It's mania really, this happens sometimes with art but it's pretty out of control right here.
I worry that all of this just becomes this self fulfilling prophecy kind of thing. Everyone saw what happened to Banksy and now everyone doesn't want to miss out on the next big thing and everyone is trying to predict who will be next. So when people start to see prices jump I feel they panic and buy in without really thinking. I worry that money, panic, fear and gread are the real motivators here. When the dust settles and we're into the 2010s let's all get back together and see what's left.
Micallef and Banksy will hold their values overall (although I won't be surprised if prices go flat or down sometime and soon.) But everyone else you mentioned, especially mantis (fine work but just way too derivative) are still complete speculation at this point. And once again the prices that there prints are already going for now - you could instead get signed prints by world reknowned artists with top notch pedigrees. Neate, I'm not sure about. But the prices for his work is way out of line with similar and more established artists too. I'd be careful everywhere you tread.
But what do I know

I buy for two reasons one if I like it and two if I think it's going to be a good investment. I looked at the market a while before I bought anything and bought some things that I went off rapido which I have lost a small bit of money on because I looked again at them and thought they were dross, however most of my collection which is probably meagre compared to some people on this forum I am well chuffed with and there are a lot pieces in there that have gone up like something stupid. I've got quite a bit of Blek which I like which has gone nowhere but I'm keeping it because I think time will tell with him and in the meantime I like it. I've started selling and have no problem with making a profit either it adds to the fun of it.That's just my viewpoint for what it's worth.

Disagree. Opus Underground hiked their prices up before anyone else shortly before the auction several weeks ago. The prices raised at that auction really set a benchmark when most of the eyestorm work went for about 4k. Then everyone went mad in anticipation of the LA show and forthcoming tour.

Let Baldwin be a lesson to some people, his prices did explode over night (doubled) before coming back down to earth, I wouldn't like to be someone who paid twice the original price for investment only to find that now they're worth half what was paid out.

Good point that I actually wasn't aware of. Seems as though his current prices seem fair. Although someone is trying to get a huge amount of money for some originals on ebay. Baldwin yes, is complete speculation though as far as long term prospects and price appreciation. (like most artists) But still might do well long term.
But yeah, this happens pretty often. Flavor of the week, all the rage one year, completely forgotten the next. Which of all these artists will still be around 10-20 years from now? Nobody knows but probably not many.

I was chatting to stuey about Baldwin the other day. I don't think 'hype' killed his momentum, I think the market just wasn't ready for such a high rate of work to become available from him. He pumped out loads of originals and prints and then the dutch guy released a gallery load of old stuff onto the market at the same time. I think that soured his price and ruined his momentum. If Mantis and Beejoir appreciate the importance of keeping the audience wanting more, they should continue to do well as long as the economy remains strong.
Disclaimer
The price of art can go down as well as up and a wise collector only spends what they can afford to lose.

Banksy is probably the only other artist on these boards who's work actually makes you smile.

Now prices have levelled out and gone down. They will still be remembered as the leaders of the Superflat movement and I think their place in art history is secured. But will their prints command the sort of prices they were fetching a few years ago? I doubt it.
