Santa's Ghetto 2006, by danvnuk on Dec 19, 2006 10:23:13 GMT 1, As far as Im aware (and I got one lol) They are screenprints - certainly smelt like a screenprint when I opened the tube!
The read that article in the ES on the way home from work - its full of errors -
The prints are not machine printed (As far as I know - Im prepared to be corrected on that from someone who knows about these things!)
They ARE numbered (on the reverse) They attribute the Blair with camera phone image to Banksy (Bet the actual artist is really pleased with that!)
Strange article really, quite a negative slant on something that to me felt quite positive.

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by slowmo on Dec 19, 2006 10:34:37 GMT 1, The print sure did smell, but I figured that must have been the type of ink used to make an impression on that paper. Definitely got half tones on the print, notsure if screen printing allows for half tones or not to be honest? All my other banksy that are screen printed have solid print impressions, no half tones.
I dont care if its a litho, its a cool print and to be honest as you can see above, I am not sure what difference screen or litho makes to the appreciation of a print.

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by Curley on Dec 19, 2006 10:57:31 GMT 1, Its proof once again (if you ever needed it) that not all you read in the newspaper is correct about anything, let alone some thing simple like a print bought on Oxford Street. Also trust them to pick out a complete Kn*bhead with nothing positive to say at all. As for not knowing what he was queuing for.... it was in the window. (argh people make me soooo angry)
PS I think its some kind of photographic paper hence the problems with marks etc.

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by Ågent ßacardi on Dec 19, 2006 10:57:38 GMT 1, The author seems to think that anything Santas Ghetto automatically equals Banksy.
I got that vibe too, especially after attributing the Blair piece to Banksy. Don't think the author did too much research before firing off the presses. Also, is it exactly an anti-war image? I think there's a small element of it, but don't think it's 100% anti-war... but that's just me.

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by alvington89 on Dec 19, 2006 11:00:23 GMT 1, slowmo - You can screen print half tones. I think that the reason screen printing is associated more with art prints is probably due to the 'hand pulled, craft' element. Most litho is produced on an inline automated press.

Well, Applause wasn't exactly composed of solid print impressions, but it is a screenprint (it is, isn't it?). I'm slightly confused also, I understand that screenprinting is essentially an extension of stenciling, but how do you get these almost-photographic-quality halftones through stencils? Wish I could have the opportunity to witness a real live screenprinting process someday.

Cheers for the info, honestly didnt know and done a degree in publishing that included a year studying printing! Just shows what effort I put into that degree. Cheers

I was told 'Flag' was a screenprint by POW and having looked at it again I agree with POW staff, definatley looks like a halftone screenprint to me, just like Applause.

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by corblimeylimey on Dec 23, 2006 13:00:48 GMT 1, There's no problem in screen printing halftones, it's just that you can't print as fine a halftone as offset litho. Screen printing should allow around 60-80 dots per inch where as offset litho is usually 150-175 dots per inch on good paper. Start counting those dots!
