What is the best way to keep updated on contemporary art?, by Deleted on May 1, 2015 11:34:36 GMT 1, Buy what you like and what you can afford.
Ignore articles about how to buy art.
www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2010/oct/13/learn-how-to-collect-art
Ignore art investment advisers and curators.
Saatchi Online has a lot of great art but their picks and advice about up and coming artists gives me the feeling there is a certain bias for certain reasons.
Buy originals and follow artists that you like.
Get yourself invited to openings and do a bit of schmoozing.
Wear a suit and lie a lot. Pretend you are related to or friends with a major player in Hollywood. You'll be surprised how many doors that opens)
Have fun and do not take any of the pretentious art farty clique seriously.
Visit major salerooms and talk down to the staff.

What is the best way to keep updated on contemporary art?, by Deleted on May 1, 2015 12:32:46 GMT 1, A lot of collectors in the past bought direct from the artists.
Mainly for low prices, kept the art for a long time because they liked it and had in their collections some major piรจces.
Don't be afraid of contacting artists direct and buying direct.

Social meeja seems to be the way forward now
I've seen many a member brown-nosing artists, whose work you can still find in the for sale section

What is the best way to keep updated on contemporary art?, by Deleted on May 2, 2015 12:29:23 GMT 1, A collector of art is very different to an investor in art.
I know that many people like to think they are a bit of both but I think it is better to be one or the other.

What is the best way to keep updated on contemporary art?, by Deleted on May 2, 2015 13:25:48 GMT 1, What is the difference @elviswarhol?
Just my view is it's easier in the long run.
Investing in art is having a feel for or predicting trends and also following artists that have potential for future auction sales etc.
Or artists that are very very very old and buying up their art because once they have popped their clogs, there is a chance that prices will rise.
It has happened with quite a few where dealers bought up the art and then rigged a few auction sales to push the prices up.
Collectors buy what they like, follow some artists and do not pay high prices and collectors with a keen eye often never regret what they have collected.
I think when people try to be both at the same time they end up regretting some purchases.
