Shepard Fairey "Earth Crisis" 24th June , by Deleted on Jun 22, 2016 19:59:57 GMT 1, What does Fairey mean when he says "we have to change"?
Wonder what Fairey's carbon footprint is too?
The art is nice, it's decorative, sort of christmas tree decoration decorative.
We don't need lecturing about the environment though.
There again it seems to be a la mode tehse days, artists promoting an environmental or other slogan.
Might have to jump on the band wagon.
Will call Dell boy on the brick mobile.
Whats that Dell, u got a slogan and an angle to sell art. Plop for Peace you say.
I like it.
My art will promote Plop for Peace.

As a huge shep fan I sympathize with your sentiments, as it's hard to see such a talanted artist rehash sub-par imagery. The way I view it is that in the past few years hes taken on the role of a philanthropist who just happens to be a highly influential artist. For collectors it kind of sucks given that hes kind of diluting his body of work with preachy and sub-par works. That being said, he's probably contributed more to charity and had more of an impact on the issues he cares about then any of his colleagues.
For the haters out there I challenge you to explore his early work, it's raw and powerful, and the urban art scene wouldn't be the same without it. If he wants to spend the tail end of his career making the world a better place he's totally earned that right.

I'm not in the US so all I know about the early works is Henri the Giant face wheatpasted on buildings and the film "They Live" with the word "Obey" on walls in the background, starring Rowdy Roddy Piper.
I just see it the same way I see corporate advertising using slogans.
save the planet, we have to change, save the earth we are responsible for our actions liberty equality fratenity we are the world we are all people love is what you need worms are cold and ugly but need love too
It all looks photoshoppy and lazy to me.
It looks slick though and reminds me of Franklin Mint editions of previous decades.
earned the right in which way?
People don't need to earn the right or ask permission to make art and prints, just look at Brainwash (bad example)
I think it's great art for collectors and will have some value the same way people collected baseball cards, beany babies and phone cards etc.

First of all, Rowdy Roddy Piper was a national treasure so I advise you to tread lightly....
That being said, I think your viewpoint is interesting from a number of different perspectives. Growing up in the 90s I LOVED "They Live," and still think its a masterpiece of B-Movie filmmaking (feel free to disagree). Fairey's whole absurdist propaganda reminds you of advertising because thats precisely the point. Its meant to blend in and obscure the urban landscape. Like in the movie, he's lifting the veil on the images we are bombarded with everyday, and presenting their true message: "obey, consume, repeat." Personally, taking that concept and actually making it a reality was brilliant from an artistic perspective, but then again I'm clearly bias.
Secondly, in a uniquely american way, his art was narrowly tailored to create brand recognition. He will readily admit this as well, he wanted his images to be instantly identifiable. He obviously capitalized on this with his clothing brand and everything else. You could call this selling out, but its actually what really attracts me not only to his artwork, but to his whole career. He's a true american success story: came from nothing, innovated, worked his ass off, and created an empire. In a world where the american dream is all but dead, his story is pretty damn inspiring.

I don't see any intellect behind Faireys art other than alledged plagiarism and theft of others images.
Plus I see some street artists just branding their name all over the place like Kaws , Fairey etc in order to create a market and make money.
