Swoon πΊπΈ Contemporary Art β’ Street Art β’ Art For Sale, by faute on Apr 24, 2008 19:51:31 GMT 1, Totally agree. Because shes so non-materialistic, I'm just a little sensitive to people potentially taking advantage of her talent. For artistic integritys sake, these are not originals.
Could you provide me with a definition of "original" (not "one off", but original)?
The use of the term drives me crazy. For example, is a Faile silkscreen an original if on wood or canvas and not on paper, or if 1/1 and not in an edition of 12?
For me, original means something like not derived from something else. Thus a screenprint in an edition of 100'000 without handfinishing can be to me. Or it's not in some cases.
I understand that you can disagree, but what's your definition?

Swoon πΊπΈ Contemporary Art β’ Street Art β’ Art For Sale, by bobbymeachamjr on Apr 24, 2008 19:59:33 GMT 1, In the creative field, an original design = "Original". The first time you design something = the "Original". Thats what art is, CREATIVITY. Not creating 1 design and then doing different colors, adding some scribble and then labelling them all as original. THE ORIGINAL CREATIVE IS THE ORIGINAL.

Thus, basically this for example www.newimageartshop.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=472
is not an original for you? Or indeed the vast majority of things by Swoon sold at NIA.
And why a Faile NYC print in an edition is not an original when designed for the first time? Only the first one in the edition like 1/12 would be?

Swoon πΊπΈ Contemporary Art β’ Street Art β’ Art For Sale, by pezlow on Apr 24, 2008 20:10:44 GMT 1, It is not easy to define an original. But IMHO it stands to reason that anything that is released in an edition of greater than 1 cannot be an original. Thus banksy canvasses such as heavy weaponry etc would be classed as "editions" not originals.
Whatever amount of hand finishing and extra touches you put on a print it doesn't turn it into an original, albeit it might make it a very special print.
But it doesn't even stop there. I would argue that even some art produced in an edition of 1 couldn't truly be classed as an original if the image has been reused. Thus a screenprinted faile butterfly girl 1/1 on paper isn't, IMHO, an original in the true sense of the word because there are other screenprinted butterfly girl 1/1's on paper. That doesn't make it any less special though.
When faile do their collaged pieces (a la rotella and villegle) then I would say those are originals - they will all be different and incorporate different elements to them.....

Swoon πΊπΈ Contemporary Art β’ Street Art β’ Art For Sale, by bobbymeachamjr on Apr 24, 2008 20:14:48 GMT 1, Well said Pez. I've brought this up before and in particular about Failes nonchalant labelling of "original" as well...
must note these issues (which i believe are serious) are only prevalent in this scene - mainly because we're dealing w/stencils. It is up to the integrity of artists and dealers alike to uphold these labels but I for one have noticed, more often than not, that the desire to sell overrides all...

Swoon πΊπΈ Contemporary Art β’ Street Art β’ Art For Sale, by faute on Apr 24, 2008 20:19:07 GMT 1, Pez, I can agree with you. And I totally agree regarding hand-finishing. I can understand the use of the term as that it has to be unique (or simply not derived from anything, being the source from which a copy, reproduction, or translation is made, etc... like I used).
But, the mixing of both drives me a bit crazy (like using only the surface or the medium to differentiate) (edit: which is not the case here bobbymeachamjr and my message was not against you)

Swoon πΊπΈ Contemporary Art β’ Street Art β’ Art For Sale, by pezlow on May 12, 2008 14:01:36 GMT 1, I've managed to pick up a signed swoon medusa print off the bay so my unsigned version, published by Phonica records in 2004 is for sale. This is from an edition of 200 although it is not numbered. They were Β£50 at source but I am selling for Β£40 here plus shipping on top at cost. BARGAIN.
