VALUATION • Art Valuation Advice, by Sixty Bells on Feb 7, 2024 20:17:10 GMT 1, I need honest opinions on Damien Hirst Virtous H9-6 Honour - thank you. While not referring to your piece specifically, I would describe the entire series of The Virtues as one of many recent examples pointing to the decline of Damien Hirst as a creative. For me, this is conceptually vacuous, substance-free work. And frankly boring, which is arguably the biggest crime of all. It epitomises art strictly as decoration — presumably bought by those who are less concerned about a piece having any real meaning to them, than about: (a) the fame or name-recognition of its creator; and (b) whether it will look good over the sofa. If it weren't for the relatively-high price tag, such work would be scooped up by surburban housewives and grannies all across the country. __________ I seem to recall an old interview with Hi rst from the 1990s, in which he mentioned the recurring complaint of his mother was something along the lines of, "Why don't you ever just paint something nice?"And here we are today. With a bunch of frigging cherry blossoms. It may have taken him two or three decades but, at long last, Hi rst (the former punk) is now creating the kind of art he knows will make mum happy. Could you elaborate on why you find these works conceptually vacuous, and substance free? I wouldn’t argue that they are vastly challenging, but I think it’s worth bearing in mind the context in which they were created, during a period when the whole world (including Hirst) was locked away. If his stories are to be believed, these were his response to the separation of lockdowns and created by him alone locked away in his studio. (I’m not naive enough to think it really was just him but hey, let’s give him a little artistic license)
Their release coincided almost perfectly with the general public’s release from lock down, so much so that it was unclear if his launch show would go ahead due to Covid. Furthermore the images seem to resonate with vast swathes of the public who maybe are craving some kind of beauty and new life against an endlessly apocalyptic news cycle. To stand infront of one of these original paintings is truly a moving experience, and their scale obviously adds to that, as in so much of Hirsts work.
The purpose of ‘art’ and ‘the artist’ is obviously up for debate, but I would argue that reflecting life and nature in a way that resonates deeply with many people would be a good one.
So yes he’s in it for the money, but I find the story of this series compelling.

Looking to update home insurance. Not seen one for sale. Many thanks free gif hosting Not sure how helpful this is, but someone has one for sale @ £4000 and someone is willing to pay £700 on fairart, so it’s somewhere between the two. 😂 I haven’t seen one for sale either, so I’m guessing most collectors hold onto this one. Probably around the £2500-£3000 mark for insurance I’d say to take into account cost of framing too.

VALUATION • Art Valuation Advice, by djbzy on Mar 26, 2024 19:25:29 GMT 1, Hi, all.
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but it's time to renew the house insurance, sooooooo…
Two much-loved Mark Drew prints (from the Deez Nutz show), "One What? One Love" (Nas) and "Kick In the Door" (Biggie), from Mark's original site, makingends.com, waaaaay back (2012-13) that came with a cute little "Easy Come, Easy Go" print. Each is a numbered edition of 70. Paid AUS$20 at the time if memory hasn't failed completely. Any ideas of current value?
Not looking to sell, just making sure I'm covered!

There were 750 copies printed from what I can remember.
