Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by toshspice on Oct 21, 2015 21:28:19 GMT 1, I had always been told that icons was in production when Haring passed away, hence the lack of signature. That it was not some shady deal by the estate. I was referring to the estate's backstory that Haring "had intended to release" the icon series shortly before his death. Anyway moving on... Not a fan myself but was a nice sized OG at the new Broad when I visited last week.
I love this piece.

Also based on the general rule of releases 50K x 60 = 3Mil which would be the cost of the original painting. Factor in that this is posthumous well that is subjective on the value. But if sold out seems to be on the mark, and not sure how many will be flipping or end on ebay, I would guess not too many.

I think that most, if not all of these comments are being made without an understanding of their situation with the IRS. Not exactly sure where your facts are coming from but the basquiat estate is absolutely not in debt but in an ongoing case with the IRS over over a blockage discount on the assets when they were transferred from the recently deceased mother and father. The valuation for taxation is in debate here but the overall estate is worth hundreds of millions. They are still in possession of over 1300 original paintings and drawings. His "Dustheads" painting alone going for $48 million back in 2013 just before the IRS audit. The amount being disputed with the IRS is currently about $12 million and while the penalties and interest mount over time the estate is coming out way ahead with the constant appreciation of their holdings. Hard to shed a tear here.

I really feel the board in general takes an eat the rich attitude towards any financial matters but people should really take a look in the mirror here in terms of their own incomes.

ok, got my mirrorโฆ am looking in it but can't see any income? Someone has written 'You skint bastard' in the dust on it tho. You must have one of those magic income mirrors, lucky git.
Anyways, Basquiat's deadโฆ no he really is, so this ain't a Basquiat print it's a knock off cover version done to grab rich people's money because they buy what they're told. And if some else mentions 'placing art' in someones collection I'm gonna artfully place some vomit on my shoes!
Never mind, I've got to go, need to grab me a rich person for dinner tonight. Hmmm what to go for, royalty, trustafarian or a good old equity broker?

The estate tax serves a purpose. So that we don't have a permanent class of wealthy people who contribute nothing society and a permanent class of working poor. It used to do a better job at that. But one thing about politicians is they can always be bought. So the tax has been watered down tremendously over the years.

Edit: and I understand that this argument can also be made regarding social safety nets, but I know way more people receiving public help that are doing positive things with there lives than my friends who are trust funders or live off of inheritance.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Mirus Gallery Poesia on Oct 22, 2015 20:06:40 GMT 1, If we are in this Forum I think we can safely say that we are in the privilege of being able to buy art even if we are broke after, or Rich enough to not have it effect us. The point being we have a privileged point of view to someone who cant afford a 100 dollar print. Because basquiat buyers can buy 50K print and the estate is making money we all cry foul? Look at where you are, being able to afford to collect art and look at someone else starving or in a situation where Art is the last thing on their mind. Its all perspective so I dont get why some people will act as if their stance is not as priviliged in the world view as the Basquiat estate.
Just enjoy the Art its another print drop that could be good or bad. The value is more and the artist is dead which is a valid argument, but arguing about economics and who can make money or should make money takes a world perspective not just one from where you stand.

Original print release forthcoming. Pre-orders available starting at $1.5 million. Edition of 500. I doubt he will be putting them out, since he was murdered almost 11 years ago.
