Jeff Gillette ๐บ๐ธ Dismal Exhibitions โข Art For Sale, by Daniel Silk on Aug 1, 2016 21:19:26 GMT 1, Looking at Jeff Gillette's work and his painting style, has anyone wondered if he was actually the painter of some of Banksy's work in the past? Such as the very detailed paintings at the Bristol Museum show. I wonder if some of Banksy's work over the years was produced Damien Hirst style with a studio of artists with different skills, and the Dismaland show was Banksy giving those artists now the opportunity to go under their own names. Just an idea
I mean Ben Eine was involved in the creation of much of the early Banksy work, especially the prints, so it's not far fetched to think Banksy has other artists now helping in the production of his art.

Jeff Gillette ๐บ๐ธ Dismal Exhibitions โข Art For Sale, by sugarartjp on Aug 2, 2016 9:31:54 GMT 1, I am a big fan of Jeff Gillette I have been following him for a quite long time. I am sure he is not trying to cash in on Dismaland because this is just what he has been doing for over 20years and he does not care about it a tiny bit, he is not that shallow chap like others.
I'd rather say Banksy jumped on his boat that he had been sailing for about 20 yrs and left some great things there and jumped out and Jeff Gillette keeps going the way it has been since the beginning.
I hope I will get a hold of a copy this time as this is one of my favourite images by him.
@danielsilk That might be the case and that would be great, wouldn't it?

Jeff Gillette ๐บ๐ธ Dismal Exhibitions โข Art For Sale, by lha on Aug 2, 2016 19:38:35 GMT 1, For me, Jeff's a wonderful painter, to which his original pieces bear testimony. I don't think he's trying to cash in on Dismaland, he's doing his thing and adding elements of his experience of Dismaland to what he's been painting for a long time No coincidence that his image was chosen for the show poster. A fair bit of the work at Dismal was already in private hands or galleries, Jeff painted his five pieces specifically for the show and him and his wife made all the ears that the staff wore. I'm not alluding to any connection between Jeff and Banksy, there isn't one, but Banksy obviously saw fit to use some of Jeff's talent as an integral part of the show. The way I see it is that Jeff is giving a nod back to Banksy through some of his work and using elements/his experience of Dismaland where he sees fit in much the same way as Banksy drew on Jeff's talents (and may others) to create an incredible show

Pretty obvious association with Banksy and Dismaland gets Jeff more eyes on, recognition and open doors, so bottom line he is continuing to use it. It is what it is. If his work got an acceptable amount of publicity and demand on it's own he's have moved away from the Dismaland work long ago as anyone can see how it looks to keep hanging on so to speak.
I remember last year at Basel Miami there was a booth that had a large selection of his originals on display and the "Mini Rat" piece was the only one that sold (and the only one I took a photo of). It actually sold immediately at the VIP evening preview and the rest of the works remained unsold at least until the last day I was there. I'm sure this is no surprise to anyone but shows the power of the association and why he is still using it, or at least why most will think he is.

What's an 'acceptable amount of publicity'? That will vary from artist to artist. Is Paco releasing his two prints of works that were at Dismaland 'Once Upon a Time' only the other week cheap PR and 'hanging on' in the same way a year down the line? Neither of Pacos prints released of the work from Dismal have sold out. That's not a criticism, I'm a fan of Pacos work. Personally,, I don't see it as 'cashing in'

Pomet is releasing totally original works of his. No Dismaland imagery and no Banksy references whatsoever. Hard to compare the two.

Paco released two prints that were both from works shown at Dismaland, he has a fairly vast body of work, so not that difficult to compare the two overall. Jeff has released prints with no Dismaland reference as well as a version of the Ferris Wheel piece from the show. Banksy owns the original of 'Once Upon a Time' as mentioned on the Arrested Motion feature on the print release and mentioned here. Wonder if he owns any of Jeff's pieces

Jeff Gillette ๐บ๐ธ Dismal Exhibitions โข Art For Sale, by Schrรถdinger's Chat on Aug 3, 2016 5:52:48 GMT 1, From what I understand Jeff did Dismayland a long time before Banksy's Dismaland but prior to Dismaland I don't think Jeff had a massive UK following (happy to be corrected on this). So I think it definitely boosted his career. It also seems that since Dismaland he has knocked out similar themed prints at a rate of one every 2/3 months - it's too much.
I think the fact that this print release even states that it is to mark the one year anniversary of Dismaland opening and includes a "nod to Banksy" suggest that he may still be trying to milk that particular avenue/audience.
I'd just like to add that I really liked Jeff's work at Dismaland, it was new to me and the canvases looked amazing in the flesh. I think the prints have mainly been weak and I think the size of the image is generally too small to have the impact of the canvases.

Jeff Gillette ๐บ๐ธ Dismal Exhibitions โข Art For Sale, by Schrรถdinger's Chat on Aug 3, 2016 6:10:23 GMT 1, Just read this article from June: www.standard.co.uk/goingout/arts/jeff-gillette-the-man-who-inspired-banksy-a3279021.html
The article seems to suggest that Banksy both imitates and inspires Jeff - so I guess we are all correct. However Banksy is of course much more than a one trick pony.
It also says Jeff and his wife designed the Dismaland ears - fact.
