That could be true, but will his messages be as relevant and will people see him as out of touch?
from wiki,
"Some have criticized the "obviousness" of Banksy's work, and accused it of being "anarchy-lite" geared towards a middle class "hipster" audience." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banksy

I think today his messages suit a socialist agenda while his art appeals to capitalists.

established by who and where?
The street art movement is mainly "murals on walls" called "street art." Legal murals, festivals etc etc all very slickly executed and planned out graphic design style.
Even Banksy's Calais stencil was done legally and aiding the French agenda to get the UK to accept the illegal immigrants under the pseudonym, refugees.

I don't get it, it's not 'awesome' in any sense. When I look at one of my many Miss Bugs on my walls, there is no comparison, Banksy is not top notch! #truth
But I dare you to debate. The only reason you would is to protect your investment. His work is VERY mediocre.
when it comes to talent and composition, there are many artist we discuss on this very forum that outshines the Mr. b. Ian F. Paul Insect Miss Bugs. Conor Harrington. Etc....

What makes people like Banksy works so much, by saucyjack on Dec 22, 2015 1:54:15 GMT 1, Maybe in the short term. Established by the mainstream media outlets around the world.
I mean to say the street artists who've moved more toward creating works meant to be displayed in private collections, rather than in the streets.
Please don't get me started on the large (or small), sanctioned/commissioned works that are so en vogue these days. I view them the same way I view large billboard advertisements.

The mainstream media seems to be made up of op ed pieces, propaganda, and advertorials.
Having media contacts helps.
The many urban art blogs and mainstream media look to me like they are fed the exact same article to reproduce as far and wide as possible.
Hirst prices seemed to have gone down and I don't know today what type of auction results they would achieve.
I get the feeling Banksy prices have hit a ceiling too.
I agree about careful branding and keeping the name in the media as opposed to the art.

What makes people like Banksy works so much, by saucyjack on Dec 22, 2015 2:19:51 GMT 1, Exactly.
Like you mentioned before, a socialist agenda sold to rich capitalists. The same applies to the mainstream media, the kind capitalists still read or watch on TV. I suspect very few people who pay millions of dollars for art read street art blogs online, they are probably a bit too busy. For better or worse, the MSM gives legitimacy to an artist. The Banksy brand knows this. That's why you can read so many articles about him there. They usually start with something like this:
"The anonymous British street artist Banksy, whose works sell for millions at auction..."

What makes people like Banksy works so much, by andysh on Dec 22, 2015 2:37:03 GMT 1, I totally agree. But still there are a few cases worst than Banksy. If you concentrate on art and only on art, Banksy has a lot. Not for the visuals, but for his history and concepts. But when you think about MrBrainwash or Alec Monopoly, they also make millions and are a complete bullsh*t. Zero talent, zero history, just marketing.

Banksy has inspired a lot of artists, not just with their watered down sarcastic stencils, but also with their watered down marketing.

However, Bansky was not the only one who painted the gaza wall, I don't think that's what makes him special to be honest.
An example of a street art piece on the gaza wall: - www.facebook.com/MisterDheo/photos/a.154148394668180.39410.154143911335295/720731621343185/?type=3&theater
Isn't this technically way over what Banksy did in gaza? doesn't this take longer? Speaking of Harrington, if you put him next to Banksy is like comparing gold to sand, even though I completely understand your point.

What makes people like Banksy works so much, by Poly Mindset on Dec 22, 2015 4:00:38 GMT 1, To me it's not just his artwork but to me, it's his balls that make him worthy of the acclaim that he receives. Though the images he creates have ball within themselves. What I truly appreciate is the stories of him sneaking into museums and hanging his art in existing exhibits. Nobody was doing that and I haven't heard of anyone since.I know this is not what makes his work so valuable but it is one of the reasons I like Banksy so much. Gotta admire him for his wonderful talents, all of them.

What makes people like Banksy works so much, by bejwee77 on Dec 22, 2015 5:32:00 GMT 1, I think if you're focused exclusively on quality or marketing or some formula, you're missing the point.
Lots of musicians are terrible at their art in a classical sense, or use a simplistic formula, but are immensely popular. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich may not be culinary genius, but you're still going to find a ton of people that say it's great.
All that matters is that it resonates. For me, that's true of Banksy because I like the messaging of his art (perceived), and the lore behind the persona. And that he made it...he started where he started and is now on top, doing whatever he wants for a living. I can appreciate a winner.
I'm sure there are people for whom the appreciation is fabricated through wanting to be cool or being a lemming, but there are a ton of things that get marketed brilliantly, are of exceptional quality, that aren't so popular.

We'll take the recent Banksy print given to the Dismaland employees. If you took away the brand name, what would you have left?

Otto, I do take issue with what you say. With Banksy, it's not about the quality of the execution. I do think his works are brilliantly executed. But he certainly isn't the very best stencil artist out there. The quality of his works are in the message, the humour, the daring, and the scale of his ventures. I'm sick of hearing the word brand attributed to this artist. And if you honestly think that I am debating with you to protect an investment, you are wrong. I really don't think sweeping generalisations are helpful. No doubt whatsoever that there are people on here that are motivated by money and greed. But there are others who are not. I can think of people on here who have been quite open about their lack of funds to buy banksy pieces, but who love banksy's work with a passion.
Edit - Otto, I have just reread this, and it sounds quite aggressive. Not my intention at all. Sometimes happens when trying to have a conversation in writing. Read it in a calm voice! ;-)

As much as I enjoy Banksy art works, I enjoy the marketing and branding at work just as much. We'll take the recent Banksy print given to the Dismaland employees. If you took away the brand name, what would you have left?
What was it, Banksy said about advertising?
Banksys art and slogans etc are the sort of stuff that work well on t shirts and novelty birthday cards.
Made on the street they made a lot of people smile.
All very marketable.
Having a PR team to market Banksy and get some lines in the press costs money.
Employing scaffolders and others to help or enable stencils to be made on walls costs money too.
Blek did it all on his own with messages which are socially as strong.
The graffiti artist or tagger who wrote "f**k the police" makes as strong a political point as Banksy ever did.
The two sides to Banksy is the money making side.
and the money making side
Didn't Lazarides say that Banksy said he " was tired of eating cabbage " just before they parted ?
The Dismaland event, organised by Banksy just a mini Glastonbury and a dig at Disney.
Clever marketing and PR, link Banksy name to Disney and get column inches.
Same with the Steve Jobs stencil.
Link Banksy name to Steve Jobs and Apple brand and get column inches.
Raising awareness about issues that we are all aware of is great but just like the Soviet propaganda art it can be misleading.
How many people on this forum are biased because they are connected or make money from promoting the brand Banksy?
Of course they won't upset the apple cart.
Theer are artists like Pejac who raise awareness with strong images.
Banksy appeals to the English market and English speaking.
Quite a few stencils done by other artists have been attributed to Banksy and the non train spotters go along with that.

What makes people like Banksy works so much, by Deleted on Dec 22, 2015 11:54:35 GMT 1, Even Banksy's Calais stencil was done legally and aiding the French agenda to get the UK to accept the illegal immigrants under the pseudonym, refugees. 'Legally' ?........really?...... On another note (prob. b flat) The Sex Pistols were hardly The Halle Orchestra, so what if the Artist is crap at feet? it's as much about the messenger as it is about the message in his case, the message is quite simple...he is the best at what he does......... (what is it he does again?). Yes really.
That's why the local council decides to spend money covering the stencil to protect it.
Banksy another pawn in the game maybe ?
