Investing, by nik on Dec 13, 2015 18:02:29 GMT 1, Beer... I have a friend who invests in beer, living in Belgium I guess it's more of a habit than for financial gain. Although some beers because they're limited due to hop harvests can make up to 200% instant mark up. Especially now the US is going through a craft beer craze. I quite often buy what is considered the best beer in the world (it's not in my opinion, but very difficult to get) for 2โฌ a bottle and it can sell outside Belgium for much, much more. I think there's investment opportunities in lots of different things. I'm curious...what do you think is the best beer?? Always keen to try a new one if I haven't Tried the Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc? My favourite

Investing, by gilsteph on Dec 17, 2015 19:40:19 GMT 1, I have. It's a nice one. For blonde I would recommend westvleteren 6 - it's not so easy to get but if you visit the monastery in Belgium the cafe opposite has it on draft. It's an excellent beer. The 12 is considered on of the best in the world but it's pretty heavy for me. For a darker beer I like orval - fairly common but I like it. All very subjective. If you want to try any from Belgium let me know. I'm there quite a lot and can pick stuff up. Thanks! Heading to Amsterdam soon and they have a shop that sells it Not as good as the draught Im sure but still worth a try!

Investing, by docean on Dec 18, 2015 0:44:17 GMT 1, I work as a mortgage backed security trader so I'm pretty tired of the markets by the time I do individual investments.
Other than art I've made real estate investments. Wine & liquor markets are fickle...and there's too much room for fraud. Check out "The Billionaire's Vinegar" it's all about the fine wine market being riddled with fakes.
Guitars can be an ok investment, I've made money off of them but I think whatever you put your money into (and this has been mentioned before) it really just boils down to being very knowledgeable in that area. You can make money in just about anything if you know more than everyone else.

Investing, by docean on Dec 20, 2015 17:41:15 GMT 1, the problem with that is scale. It's not worth my time to buy $15 bottles to sell for $30...sure the return % is high but how many bottles of beer could I really sell? I'd rather buy something for $10k and sell for $11k than 1000 things for $10/each and sell for $20/each.
I realize that was way over-complicated, but long story short I don't see the value in beer after you factor in time, effort, and scale. I'd rather just drink em haha

Quite a clever concept really (on his part), selling shares in historical documents. With his first he raised enough capitol to take on anything.

Investing, by Matt on Mar 22, 2016 9:59:53 GMT 1, Reminds me of that Gallery on Shoreditch that offered the same shareholder system.
You could buy share of modern / urban art pieces, and cash in when the gallery sold the piece.
The only thing was that the pieces were so overvalued I can't see how anyone but the gallery would make money.
They had Katrin Fridriks Blue Reflected , valued at 4000 when it had been released for 1600 a few months earlier. Assuming shares were at 400 (i seem to recall they were), the first 4 shareholders payed for the piece and the rest was free money for the gallery.
Anyone remember this gallery ? Do they still exist ?

For some reason France has a reputation for corruption and corrupt businessmen. I know it can happen in any country where opportunists prey on the gullible.
Manuscripts can be bought at fair prices but it seems that a certain clique want to control the market as they control other markets in art etc.

Personally I cannot see any benefit in getting involved in this type of investment.
First rule of investing make sure you have the name address phone number of the person asking for your money and where to find them should they change the rules down the line.

Gallery was quite nice, 2 floors, some cool pieces, but the concept is non-sense for the shareholders given the valuation is set regardless of any market price.

If for investment purposes as per the title of the thread then go and buy a LIITA or a LN or a LR and you will make a few quid ! If you want a watch as an investment then buy big eg Patek Phillipe or Jaeger lecoutre etc. I have been buying low end watches new and used, typically Frank Muller, Rolex, Omega, Chopard, IWC, Ulysse Nardin in the region of ยฃ2-ยฃ8k off and on for years and lost a shed load of cash on most of them but I bought them because i liked them at that point in time, got bored with them and moved them on.
If you want to collect various styles of watches then you'd do a lot worse than buy a couple of Christopher Wards, great pieces for the money and a massive range to choose from. In the last year or so i have veered away from the bigger names and bought a few from them and the quality is excellent.
I dont use any watch forums but Chrono24 is pretty good for picking up a good deal but plenty of pirates on their so b careful when buying or selling.
