street-art was nothing in Paris then apart Miss Tick that the stencils ( sic ) were recognizable because the graffk of the name and the faces... Personally, il lived near Blek area and o never saw one , or maybe I did not care. The only stencils or graffitis that I know then on the walls were the one of my mates belonging to anarchists and alternative movement as Guernica, Beruriers Noirs etc .., but this was existing before also with the A of Anarchy .. Blek is Blek and I recall seeing a documentary on TV quite a few years ago (before 2000) about the unknown art on the streets in paris. Blek was featured as an artist who painted rats all over Paris and it showed some of his larger street art too.
Street art such as this was becoming noticed by the mainstream and Blek the father of this style and also noticed by galleries with his iconic stencilled rats. I'm sure Blek would have been successful without Banksy existing. Blek's been doing it for years.
Blek is the original. He is the Levi jeans of the street art world and Banksy is the Top Shop summer collection.
Blek is still producing affordable screen prints.

In the past he has actually produced some great street pieces and some lovely original works on canvas which is why its a such a pity that in recent times he has failed to deliver.

Even if the duck is there cos Blek likes Peking Duck in Chinese restos in Paris. The other one with the rat on the cloud could be interpreted in different ways but too many artists make images and are scared of attributing any meaning to them. I asked if anyone in the printing process mentioned to him that it may not be the best image. Blek respond "Envious ?" and blocked me straight away... and the guy who left a comment about the red background got a nice message from Blek with an image showing the same guy next a Ferrari with a caption like "Baby and their red toys".
Fact is that this print was never released so someone else told him.
Another fact, I own a Blek and every time I look at it, I am there, "What an asshole !"
What I like also is all the people discussing about artists and prints in private here... why doing the socialite and licking asses on FB pages run by the artist or gallery. You are laughable !!
Blek did great work in the 80s and 90s. He really lost it recently, he tried a new stuff (was it Cope2 or Whatson with these colourful graffiti backgrounds). He is back to B&W stencil but without any deep meaning. Copy and paste, ร la MBW
