RYCA π¬π§ Ryan Callanan β’ Star Wars β’ Smiley β’ New Release , by fielder on Aug 12, 2010 14:08:16 GMT 1, I think these are awesome. I got a small Acid Head from Ink'd and I love it. Real craftmanship. If you did some small stars pieces as well I would definitely get one!

yeah laminated glass. its the best thing to 'jet cut' because of the strength.

RYCA π¬π§ Ryan Callanan β’ Star Wars β’ Smiley β’ New Release , by atom on Aug 14, 2010 10:00:38 GMT 1, Pretty sweet man...like the look of these. The only thing for me is the wood being used here, not a big fan of the MDF, think it cheapens it when you talk about the materials. Screams DT classes and its always being used in those fix your house up in an hour TV shows for Β£100. Not a good look ! Your also charging a premium for these so it would be cool if you used some better wood. Plus it would also give you more options, you could achieve a different feel if you were to stain the wood still showing the grain, which could soften the overall piece. These are still cool though.

RYCA π¬π§ Ryan Callanan β’ Star Wars β’ Smiley β’ New Release , by RYCA on Aug 14, 2010 11:00:53 GMT 1, MDF has a bad reputation, but it is a versatile material and not as cheap as you may think. there are many grades and densities. the fact that each frame is made from 3 different thickness laminations (18,25,25mm) doesn't make these frames cheap either because of the engineering that is envolved. each layer of the heart shape consists of 3-4 peices which overlap when built up (like brick work) apart from the top face which is cut in one solid piece (face joins are horrible). i have not shyed from the fact they are built this way and you can see the construction on the final pieces.
When i make square pieces i use either rose or tulip wood as this come in 'lengths' with these shaped pieces, the vibe is the shape and they are breaking away from the traditional 'square' pieces i make also, with the timber moulding the grain of the timber is often lost in the hand painting process (5 coats, primerx, undercoat x2, topcaots glossx2) .
New technology and new materials, some would argue that fibreglass cheapens it ? in the end i think if you can make something look beautiful by using whatever materials it doesn't really matter. i love an Adam neate on cardboard. for me value is in the execution and not the substraight.

RYCA π¬π§ Ryan Callanan β’ Star Wars β’ Smiley β’ New Release , by Heavyconsumer on Aug 15, 2010 15:09:33 GMT 1, My first and only very fleeting impression from the above images, was that these might look a bit photo-frameish. However, from spending a couple of minutes looking more closely, it is clear that a lot of care craftmanship has gone into them.
While you've made a GREAT rebuttal to the mdf comment above, I still find it tough to detatch from my own prejudice toward Ikea flatpack hardwood, even though I agree 100% on the Neate point you make and am happy to buy works on paper, cardboard etc (TBH I think this is much more because it brings some artists' works into my price range than because I love those mediums eg. I would love a street piece, but not as much as I'd love one of his gallery pieces, I'll just never have the cash for one!). You do also omit that those cardboard pieces were left lying on the pavement, whereas you're asking people to pay a substantial sum for these, so I'm not sure there's much of a parallel.
Nice hearts anyway and I am interested to see how the other shapes you mentioned turn out. Good luck with it all.

RYCA π¬π§ Ryan Callanan β’ Star Wars β’ Smiley β’ New Release , by Warm Gun on Aug 15, 2010 17:47:47 GMT 1, The wooden frame is laminated so does it really matter what type of wood it is?
It makes no difference.
Why would an artist spend days crafting a poncey oak frame (or other expensive wood) just to laminate it, you just wouldn't bother would you?
Like RYCA said, MDF ain't cheap anymore either.

RYCA π¬π§ Ryan Callanan β’ Star Wars β’ Smiley β’ New Release , by RYCA on Aug 15, 2010 18:04:04 GMT 1, i i never leave the grain expose when i use hardwood, as its not really fitting to these pieces, i have plans on doing some in future where i can use mahogany or oak for a frame and polish/wax it up so the frame itself is still visible as 'wood' but for all my 'pop' stuff there really isn't any point. oh yeah the small 'square' acid head in the picture are not MDF, they are made from obeche.
