Harland Miller โข Happiness The Case Against, by docean on May 24, 2017 5:34:14 GMT 1, Just hype. Just forum members trying to make money, hyping up prints saying they're worth ยฃ20k easy when a frigging canvas three times the size is only ยฃ30k with fees. That would be a cool story if only it were true. I know of several that were purchased off the secondary and it's only been out a few months. No hype. No conjecture. Just plain facts.
LOL ยฃ30k for a Harland canvas. Do you know his market at all? You would be lucky to get a 1/1 on paper for that price.
Canvases are usually $85k+ and that's if you can find a desirable one. Not many get sold, people hang on to them.

(If you even meant to) you referenced an outlier, not the norm. Don't pretend you were even in the same ballpark

Harland Miller โข Happiness The Case Against, by stelio on May 24, 2017 13:50:26 GMT 1, Most of those listing are two years old. If you have been following along Harlands hit a little of a rise last 6-9months. Not as big as invader but still a rise. When these auctions happened many of the prints were still available at source, now you can barely find any at original source. More people are getting into Harland's work and for good reason.

Its not zero sum though is it?
There are a very limited supply of prints and xx number of people who can afford a print at 8-10k vs a much smaller amount of people who can afford a canvas. Coupled with the relative publicity of the prints vs, I imagine a lot of people not knowing or looking at the auctions.
This means there are proportionately far greater number of interested parties who have the knowledge and means to pay for a 10k print vs a much smaller number who would could afford the canvas even if they were aware.
In my case I can justify 8-10k on a print I really want but im not in the 35k plus fees for a single piece of art bracket, i imagine many others on here are the same.
It doesnt mean the prices are hype, doesn't mean they aren't either. It just means that because a sold for x doesnt follow that b should sell for y.
In my industry the same convention applies. More people can afford cheaper assets vs expensive =relatively more attractive deals on higher priced superior asset.
Cheaper assets sell more quantity than expensive ones.

With Miller you either like the whole book thing or you don't, the title speaks to you or it doesn't. I will admit some of his prints are getting ridiculously high but the same can be said for Invader, Pejac, Banksy etc. An artist's true market test is his oil/acrylic on canvas. With that being said, Miller prints from 2 years ago asking 20k usd is either genius or insanity.

I also do think that there will be a rebalance at some point soon. When prints begin to eclipse original works corrections typically follow suit wether by price increases or decreases.

Wasn't this still for sale at source last month for like $5k? Pretty sure I toyed with the idea of buying one from Ingleby. Current bid is for sure already over the last tiered price sold.

Harland Miller โข Happiness The Case Against, by mawk on May 26, 2017 19:09:24 GMT 1, I believe that Ingleby prices included VAT, so final tier price was ยฃ5,200 or ยฃ5,400 inc VAT, and I believe Dare sold one recently. The asking price was ยฃ12k to ยฃ13k so I presume went for around that price. I bought one from Ingleby 9 months ago and they told me it had been a " steady seller " since it had first gone on sale. Surprised it took over 2 years to sell out in the first place for one of his signature titles.
