Kidult ๐ซ๐ท Graffiti Art โข Luxury Brands, by Dr Plip on Oct 24, 2014 1:01:37 GMT 1, No. We can discuss it here.
I just wonder if Kidult really knows something regarding the creation of Ebola or if he's using Ebola because it's in the news right now and it rhymes with Cola.
I don't for one moment believe that pharmaceutical companies wake up each morning and start deconstructing viruses and bacteria simply out of the goodness of their hearts. They're profit driven. Which is why they patent each and every tiny thing that they can. They protect both their investment and future profit. The drugs are useful though.
You can see why people are naturally suspicious of these companies though. If I can't trust my mechanic to fix my car without making up some s**t so he can sell me something I don't really need, how am I supposed to trust big pharma? An industry that sees profits increase by vast sums of money when people get sick (or believe they are about to).
This mechanic thing might just be my paranoia though.

Kidult ๐ซ๐ท Graffiti Art โข Luxury Brands, by misterx on Oct 24, 2014 1:29:06 GMT 1, The thing that got my curiosity piqued was the announcement that 4,000 troops from the 101st Airborne division were being sent to West Africa to "fight and defeat" Ebola??
Given that the average marine have no clue regarding Ebola, why then are they there?
Wouldn't it be more helpful to send medically trained staff?
Why marines?
i have my own theories, but wondered, given the encouragement to discuss by DR.Plip, what others thought?

As far as i understood it they were sent there in order to enforce quarrantine zones, and protect facilities and supply lines, in addition to setting up communications facilities and training centers.
You do realize they are not going to paris here, they are going to a country and a part of the world where infrastructure is severly lacking and military engineers (25% of those being sent) are hopefully going to be doing just that... Setting up infrastructure.
also, all military personnel undergo training on how to operate under biochemical attack conditions.
oh yeah, and it is 3000 military personnell not 4000.

Kidult ๐ซ๐ท Graffiti Art โข Luxury Brands, by Dr Plip on Oct 24, 2014 1:45:36 GMT 1, There were similar theories regarding other nasty human-eating illnesses out there. HIV, SARS, Swine Flu, Avian Flu. Only recently, stories were circulating that Avian Flu was a weaponised version of the Spanish Flu. The UK government spent ยฃ600 million on Tamiflu, which has since turned out to be not needed and would have pretty much useless anyway. With evidence to suggest that its ineffectiveness was concealed by the manufacturers.
They like to make money. I'm sure they do shady things. If my electricity supplier keeps getting caught trying to shaft me, then I'm sure my drug companies are happy to exploit me as well.
I doubt that these viruses and diseases are man-made. I think they would be for more effective if they were. And there have been horrible contagious things killing humans long before pharmaceutical companies came onto the scene. But for just as long a time, there have also been people around to both genuinely heal and exploit the sick and dying.
It's good to ask yourself questions about things though. Like "Can I trust that large pharmaceutical companies won't intentionally slow or restrict the development of vaccines and treatments for diseases through the patenting of information and research" Or questions like "Is Kidult trying to open my eyes about the birth of Ebola? Or is he trying to sell me some limited edition artwork?"

Kidult ๐ซ๐ท Graffiti Art โข Luxury Brands, by Dr Plip on Oct 24, 2014 1:48:30 GMT 1, I think it's more likely that the military were/are being used to protect borders, buildings and quarantine zones. If the news is to be believed (they can't lie all the time can they?), then quarantines were not being enforced. The military are actually also good for distribution of items and other "non-shooty or blowy-uppy" tasks.
Edit: I don't mean that last line to sound as patronising as it came out.
Edit again: Also, I doubt the US wants to invade West Africa.

Kidult ๐ซ๐ท Graffiti Art โข Luxury Brands, by sgolby on Oct 24, 2014 1:49:12 GMT 1, There's almost certainly a discussion to be had about large pharmaceuticals patenting viruses for commercial gain, but I guess that's not for here, just follow the line we're fed and act like good law abiding citizens. We are welcome to discuss but let's understnd the facts. The viruses are patented because the only way to create a vaccine is by modifying live virus in a manner such as to induce the immune system to develop antibodies to fight them.
The patenting of the virus is the first step to patenting the vaccine.
i am nkt justifying the near criminal profiteering of the pharmaceutical industry, however patenting the virus is done to create the vaccine, not to creat the virus.

my reference to paris was simply a reference to a "modern" western city where infrastructure is strong.
In order to control and prevent the spread of the virus, and care for the ill, there has to be solid infrastructure.

Kidult ๐ซ๐ท Graffiti Art โข Luxury Brands, by Dr Plip on Oct 24, 2014 2:02:22 GMT 1, If regions that are poor or are cut off, badly organised or what have you, start getting Ebola cases, then they will struggle to contain the situation. Some of these regions have ridiculously few doctors and properly trained medical staff.
Think of it as a rowdy A&E department on a Friday or Saturday night. Even if the doctors are there, you'll probably need security and cleaners at some point.
Ebola can be contained (and treated, it seems), but it does need to be contained. We can't just let it run rampant through another country and expect to deal with it only when it reaches our part of the world.
