Banksy Stop and Search- Opinions?, by top on Dec 18, 2007 12:56:27 GMT 1, ..seems like 'dove' would have been a far better print choice..
a lot of the prints for sale at the Ghetto look rushed to me..
I think the idea behind the whole thing is truly inspiring and an eye opener for those with blinkers on.
..good to know the money is going to be well spent tho.. I think we need to view the artists as more 'on show doing the humanity thing', rather than trying to wow us with their latest art creations.
..they have raised a pretty penny for those in dire need..thats what needs to be highlighted
To all those who bought from the show and are happy with their purchase..I bet at some point when you look at the art you bought (bless ya cottons'),at some point, you will realise that you played your part too..

Banksy Stop and Search- Opinions?, by Gentle Mental on Dec 18, 2007 13:13:47 GMT 1, it's a departure from his usual style. it's not the first time he does it.
he's got lots of styles on his site. Anything to get the story across the way he wants it.
i think the reason for this style just so the contrast between the fairytale feel and the harsh reality of the situation is more pronounced.
The humour may be crude, but i think it's done half-jokingly (if at all).
fairytales, imagination, people with dreams of walking up the yellow brick road, of finding their true homes do get F*** in the arse over there.
so i like it. and i really want one. but the country that i'm in, had its web access to the world go down at the exact same hour it was released...

Banksy Stop and Search- Opinions?, by lazydog on Dec 18, 2007 13:28:00 GMT 1, Personally, I would have loved one of the stenciled images like the Donkey at the checkpoint or the rat with the catapult. IMO stronger images and classics for me.

Yes the Catapult Rat would have been good too, but I can understand why he didn't do it as I thought the Rat prints were done and dusted.

I actually would have freaked out for a new rat. Imagine the surprise of seeing that pop up. Would have also lent itself to Banksy being able to do some quick and easy "hand-touches" that everyone else seemed to contribute to their stuff for SG.
Plus whenever I would have looked at it, it would remind me of the rat taking aim at the wall. When I look at Stop and Search I think of the LA show or the Glastonbury piece from the summer.

Banksy Stop and Search- Opinions?, by bullet on Dec 18, 2007 13:43:32 GMT 1, Does anyone that got this print think its not as good, or is it people that did not get one just saying that as they are bitter about it.
I think its a great print and the detail is brilliant compared to say the smudge which is bomb hugger.

I've already said what I think about it, and I was saying the same thing before it was released, so the fact that I got one hasn't changed my view.

nope no bitterness here either - i still want the print at cost but im still unsure wether it will be a succesful print - and is a different style from his earlier work. its still a grade above anyone else out there, but we only expect the best from Mr B.
i discussed this with Cbl and a couple other previously and my opinion remains the same - if i get one, and its printed poorly then i would move it on at cost to a forum member, iv been helped out similarly by members in the past

I often believe it works the other way 'round. People buy it who don't really like it and then publicly attempt to justify why so they don't feel like an arse. Or so they can try to "help" its value when they decide to resell it.
I also believe that some people would have hit the Buy button and paid even if the image of the print hadn't loaded yet or got an error. I can understand that, too.
With this print, though, I can see why some enjoy it. They get to have the topic that Banksy has been mostly pushing all year in his street work in print form. Personally, I like his prints normally because they differ from the street stuff. He draws a line between his "outdoor" and "indoor" work.
I basketed one and passed it on to someone because I just couldn't pull the trigger. Can't wait to see what he tells me when I ask to see how it looks on his wall in a few months. Hopefully he hits me up with some good pics.

