype journals Parisian evenings. Sure the " Parisian" ( I make a caricature ) , is ultra Parisien and hipster, and hates the countryside and rocks ( maybe he was drunk but it is not an excuse, he won't do that in France, because he has no celebrity in ordinary people : anyway it s like for the punk movement, all is coming from England, who knows Street-art in France , apart a few of us ? ) and prefers to be known by organising evenings.
If you wish, I have several newspapers such as Libération, Les Inrockuptibles, some links about articles - neither good nor evil - speaking, of the " Baron " - lol, what a pity ! - happening are time - and money - to show in the Parisian nights. At least, this would not be Banksy ( even if he does in private ) , Invader, C215, Tilt, Dran and many artists (most do not have the penny and are much more political) that will show them with a bow tie and the glass of champagne in hand every week in the newspapers people and hipsters. If Saraiva, - very good businessman and seller of goodies - should no show his face, every week in the newspapes, no doubt would I love it yet and do not made this hard - i reckon - critic. For the 'stars people', no quarter! lol
ps but maybe, in private, he is a ncie guy.. As me, as you, as a lot of people. Anyway. Sorry for the translation.

Mr. André 🇸🇪 André Saraiva • Mr A • Monsieur A , by Lesson1 on Mar 2, 2015 10:11:49 GMT 1, This is sad. Very disappointed in Mr. A or anyone who would deface a national park I agree completely. If the graffiti had been funnier or just better, or if the artist responsible had been someone whose work you were a big fan of and collected, would you be more forgiving about this vandalism?
Wel, good questions but they need to be changed in order. I own a couple of his pieces and love them. 2) I'm not forgiving and think it is immature of him 1) because of 2 above I would not tend to look out for him but may in the future get another of his works, but, it would have to be amazing and hope the sale didn't contribute any money to himself There is many a musician who are known idiots that I love their music. James brown was a fool, but very funky. Similar principle applies for me

It's OK if one likes stuff done by poseurs.
The doodle on the rock above is the same as tagging a name on everything by little shits who are just vandals.

The subject of moral principles and values held by individuals is of great interest to me. Some people have an unwavering commitment to their principles. With other people, their principles are flexible — to be abandoned or brushed aside whenever they become inconvenient, e.g. in cases where remaining loyal to one's principles could result in a lost financial opportunity.
If I may ask, would your answers above be any different if you saw that the defacer of the national park was becoming increasingly recognised and respected as an artist, making his commercial work more sought-after, more highly collectible, and by most accounts probably a wise future investment?

Mr. André 🇸🇪 André Saraiva • Mr A • Monsieur A , by chaturz on Mar 3, 2015 11:31:54 GMT 1, Ill start by making the following statements: 1- I do not own any art by Mr A 2- I do not support the recent actions mentioned above
HOWEVER
I 100% agree with @speebe, of course he's an artist regardless of what anyone may think of his character "Mr A" I for one like the character and in fact he's been around long before the street art buzz. For anyone who thinks he was a nobody prior to exit I would ask you go and look back over any predating street art / graff / tagging books as there are an array that legitimise his work as a street artist.
As for the point made by met above I think it's a slightly pointless question / argument ( no offence) because it's easy to get all high and mighty / holier than thou with regards to an individual and an error of judgement they may have made but do those same individuals take a stance against corporates and and their unethical ways. Whoopty doo if someone chooses to buy art from Andre realising that he merely made an error in judgement like many of us have at one point or another. I find it more ironic that the people making judgements re the purchase of Mr As work are likely eating food produced by nestle/coca-cola (who taken part in unethical / immoral practices), buy cheap meat/eggs/milk ( promoting animal cruelty and driving farmers out of business) and either bank with or work for banks which.. Well do I even need to go there?
Maybe this is all a pointless rant but but let's have a little perspective. He's human , he made an error of judgement. This does not effect the legitimacy of his art.
Rant over.....till next time my UAA chums.

Don't remember who and which park. Anyway, all the artists and art critics condemned this. Why not for this A w.nker ? I am not an hater, but too much Is too much And THIS Man without Exit, would not be nothing apart an hipster Parisian tagging some walls and making affairs.. I think that he blocked me on his IG ( i have Never been there anyway ) , and I don't care, I wrote an hard comment about him on Kidult and Lush Sux IG... Well, forget my comment it s not important anyway.. He is being condemned.

