Was just getting it out of the bubble wrap ready for a re-hang, if that's not too much of a flex.

If using bubble wrap, I recommend ensuring the bubbles are facing outward (away from the artwork), not inward. Even more so when storing for lengthy periods.

I think that the bubble wrap itself can sometimes react with surfaces and have seen masses of cases of marks, even on dry paint surfaces (including a 10 year old acrylic house paint) but of course you are right and it does help if the work is dry as I’m sure not all paints react. If the bubble has imprinted into the surface then it sounds as though the work was a bit tacky, but if it’s oil then that takes months or even years to fully harden. This is tricky as the only safe way to pack modern paintings is in a transit frame that is then wrapped in polythene and nothing actually touches the surface of the painting at all.
Museums never use bubble wrap, either inside or out, so I’m afraid it is true to say that it is always risky stuff.

I would be grateful if you could let me know whether you've previously had to deal with bubble-wrap damage on canvases.

A friend of mine received an artwork which had been wrapped in bubble wrap the wrong way (with the bubbles facing inwards — a classic error for some inexperienced galleries), leaving a bubble-pattern imprint on the art, visible especially in raking light.

We're in slight disagreement as to the specific cause(s) of the damage: I believe the surface coat on the canvas (a glaze, varnish or polyurethane) simply wasn't completely dry before the canvas was wrapped, leaving it susceptible to pressure imprints. However, my friend was told that bubble wrap sometimes produces a "chemical reaction" with some artwork surface coats, which can result in a softening or slight melting of those surface coats (thereby making them susceptible to pressure imprints, e.g. from incorrectly-applied bubble wrap). I'm rather sceptical about the latter explanation.

May I ask whether you've ever heard of bubble wrap producing a chemical reaction with fully dried and cured glazes or varnishes?
