Meaning behind Banksy prints, by londonfx on Mar 26, 2015 12:37:45 GMT 1, This may be a stupid question. Or may have been asked/answered already.
Does anyone know the meaning behind banksys prints?
I know art is subjective, and can mean hundreds of things to hundreds of people.
And it's probably been discussed on this board many a time. But is there a book or website. Which explains Banksys thought process and meaning behind each print. Or do those thought processes and meanings simply remain in Banksy head. Never to be revealed?

Meaning behind Banksy prints, by bruhbruh on Mar 30, 2015 16:53:51 GMT 1, Are there any prints in particular you are thinking of?
Most of his work is satirical, meant to make you laugh, but then think about an issue (normally government, war, religion, etc.). Here are a few reoccurring themes i notice within his prints...
Taking a ridiculous concept such as war, machines built to kill/ control humans (Happy Chopper, Flying Copper). These images and concepts are so embedded in our culture they seem normal. Taking the HC print as example, a cute hair tie is placed on it to make the concept seem as silly as it actually should be viewed.
The gentrification of subculture/ counter cultural movements into suburban mainstream culture (grannies).
Queen Victoria created strong anti-gay laws, so this print is probably either providing a comedic argument to the laws or perhaps even calling her out for being a closet lesbian and creating the harsh laws out of fear of being exposed. Who knows...
Shopping Jesus- a pretty clear hint at the commercialization of religion
Toxic Mary- I am assuming Banksy views religion as a bad thing, the cause of wars, or just misinformation which we are raising the youth on. I would agree with him on this.

Meaning behind Banksy prints, by londonfx on Mar 30, 2015 18:20:15 GMT 1, I was just generally interested to see Bankys meaning behind the prints.
I get that they are satirical and thought provoking and to a certain extent tongue in check.
It's good to see different peoples views

Meaning behind Banksy prints, by Dr Plip on Mar 30, 2015 20:37:39 GMT 1, Here's a fact. The Apache helicopter (of Happy Choppers fame) is made by Boeing.
BOW-ing? As in, hair bows.
Makes you think.
Layers on top of layers. Banksy operates on another level.

Especially if it was a "bit" on Comic Relief.
Y'know what, if I was going under the knife (in a hospital environment), there's one man (or woman) that I would trust with my body, and it'd probably be Banksy. Sure, he (or she) probably isn't currently medically trained, but we know that they are good at the research thing, and I would fully expect them to take a glance at Google before any operation.
Is there anyone else handier with a scalpel? And yes, I may wake up with a rat shaped scar (if I'm lucky), but I'd have the distinct pleasure of having the option of either leaving my body to medical science or Tate Modern.

I don't think it's any deeper than that?

I assumed it was due to the apocryphal story that QV was presented with a law to ban homosexuality, but insisted that women couldn't have sex with each other.

Meaning behind Banksy prints, by Sweetcorn on Mar 30, 2015 22:34:46 GMT 1, According to legend, lesbianism was never made illegal in Britain because, when Queen Victoria, pictured, was shown the proposed legislation, she refused to sign it, as she wouldn't believe that lesbians existed. "Women do not do such things," she is reported to have said. Most historians now agree that the story is untrue.
In other versions of the tale, ministers deleted all references to women in the legislation, because they couldn't think of a way of explaining matters to the dear old queen.
However, the idea Victoria refused to sign MP Henry Labouchere's amendment to the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885, until it had been de-lesbianised, is easily dealt with: the monarch in the late 19th century did not have the power to overrule parliament

Meaning behind Banksy prints, by bruhbruh on Mar 30, 2015 23:15:37 GMT 1, Taking a ridiculous concept such as war, machines built to kill/ control humans (Happy Chopper, Flying Copper). These images and concepts are so embedded in our culture they seem normal. Taking the HC print as example, a cute hair tie is placed on it to make the concept seem as silly as it actually should be viewed. Interested in others interpretation of Flying Copper in particular. Anyone get something from it different than the above noted theme? ^

Not friendly. No angel.
