Harland Miller โข Happiness The Case Against, by Deleted on Feb 8, 2017 19:47:02 GMT 1, From what I can gather: 1-20: 4.4k + VAT (may have misheard 4K) 20-28: 5.5 + VAT After this- ยฃ800 jump per 8 sold, so presumably: 28-36: 6.3 + VAT 36-44: 7.1 + VAT -50: 7.9 + VAT Personally I'd have preferred a single price point of say ยฃ6k for the entire edition - it gives the impression of an equal playing field for all
Obviously everyone called Bob is more equal than the rest of us.

I find this tiered system very unfair when applied to a work that is oversubscribed immediately ,much like Pace's handling of recent Kaws & Basquiat releases. How can it be considered right to charge up to ยฃ3k more because one logged an interest 5 minutes before another ?? Not for me ...

Harland Miller โข Happiness The Case Against, by Criminal Mischief on Feb 8, 2017 21:23:04 GMT 1, Obviously it gives the buyers confidence that the work will go up in value. And arguably, is more transparent about offering a discount to their better clients. So I guess that's another way to think about it.
But I agree, I want to be the first to know about it and have the opportunity to buy it for the lowest price as well.

Harland Miller โข Happiness The Case Against, by sircoxson on Feb 9, 2017 11:56:30 GMT 1, thanks, first useful bit of information in this thread. what's the price? No its not, the first useful bit of information was letting us know there was a release, no? And if you read through the thread you'll find info on the tiered pricing I have to partly disagree - as others already stated the info on the release without source or pricing and not letting the others know after questions came up, was childish and stupid. (I know sth and you don't!!!).
Price came up later in the thread, correct. My fault.

Really discouraging for those who just want something nice to look at rather than those who are solely looking for investment. When the bubble pops... On the other hand, it gives the person who just want something to look at a chance to buy directly from source for the same price as it would have costed from mr flipper. In this way you some what restrict the price increase until the whole edition is sold out. It sucks to not be able to buy at tier 1 but I rather have a chance at tier 2/3 than have to buy on secondary market. I dont say that a 3,3k is a reasonable mark up, but I can somewhat see some logic in tier-process as a thing.

Reflex is tiered - when I was shopping for my "Who Cares Wins" print, their response certainly had the price based on how many were left in the edition. White Cube is also tiered. Any of their current HM editions for sale will tell you that. Personally have no issue with however artists choose to price or sell their works. Would love to be "in the know" on every release but it's not always realistic. I don't see a lot of Harland Miller being flipped so I assume the first tiers are going to true collectors. No issues with that at all.

Harland Miller โข Happiness The Case Against, by Love Is In The Air on Feb 9, 2017 20:39:30 GMT 1, The stuff I have bought from Manifold has always been very well printed and beautifully finished and I know the boss there is a HM fan so I expect this collaboration will look great in the flesh.
But it doesn't sound like there is any time to dither, it's a case of either push the button now or no chance getting one...

I would be interested in forum members take ( meaning ) aside from price, availability & making of this print ........ The Peguin ones speak for themselves in wit & vision ๐ I love everything about this piece except for the words...bit of a tough thing to overlook Oh man..I really love the text on this one!! You could read it just as, (paraphrasing), "The case against Happiness" and leave it at that which I totally understand just appears as a bit of a downer...
Bear with me as I am half a bottle into as**tty bourbon...
The best part of Miller's body of work to me will alway's be the personal meaning that each piece will represent to observer. If you don't connect with the text it is admitidly a tough sell.
I believe that many if not most people that have lived a decent portion their lives have had many life moments that in sum could present a "case against happiness". The last 18 months for me personally have been some of the most challenging of my life so far. I have lost one of my longest friends, an Uncle, and step father all to Cancer. I lost 2 Grandmothers, My Mother had a stroke, My Brother passed away at 42, and a week before Christmas we lost my Mother in law.
When I look at this piece by Harland I am instantly reminded of all of it.. I am reminded that at times I have reason to be unhappy as does everyone.. but I also see that the book is closed with the prominent cover text being the word HAPPINESS brightly colored.
This is where it turns around for me and I end up seeing something very empowering and positive. I see it as having the choice to keep the book open and make a decision to live in a world where I can let my own personal "case against happiness" overshadow my case for true happiness... OR I can continue to live life, struggle now and then with what life throws my way, fill pages but actually close the book after each chapter is behind me and get back to a focus on all of the happiness that life actually does has to offer. This work seems to well capture those everyday experiences that make life both fulfilling and merciless sometimes.
Anyway.. just what I see there and why I like it. Back to the swill.

This work seems to well capture those everyday experiences that make life both fulfilling and merciless sometimes. Anyway.. just what I see there and why I like it. Back to the swill. Yeah, I think the prominent way to read it is "The Case Against Happiness".
But, I think you can also read it as a riposte/rejoinder to a lot of "why do you do [insert whatever non-immediately-apparent-value-add-activity-here]" / "why would you spend so much money on a print of a book" type of response - it's kind of a "I hear what you're saying, but on the other side of things: it makes me happy" type of response. Happiness is the case against the negativity.
To me, this one is too immediately read as the negative, which is why I didn't try and get on the list, even at the higher price point, but I can see a positive reading in it.
I'm sure it's going to look fucking amazing though, and I'm going to regret not buying one.

When I look at this piece by Harland I am instantly reminded of all of it.. I am reminded that at times I have reason to be unhappy as does everyone.. but I also see that the book is closed with the prominent cover text being the word HAPPINESS brightly colored. I look at it as having the choice to keep the book open and choose live in a world where I can let my own personal "case against happiness" overshadow my case FOR happiness or I can continue to live life, struggle now and then with what life throws my way, fill pages but actually close the book after each chapter and get back to a focus on the happiness that life actually does has to offer. This work seems to well capture those everyday experiences that make life both fulfilling and merciless sometimes. Anyway.. just what I see there and why I like it. Back to the swill.
Great reply to my post ........ You have said it. Great, good & better times mixed with a few waves in life ! Your a good person to put a post like that .......... Says it all ๐
I love everything about this piece except for the words...bit of a tough thing to overlook Oh man..I really love the text on this one!! Healthy wait list for the print so I suppose that's one way of putting people that inquire onto the larger print for ยฃ9k.