Banksy Stop and Search- Opinions?, by Mrs Mouse on Dec 18, 2007 14:30:47 GMT 1, What's my opinion on Banksy's Stop and Search? I'll tell you a little story:
I experienced a situation last year whilst driving through Bristol that made me feel very intimidated by a traffic cop. I'm not trying to compare myself to Dorothy, but people who know me would say that I'm a very conservative, sensible, maybe slightly boring person. My greatest crime has been getting a speeding ticket when I was driving at 40mph in a 30mph zone. I rarely drink and, much to the amusement of my family, I've never been drunk. Yes, really! Anyway, I was with my husband and daughter, and having left the Old Duke after listening to some very enjoyable blues, we jumped into the car to head off home. About 3 minutes into the journey I was waiting at a set of traffic lights when a police car coming in the opposite direction suddenly did a u-turn in the road and came up behind me with lights flashing. I assumed that he was on an urgent mission to keep the streets safe for us law-abiding citizens, so I manouvered my car to allow him to pass. He then put his siren on and practically shook his fist at me whilst motioning me to pull over, which I did. It was pouring with rain, so I gingerly opened my window. The cop then barked at me to "turn off your engine and step out of your car" in an extremely aggressive manner. It was reminiscent of an American B movie, where the cop has just caught up with a bunch of teenage joyriders who had been driving recklessly through the suburbs. So I stepped out of my car and he motioned to me to stand at the back of the car. I thought for a moment that he was going to get me to spread my arms and legs over the boot so he could search me. He was red-faced and scowling, and it crossed my mind that perhaps it was a case of mistaken identity and maybe they thought I was a drug-runner or some other hardened criminal. I seriously started to worry that I was going to be taken away for questioning. I stood in the pouring rain right next to a bus-stop full of gawping people while he mumbled on about the offence I had committed and that he was of the belief that I was "intoxicated with um (long pause) intoxicating liquour". It was almost like he was trying to remember what to say from his book of cop's phrases. He told me to sit in the back of the police car for further questioning. Now I was really starting to get worried, and when my husband got out of the car to find out what was happening he was told to "please return to your vehicle, sir". So I sat in the police car, by now dripping wet, while I was questioned about where I'd been and how much I had drunk. I was obviously stone-cold sober, but the cop repeated his assertion that I was intoxicated. His fellow cop who had been driving the police car looked slightly embarrased while I was repeatedly questioned about how much I had drunk. (it was a bit of a good cop/bad cop situation) I was then told that I would have to wait for the breath-test equipment to arrive. The good cop asked me if I understood why I had been stopped, to which I said I didn't have a clue. He said it was because I was driving without my headlights on, as I had mistakenly only put on my sidelights! We then all sat in the car until a large police van pulled up and 2 more cops got out with the equipment and stood by the side of the car while the test was carried out. The people at the bus stop were still staring at me, probably wondering what dastardly deeds had been committed by this seemingly innocent-looking lady. So the breath test was done, and much to the disappointment of the bad cop, it showed that I hadn't drunk one drop of alcohol. The good cop continued to look embarrassed while the bad cop looked peeved that he didn't get the result he wanted. The good cop then took over and said that he didn't see the need to charge me with a traffic offence. The bad cop then gave me a very stern lecture in his best patronising policeman voice on the importance of putting my headlights on, particularly in the dark!
I don't have a problem with being pulled up if I've committed a traffic offence. My bug-bear is the level of aggression and hostility I experienced. So in a small way, I guess I know what it feels like to be going along minding your own business, innocently getting on with your life, and being subjected to an innapropriate level of heavy-handed treatment by a person in authority. For me, this was really quite a trivial and silly incident, but for people in some part of the world it is a very serious matter and if things get out of hand the results can be disasterous.
That's what the new print means to me.
What's my opinion on Banksy's Stop and Search? I'll tell you a little story:

Banksy Stop and Search- Opinions?, by wimpy on Dec 18, 2007 14:41:14 GMT 1, That is good that you can find yourself in the print.
I just don't see how that story is any different that any cop related story over the last 50 years. It isn't like you were accused of anything serious. He just thought you were loaded.
Do you really think that is what Banksy was aiming for here?

Banksy Stop and Search- Opinions?, by slowmo on Dec 18, 2007 14:42:32 GMT 1, I was a bit harsh about bomb hugger, but you know what i mean don't you, with mittens for hands and all that plus quite a basic printing style. This looks more considered IMO
Another way of looking at it is that he has now got a very good understanding of image manipulation in photoshop that he didnt have a few years ago.
I am not at all sure about this image, but will wait and see when people start posting pictures of them in the flesh.

Banksy Stop and Search- Opinions?, by uvme on Dec 18, 2007 14:58:25 GMT 1, What's my opinion on Banksy's Stop and Search? I'll tell you a little story: I experienced a situation last year whilst driving through Bristol that made me feel very intimidated by a traffic cop. I too have been made to feel like a criminal by the police just for associating in the past with travellers, so I get what they must feel like being prejudiced against all the time, and that's one of the points being made by this new print, they stop at nothing and nobody, eg even the innocent Dorothy, what has the world come to.
