This is the big risk with these now... they could release new prints every six months for many years to come so long term the value of these After prints could plummet

love the detail of the new print - anyone have an image of the full piece or know what it's called?

I've owned a couple posters by him over the years and find it much more appealing to purchase something that the artist designed/published then something "approved by the estate." There are a couple really good looking pieces out there if you don't mind not having a signed/numbered work.

www.paceprints.com/news/new-release-estate-jean-michel-basquiat-0
The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat is pleased to announce the release of a new 24-color Basquiat screenprint titled Flexible (1984/2016), published by Flatiron Editions. The edition of 85 will be available exclusively through Pace Prints starting on June 7, 2016 at 11:00am EDT.
Flexible, based on a panel painting created in Basquiatโs Venice, California studio in 1984, portrays the griotโa storyteller, entertainer, and purveyor of oral history from West African culture. Referencing the artistโs exploration of and struggle with the role of artist-as-everyman, his interest in imagery from earlier cultures, an affinity for historical and contemporary black figures and an x-ray view into internal organs, Flexible conveys an examination of identity. Basquiatโs signature broad, aggressive brush strokes and flat areas of color both reveal and conceal previous layers of paint and imagery, framing one of the artistโs most arresting and iconic figures.
The posthumous release is stamped and signed by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, the artistโs sisters and administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Flexible (1984/2016) will be available at Pace Prints Gallery, 521 West 26th Street, New York, NY and via email starting at 11:00am on June 7, 2016. Priority will be given to in-person requests. For remote requests, please email basquiat@paceprints.com starting at 11:00:00am EDT with your name, billing address and telephone number. Requests will be confirmed via phone in the order in which the emails are received. Emails with a timestamp before 11:00:00am EDT on June 7 will not be honored. The edition will be released at $40,000 USD with tiered pricing. A non-refundable deposit of $5,000 USD is required to secure the purchase and payment must be made in full by July 29, 2016. Packing, framing and shipping not included.
Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 22, 1960. He began his career making street art composed of enigmatic writings on buildings and walls in downtown Manhattan in the late 1970s. His work quickly rose to the spotlight, and by the early 1980s he gained the attention and acclaim of galleries and museums internationally. In what is often classified as a neoexpressionist style, Basquiat drew on social and political themes like systematic racism, identity politics and commodity culture. The artist died at the age of 27 on August 12, 1988 in his studio on Great Jones Street in New York City. Major exhibitions include โJean- Michel Basquiat: Paintings 1981โ1984,โ Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (1984; traveled to Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, through 1985); Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover (1987, 1989); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1993; traveled to Menil Collection, Houston; Des Moines Art Center, Iowa; and Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, Alabama, through 1994); โBasquiat,โ Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York (2005; traveled to Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, through 2006); and Fondation Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland (2010; traveled to Musรฉe dโart moderne de la ville de Paris); and โNow is the Timeโ at the Art Gallery of Ontario (2015; traveled to the Guggenheim Bilbao in 2015). A major exhibition of his work is scheduled for 2017 at the Barbican Centre in London.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Inknart on Jun 2, 2016 17:57:00 GMT 1, I'm so curious as to why anyone would spend $40,000+ for a re printing of a piece from a deceased artist? It just feels like it's in such poor taste. I'm genuinely curious as to what other artists this is done for and do they hold value at all? It's basically a print with no signature from a deceased artist for 40K!? Seems like a glorified poster.

Agreed, I'm curious as well. Is this a new trend? The Francis Bacon estate did it last year as well, which were more reasonably priced but still quite high for After prints... where will the estates draw the line?

If I'm not mistaken I think 90% of Basquiat multiples were released after his death. I think he may have done one or two very small editions during his career but they are kinda weird anatomy images and not in the bight bold style he's known for. My guess is that collectors came to terms with the fact that if you wanted a nice Basquiat piece and didn't have 57 Million laying around, it is going to be an estate edition.
For the record, I don't knock this release one bit. Theres clearly a market for these prints, and if the artist could weigh in on the debate I'm willing to bet he'd prefer to support his family financially over the other objections raised in this thread.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Howard Johnson on Jun 2, 2016 18:43:12 GMT 1, I'll also add (because I seem to be avoiding work at all costs today) that these estate editions are really only viable for artists with tragically short careers. The Haring and Basquiat estates were able to release collectable editions because there just isn't enough of these artists work out there to satisfy the needs of collectors. Accordingly, don't expect an influx of new Warhols any time soon.
The Lichtenstein estate tried this move with an absolutely stunnting edition of one of his best brushstroke images. That piece can be had for less then $500 today because Lichtenstein released so many prints and posters that collectors were unwilling to pay a premium for an estate edition when there are so many others to choose from.
