Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Poster Bob on Oct 21, 2015 15:53:22 GMT 1, Really? This forum once again speculates on the ridiculous price of a print, the price of which has yet to be revealed, and it's spot on? Really? Is this forum (and its members) THAT knowledgeable? Yes, I am at least.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Happy Shopper on Oct 21, 2015 15:54:53 GMT 1, I think this just shows all that is worst in the art market. Value is only what someone is willing to pay, with the hope that it will be worth more later. It's like more like share dealing than liking art.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Hairbland on Oct 21, 2015 17:20:18 GMT 1, Even if the price is half of what's been talked about here, it's still ridiculous! The size, material, and number of screens, is all just there to bamboozle people into thinking this has some artistic merit and value... T-shirts are screen printed too. This feels more like a "poster" to me than a signed Faile litho! Pace is a long established high end brand in the art world, linked to many collectors and galleries. In addition to their high end prints I've seen some spectacular shows of theirs, I remember once seeing a row of framed Brice Mardens on the floor leaning against something.
They can easily place this with wealthy clients who have the money to afford an apartment that can easily fit a work such as this, without the price being given a second thought.
I'm not sure of the long term value, as to me these estate things smack of Franklin Mint collector's item type projects, but then I'm not a wealthy client with a P.T.Barnum achilles heel.
Basquiat still great and still dead otherwise.

I saw the piece in the flesh today and it is absolutely spectacular. The paper is thick and the image jumps out at you. 84 inches of pure raw art !!!!!

I myself found this bit of information absolutely shocking. When Jamie Martin, one of the world's top forensic art analysts, was interviewed by 60 minutes, he said about 98% of all the pieces that come past him are fakes! Even more insane is in almost every case the gallery or owner tosses the news aside and keeps the piece in circulation. One can only imagine the money being paid for verified fakes that are purposely kept on the market.

Now that's what art should be about. If you like the look of it, buy it, enjoy it.

I think it's a pretty poor choice, not close to his best or most interesting work. Is it a digital copy of an existing canvas or sketch ? can't imagine he would have ever consented to something like this being produced in his name. Father's still warm in his grave and Pace are all over the sisters to make a killing. Shows the absolute worst side of the "industry" IMO. Want to see Basquiat, go to a museum, see a real one, buy a book or hit up allposters for a $100 litho.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Wearology on Oct 21, 2015 19:33:31 GMT 1, I have no desire to get into a slagging match with anyone about this release. My only goal was to give the forum an update on what was happening leading up to the release on line and what the art actually looked like in the flesh. Besides that everyone can have their opinion on the image and price. I am certainly no Basquiat expert or defender of greedy family members looking to whore out their deceased fathers genius.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Howard Johnson on Oct 21, 2015 19:55:00 GMT 1, Can someone familiar with Basquiat's career please explain how Pace is getting away with this price point? I get the whole "clientele with more money then sense" argument, but 50k is an incredible amount of money for a screen print no matter how wealthy you are. Also, the price seems insane when compared to the Warhol market, in which there are a ton of iconic works to be had for 50k or less. I just can't imagine someone would forgo a classic SIGNED Warhol or Lichtenstein screen print for this one. Did Basquiat not produce any multiples during his lifetime? I may be comparing apples to oranges as I am admittedly unfamiliar with Basquiat's career.

At least the estate didn't spin some story of how Basquiat intended on releasing this image before his death as was done with the Haring Icons.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Mirus Gallery Poesia on Oct 21, 2015 21:27:03 GMT 1, Its Ironic to listen to all the griping in here about this print, Im with wearology it is what it is. Its a print from a reputable printer with great attention to detail on printing, Its a print release for people with more money than most of us. That doesnt make it a shiet release or unethical in any way, I am sure the celebrity wealthy who drop basquiats name on the regular or chic hotels would love to own something this large without paying millions. I wouldnt mind owning a print of this scale that was printed by this printer and related to his actual estate. Value wise we could argue all day, but the reality is that there is a market for everything as you can see that it sold out.
If you want to buy a 50 dollar reproduction then by all means, or go support a emerging artist and drop 200 on another edition of 100 in 12 colorways as is the status quo around here at times. Im happy to see Rammellzee being referenced in this release and maybe not my favorite image its relevant in many ways to the friendships Basquiat kept with his peers. To me its good to see. As far as being appaled by this release its just another day in the artworld, Im more appalled to see some of the releases I see daily in here but thats another story. I can appreciate this edition in many aspects even if I wouldnt be able to buy one or wanted to buy one.
Its Ironic to listen to all the griping in here about this print, Im with wearology it is what it is.
