SEEN ๐บ๐ธ Richard "Richie" Mirando โข Godfather of Graffiti, by iamzero on Sept 23, 2017 8:12:11 GMT 1, It would be great if other original writers were following Seen in creating affordable pieces for long standing graffiti fans. I have to say as much as I'm likely to grizzle about how I'm spending money on Seen's artwork that should really be being spent on my new babies sometime it's too hard to resist.

SEEN ๐บ๐ธ Richard "Richie" Mirando โข Godfather of Graffiti, by M on Sept 25, 2017 20:07:52 GMT 1, MY INTERVIEW WITH SEEN WE DID ONE MONTH AGO. Sorry for publishing late Graffiti Loser
1. When did you start writing?
I began writing graffiti at the age of 11 years old. At that time
i did not know much about graffiti, Although i had an urge that came
from inside me to do it. At that time i would scribble my name on school
desks, And when leaving school i would walk home and write my name on
the way out on the school doors and would hit every mail box lamp pole
along the way home. This was the beginning for me the more i wrote my
name the more i wanted to do it.
2. What was growing up in Brooklyn like in the 60s and 70s
Growing up in the BRONX in the 60's and 70's were all good times,
i grow on in the quiet section of the Bronx there were no apartment
building only one family homes with back yards. My neighborhood was
all Italian and Italians stuck together and kept our neighborhood safe for
us kids to play in the street, back then there was no need to lock
your doors or your windows, everyone knew each other who lived there. It
was a good environment to grow up in.
3. Did you see outlines on tags then or any masterpieces , stars,
arrows or characters just before you started doing graffiti?
When i started writing graffiti there were only tags, master pieces
did not exist at this time. However i watched the growth of graffiti
from tagging to tags with outlines around the letters to stars and
dots being added to the tag.
4. What's the first graffiti you noticed?
The first real graffiti i seen by seasoned writers was on the
elevated tracks of the # 6 Pelham Bay line, at first i could not read
most of it looking up at it from the street, Although there were
names i was able to see, Dead legs, Aj-161 and Priest-167 to name a few.
5. What did you write first time?
my first name i wrote was FAITH -1 the number one was a roman
numeral one. This name never made it to the subway trains.
6. Where did you first start writing?
I first started writing in the Bronx where i was born and raised.
7. When, where and why did you steal your first spray-can? Did you
steal any? Was it easy those days?
I remember racking my first two spray cans from Martins Paints,
Martins was an east coast change of stores. Next door to the right of
Martins was a John's Bargain Stores as soon as i came out of Martins
paint i hid my two cans of paint and went in John;s and racked 2 more
cans, which now i had 4 cans of paint for a beginner this was good and
at that time you only needed two cans to do one piece, Back then you
used one can for a filling and the other for a outline, and then you
reverse it and ended up getting two pieces from two cans.
8. Why do you think you were starting writting graffiti?
NO ANSWER
9. Did you ever get cought for doing graffiti or When did you get
cought or doing graffiti first time?
I never got caught doing graffiti i been very lucky that i slipped
through the system. There was a point of my writing career that i was
on the Top of the Vandal Squads list of writers they wanted to catch,
they even had a pool to see who can catch SEEN first. they made many
attempts to catch me by arresting me for no reason at all, Meaning every time
they made an attempt it wasent involving graffiti. Back then they
needed to catch you in the act, they were not able to arrest you on hear say.
10. Did you write on trains or walls first?
I started tagging on mail boxes lamp poles and walls before i
started writing on trains, however trains came shortly after when i
felt walls were not enough to satisfy my need for getting up.
11. Why didn't you put your street number with your name as many do?
Not everyone did that, and some who wrote a number had nothing to
do with a street address. Also not all streets are numbers, most of them
are streets with names. For me the #1 was important not a street #.
12. When did you consider yourself an artist?
I always wanted to be an artist my whole life, i was drawing and
painting since a little child and i knew in my heart some day i would
become one, Although i never thought in a million years it would be
for graffiti.
13. Were you calling it graffiti when you started writing?
Yes, Graffiti, and we were not artists we were 'writers' our
signature mark we left behind was called a 'Tag' and our pieces were
called 'Master Pieces' back then.
14. When did you sell your first painting?
I always sold my work from as far back as 1975.
15. What did you think when you sold your first painting and how
much money you earn for your first painting?
I never though much about the feeling of selling my work, it's
just a way i can support myself. Everything thing i did through the years
to earn money to support myself had to do with being creative.
16. When did you do your first painting on the subway map? Who did
it first?
I have no idea when i did my first subway map, Although 'QUIK'
RTW claims to be the first writer to paint on subway maps and sell them as
art.
17. When did you start taking pictures of your own street works?
I started taking photos right from the beginning, i used to use my
mum's camera and we would rack the film that came with free developing
by mail. so i was able to take lots of photos for no cost at all.
18. As a one of early graffiti artist do you feel any ownership of
it?
I do not feel any type of owner ship, i am just one of many that
make up a whole. I played my part to the best of my ability and was
lucky enough to stand out among tens of thousands of NYC writers at
that time.
19. You run graffiti loser project which seems to be independent to
your gallery career. Please explain us why do you run this website and
sell your art via internet?
First off i would like to talk about the name GRAFFITI LOSER.
Most people believe when they see the word LOSER they think im calling
myself a loser. This is not true, it's totally the opposite it really means
WINNER and not for me but for others. Graffiti Loser is my way of
giving back to those who would like to own a piece of SEEN work that would
never be able to afford to pay the prices my work gained through the
years. I am a firm believer that when you take you should always give
back. I have SEEN fans out in the world that mean more to me then
collectors who buy just for an investment. So in return i make small
canvas paintings, subway maps and metal signs for those wanting a
piece of NYC subway history.
20. You did the similar project couple years ago and it was not such
a big success. In your opinion why it succeed now? It's because of
Instagram?
I done this many times in my life through the years way before the
age of computer, before My Space, Facebook and way before Instagram.
And it was always a success every time. How ever life is always
changing and sometimes i need to hand pick what i am able to do at the moment.
You gotta realize i am a one man army, i do not have a studio of
workers helping me create work, i create my work from beginning to end alone.
21. How many canvases have you created so far?
You ask how many canvases did i create,,, thats like asking me how
many SEEN pieces i painted in my life. i have no idea but i can tell
you its tens and tens of thousands easily. Example, i lived in Paris for 5
years during that 5 years i painted over 5,200 documented paintings in
abstract. Thats just the abstract paintings, now count the graffiti
work and other work i did while i was there ,its gotta be close to 10
thousand paintings in 5 years time.
