If we're lucky. I fully expect to be enslaved inside a Chinese employment camp. My brain plugged into the internet and mining bitcoins for the nu-emperor.

I left a comment on the article.
It's a great read, he wants Banksy or Bambi to do the mural.
If he can't get Banksy, Bambi will do, in fact anything that begins with B
He also has a "Warhol style" painting.
Denis Waterman he ain't.

The year is 2065. There is an Urban Art retrospective..., by Deleted on Mar 2, 2015 12:06:47 GMT 1, The problem with rรฉtrospectives is that the cultural Hoi Poloi are in bed with the people who have a finacial interest in this stuff.
Also they are in bed with certain political and propaganda interests.
So based on who is in power in 50 years time will give us the artists that are included in the retrospective.
If todays politicians and direction we are going in is anything to go by.
Real art will be underground.

The year is 2065. There is an Urban Art retrospective..., by Deleted on Mar 2, 2015 15:50:26 GMT 1, I'm not sure who was first, Cost and Revs or the Andre the Giant has a Possee campaign, but I think there's a direct lineage between what they did and what Invader is doing
:controversial statement time: - as for Blek, as much as I love his work, I don't know if he would be there. He was pre-internet, and I don't think his work gained much notoriety outside France at the time. Yes, he was doing stencils before Banksy, but it wasn't until after Banksy came along that he gained worldwide attention. Please correct me if I'm wrong

I'd love to hear opinions from both sides. My stance isn't firm, and I can be swayed easily. I'd love to be convinced I am wrong
I just don't think a lot of people would have heard about his work if it wasn't for the renewed interest that came with the resurgence of stencil art in the 2000's

The year is 2065. There is an Urban Art retrospective..., by Matt on Mar 2, 2015 16:02:14 GMT 1, Agree on Blek. He will be one for the scholars only. If you really are interested in the street art movement, then you recognise his existence and his role.
However posterity is unlikely to be favourable to him. The art world is full of talented people who were early players, inspiration for others, but lacked the ability to take centre stage. Blek is one of those people I think

The year is 2065. There is an Urban Art retrospective..., by Deleted on Mar 2, 2015 16:22:17 GMT 1, I remember one of my teachers in graphic school had books full of stencil art, this was early 00's right around the time Banksy was getting more fame. Don't remember any names, not really into it back then. Just saying that stencil-art has been around well before Blek and Banksy were. It's a thing in itself. Same goes for a lot of other movements within this artform. It's a big mix of existing genres anyways, will be hard to make out where something became 'streetart' and what is or is not. yup, stencil art has probably gone back hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Fast forwarding a bit, I knew about Chris Stain's stencil work long before I ever heard the name Banksy, because he was the one doing stencils in my city. His work is amazing, but I don't think his work will be studied and dissected in 50 years, same as Blek.
Street art's global popularity is directly related to the growth of the internet. Blek and others were "godfathers" and "godmothers" but I think they were a bit too early for the popularity boom.
Same reason as why the train bombers of the 80's are legends, but will hold a separate place in history

The year is 2065. There is an Urban Art retrospective..., by Oski on Mar 2, 2015 16:45:38 GMT 1, Great lists and suggestions so far. I think to be included on the list, the artist will have to be (1) a significant contributor to the genre, (2) historically relevant, (3) has a unique style, (4) talent and execution, (5) and an extensive body of work on the streets and galleries.
I think the following:
Historical Examples Cave art of Lascaux Graffiti at historical sites and monuments
Pioneers Keith Harring - People may think it's a different generation, but in 50 years it's all going to be seen within the early context for the street art movement. Basquiat - Same as above for Harring. Together served as the foundation for taking art from the streets to galleries and museums. Blek le Rat - The grandfather of stencil street art. Ron English - Subversion of public ads.
The New Vanguard Banksy - The leading figure of street art. Shepard Fairey - Commercialized street art with his graphically focused style. Sticker movement with Andre the Giant. WK Interact - He was on the streets here in NYC doing some of the best work in the 90s. Large scale wheat pastes, he taught Faile how to paste and did larger scale than Shep at the time. He's also in the movie "Exit Through the Gift Shop" and referenced in many books on the history of street art. Really don't know why he doesn't get discussion here (maybe because he hasn't done much work in the UK)? Invader - Unique tile style and invasions throughout the world. Cost & Revs - Simple ubiquity and persistence.
The Second Generation Faile Bast Os Gemeos JR Swoon

Was Blek an influence on Banksy and other stencil artists, or was he just doing it before them? That's what I'd love to get a definitive answer on
