If comments like "great price" and "good price" are permitted on a sales thread — along with references to what may be overly-optimistic asking amounts by galleries — then it's important to also allow information about recent sale prices actually achieved for comparable works.

Trying to censor the latter, and just the latter, would result in forum members being misled. No one can make a wise purchase decision if they're only allowed to hear one side of the argument or half the story.

Now, blocking the free exchange of information may indeed be in the interest of an individual seller (and other owners of the same or similar work). They may be looking to take advantage of vulnerable forum members — those who are least informed or least experienced, generally being the younger collectors among us. And the more these vulnerable members are left in the dark about current market prices, the easier it is to rip them off.

So I do understand why some sellers want to keep buyers ignorant, and to silence price discussions whenever these are no longer deemed favourable.

However, this is not in the greater interest of the forum. The sharing of information here is an asset to all members. It helps to protect each one of us from possibly being misled or conned. Let's not try to quash legitimate commentary simply because it's inconvenient to some seller, who may be using the forum just to offload stock, at prices higher than on eBay and without the eBay fees.

People can sell at whatever price they want; it's their property and their choice. But for the benefit of newer members especially, we should be encouraging open discussion and transparency.

I don't have any problems with people posting current or past prices for similar pieces but please don't offend each other.