Some errors are greater than others and some have larger consequences. I just hope he has a bit more trouble entering the USA through visa restrictions in the future. I'd also like to see him prosecuted in the USA for his error in judgment. Rather than just vent here, I have also contacted the US National Parks Service (www.nps.gov/jotr/contacts.htm ), as well as the US Customs and Border Control ( www.uscis.gov/about-us/contact-us) about this incident. I doubt anything will result from it, but it would be great if something did. If more "outraged" people here and elsewhere do the same, who knows, may make a difference. I'd love to be behind him in line at a US immigration checkpoint. It would be wonderful to watch him be asked politely by an agent to, "Please step out of the queue and into this little room over here."
Ill start by making the following statements: 1- I do not own any art by Mr A 2- I do not support the recent actions mentioned above HOWEVER I 100% agree with @speebe, of course he's an artist regardless of what anyone may think of his character "Mr A" I for one like the character and in fact he's been around long before the street art buzz. Good rant. I cannot think of one person who hasn't made an error in judgment. Nice. As I mentioned when that stupid woman left her bad graffiti the tagging in Nat'l Parks and posting to social media is a bit of a thing. Someone disagreed, I posted links, and here we are a short time later with an even more egregious example.
It appears this "artist" is about the self and ego, thus making him have a bit more in common with Hirst rather than the street. And his "art" sucks.

I wonder what would have happened if one caveman painted on another caveman's cave without permission. Wouldn't have ended well I suppose. But who knows.

If the national park has a policy and law about graffiti maybe it means Monsoieur André will be banned from the US ?

Maybe the mainstream media would apply pressure to the immigration service, but then that's exactly what this "man" wants. if I hear back, I'll post the info here. Not holding my breath though.

Mr. André 🇸🇪 André Saraiva • Mr A • Monsieur A , by Deleted on Mar 3, 2015 20:57:19 GMT 1, (see next post for updated info) Below you'll find a blank letter to copy and paste into the box. Hopefully this saves time for anyone interested in banning him from future travel to the US, but maybe doesn't have the time to complain.
Hello,
This is a complaint regarding a French man who decided to travel to the Joshua Tree National Park and vandalize it. You can read the story below:
www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/02/andre-saraiva-joshua-tree_n_6783700.html
I am not associated with the Huffington Post in any way. I am disgusted beyond measure by this vandalism and would like to see Mr. Andre Saraiva banned from entering our country in the future. If he is still in the US, I'd like to see him face the consequences of his behavior before returning to France.
All the best,

There is no place for the ugly scrawlings of this pseudo-artist scumbag and his ilk in either the urban or the rural environment. Those who condone graffiti in the cities have no right to complain when it appears in the wilderness. It’s the expression of a criminal subculture, of people who have nothing to say and are desperate to be noticed. This asshole should at least be in jail, though I am tempted to agree with Raiders that being shot would be a more suitable punishment."

Mr. André 🇸🇪 André Saraiva • Mr A • Monsieur A , by met on Mar 3, 2015 23:52:28 GMT 1, Ill start by making the following statements: 1- I do not own any art by Mr A 2- I do not support the recent actions mentioned above HOWEVER I 100% agree with @speebe, of course he's an artist regardless of what anyone may think of his character "Mr A" I for one like the character and in fact he's been around long before the street art buzz. Thanks for your reply, and certainly no offence taken. I appreciate the willingness by you and Lesson1 to entertain and engage in this particular discussion, even more so after sensing reluctance by others to do so.
Jumping on and off my high horse is pretty much the only exercise I get these days, so I hope most will excuse the indulgence.
For clarity, here's my position regarding André and his recent actions at Joshua Tree:
(i) The stunt was deplorable and egotistical. (ii) When the situation blew up in his face, André's handling of it was also disappointing. His lying and cover-up attempt were the responses of a panicky amateur caught in a tailspin, not what you'd expect from a media and PR-savvy man in his forties. (iii) I like some of André's commercial work, respect his position in street art culture, and get enjoyment from seeing his characters on the street. (iv) In isolation, the stunt would have little influence on me when considering whether to buy André's work.
Although I expressly referred to the moral flexibility or moral rigidity of individuals, my earlier questions were actually leading to a separate ethics issue — the one of double-standards.
I would posit the following:
The identity of the perpetrator determines how harshly their act of defacement in a national park will be judged.
In contemporary art market terms, André's commercial work doesn't have significant financial value, it isn't particularly sought-after, and his collector-base is quite narrow. To me, that makes the artist a soft target. An easy target.
My belief is that André is being judged more harshly for his actions because of this — at least in the public realm, including on this forum. People are more prone to openly condemn him since they lose nothing in doing so; his position is one of relative weakness. If André's work had been on everyone's 'Must Have' list, or if it featured significantly in their personal collections, the response would probably have been quite different. I believe some here would have remained silent, some would have attempted to rationalise the stunt, and any criticism expressed would (on the whole) have been more muted.
