Good luck with the sale Dr Jimmy is a good chap to deal with. (Even if he does get a bit of stick on the forum)
I agree with what you say about higher end pieces.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by bullysonzx10r on Apr 26, 2014 2:34:45 GMT 1, If it's the version of 85, the last I've seen sold was for $25K (US) from a Gallery. Several are available here in the states for $35K, again, at galleries. There is a private sale through Phillips of this piece on the 28th with an estimate of $25K-$35K.
Do note that if this is the same as what I'm referring to, it was pressed in 2001, and has never been touched by Basquiat, unlike some litho's that have hand finishing.
Regardless, this is an AMAZING piece, on of my favorite pieces ever, and if I had the $25K in hand, I'd be making a serious cash offer.

Basquiatโs work will be on display at the uptown Acquavella Gallery for your consumption courtesy of Herbert and Lenore Schorr; former friends, collectors, and supporters of the artist. The collection of previously unseen work will include 22 pieces on paper and two paintings from their personal collection.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by dreadnatty on May 6, 2014 18:34:07 GMT 1, Rare Basquiat Drawings Being Shown at Upper East Side Gallery www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20140501/upper-east-side/rare-basquiat-drawings-being-shown-at-upper-east-side-gallery/
UPPER EAST SIDE โ A new exhibit featuring artist Jean-Michel Basquiat will present some of the artistโs lesser-known works.
Acquavella Galleries on East 79th Street will host an exhibit of Basquiatโs drawings, including some of his earliest works. The exhibit runs from May 1 to June 13 and includes 22 drawings and two paintings, all from the collection of Herbert and Lenore Schorr.
The Schorrs were some of Basquiatโs earliest supporters. They began collecting his pieces in 1981, before the artistโs first solo New York exhibition. In addition to acquiring several paintings that are now recognized as some of Basquiatโs most important works, the Schorrs also sought out the artistโs drawings, something that set them apart from many early collectors according to the exhibitโs curator.
โThe Schorrs astutely understood that working on paper was equally central to his practice as painting on canvas,โ exhibit curator Fred Hoffman said in a statement. โTheir collection demonstrates both the focus and ambition that the artist invested in the medium of drawing.โ
Drawing was an essential part of Basquiatโs output. From 1980 to 1988, during his prime years, Basquiat created almost 1,000 drawings, according to the gallery. Like his paintings, many of his drawings challenge flawed power structures and fundamental failings in society such as racism and poverty.
Basquiat's career started in obscurity, then rose to meteoric heights before his death.
โWe had so much confidence in him from the beginning and couldnโt understand why other people couldnโt see it,โ Lenore Schorr said in a statment. โA wonderful exhibition that he did at Fun Gallery in 1983 didnโt receive a single review and we were the only ones to buy a painting.โ
By the mid-80s Basquiatโs career had taken off and he was showing his painting at international galleries and museums. His career was cut short when he died in 1988 of a heroin overdose. He was 27 at the time.
In 2005, the Brooklyn Museum presented a retrospective of Basquiatโs work, which was co-curated by Hoffman.
The Acquavella exhibit marks the first time that works from the Schorrs collection will be on display. Many of the pieces have never before been seen by the public.

Same here I knew a little about his work and read he was roughing it in New York, a good insight into the whole scene in New York and that he was from a middle class family and so well read. His 'mates' taking work and auctioning it. Good honest interviews from him also.
It run through the heroin abuse obviously but he must have been constantly doing lots of amphetimines to produce that amount of work with all the partying he did.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by dreadnatty on Oct 29, 2014 2:53:37 GMT 1, RARE BASQUIAT NOTEBOOKS COMING TO BROOKLYN MUSEUM By Rhett Jones October 27, 2014 - 10:29AM Beloved late New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, will have a new exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum this spring, featuring rarely seen notebooks.
The museum will be displaying 160 unbound notebook pages and 30 related paintings, drawings and mixed media works, all of which come from private collections and Basquiatโs estate.
The famous neo-expressionist painter first came to attention on the streets of NYC under his graffiti-name SAMOยฉ. After dying far too early at the age of 27, heโs been the art world equivalent of Kurt Cobain, becoming something of a martyr and inspiration for films and t-shirts. In recent years, rare items involving the artist have become highly sought after. His paintings go for as much as $27 million.
If youโve only known his work through what he mightโve called, โSAMOยฉ โฆ 4 MASS MEDIA MINDWASH,โ this exhibition should be a nice way to go straight to the man himself. (Photo: Laser Burners)

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by dreadnatty on Nov 8, 2014 5:34:21 GMT 1, BASQUIAT AND BAYOU IN NEW ORLEANS
www.widewalls.ch/basquiat-and-bayou-in-new-orleans/
With a mission to support the local arts community, New Orleans founded an art festival entitled Prospect featuring different programs, exhibitions and projects across the city. This year, Prospect.3: Notes for Now opened on October 25th and will last thirteen weeks. During this period, the New Orleans art community will showcase approximately 70 contemporary art events. Organized by artists, art organizations, co-ops, curators and advocates, P.3+ will feature the work of approximately 300 emerging and established New Orleans and regional artists. The artists were selected by Franklin Sirmans, the curator of contemporary art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Prospect.3 also includes several other popup exhibits that were not selected by Sirmans. These scattered exhibitions are called P.3+ or satellite exhibits. One of the must-see shows this year is the spectacular Basquiat and the Bayou exhibition featuring a suite of nine of Jean-Michel Basquiatโs artworks based on Southern themes that has been assembled for the first time ever on the Ogden Museum of Southern Artโs fifth floor.
Strong Connection to the South
The impact that Jean-Michel Basquait had on the contemporary art is absolutely amazing especially considering the fact that he was only 27 when he passed away. Starting on the streets of New York in the 70s, he soon became a graffiti legend and shortly after, Basquiat climbed to the highest rungs of the rarified Manhattan art world, eventually even collaborating on paintings with pop legend Andy Warhol. Franklin Sirmans, the artistic director of Prospect.3, studied Basquiat for years. As he says: โBasquiat is not only one of the most important figures in contemporary art of America, but one of the pioneers of what we now call the hip-hop culture.โ Other interests in Basquiatโs work were connected to his strong relationship to the South. Over the course of his short but spectacular career, the artist created a body of work that often addresses the deep psychological and spiritual terrain of America, in its broadest sense.
On View Until January 2015
The selection of works presented at the Ogden Museum of Art as a part of the Basquiat and the Bayou show constitutes a meditation on the powerful symbolic presence of the Mississippi River and its delta in the work of this iconic artist, as a physical and cultural conduit for Africans in the New World. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue published by DelMonico/Prestel. Basquiat and the Bayou will be on view, along with all the other shows in Prospect.3 until January 25, 2015.
