Swoon πΊπΈ Contemporary Art β’ Street Art β’ Art For Sale, by .dappy on Sept 29, 2015 21:00:36 GMT 1, Really exciting news! Our Kickstarter campaign for Braddock Tiles launches in just two weeks -- and you're invited to get a first look at our launch party at Doyle New York:
Braddock Tiles Pop-Up Exhibit & Sale Wednesday, October 14, 2015 6:30 pm Doyle New York 175 East 87th Street New York, NY 10128
Free -- Please RSVP
The show will include an exclusive first look at some of our Kickstarter rewards, including the first-ever release of tiles hand-made in Braddock, Pennsylvania by Braddock Tiles.
Plus, we're releasing six new affordable art prints -- by me, Ron English, Tara McPherson, Momo, Lilkool, and Braddock resident Jim Kidd -- that will only be available at this event and through our Kickstarter campaign. Each is a limited edition collaboration Braddock Tiles and the artist.
All proceeds from the show and the Kickstarter campaign go directly towards Braddock Tiles, a ceramics workshop I founded in a formerly-abandoned church in North Braddock, Pennsylvania. Braddock Tiles will hire and train local young adults to hand make 20,000 beautifully colored roofing tiles which will give the church a landmark new roof β the first step in building a community arts center. All that -- plus music, drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and a surprise or two. Don't miss out -- RSVP for this free event today.
See you soon!

Braddock Tiles is a ceramics workshop founded by Swoon in a formerly-abandoned church in North Braddock, Pennsylvania. The basement workshop will hire and train local young adults to hand make 20,000 beautifully colored roofing tiles which will give the church a landmark new roof β the first step in building a community arts center.
Braddock Tiles began in 2009, when Swoon acquired an abandoned 15,000 square foot church building in the rest belt town of North Braddock, located eight miles outside of Pittsburgh, PA. In the years since, Swoon has worked with local residents to stabilize and protect the building.
Today, the church building is in urgent need of a new roof. North Braddock β the home of Andrew Carnegieβs first steel mill β is a proud manufacturing town. By creating a professional ceramics workshop in the church basement, Braddock Tiles will create good jobs still struggling with the long legacy of deindustrialization.
Swoonβs October 14th exhibition & sale at Doyle New York will include the first line of ceramic tiles designed by Swoon and produced by Braddock Tilesβ artisans in North Braddock, PA.
The October 14th show will also include Swoonβs signature larger-than-life portraits of Braddock residents, as well as affordable prints by over 70 artists, including Shepard Fairey, Dustin Yellin, Molly Crabapple, Ricky Powell, and Swoon.
All sales benefit The Heliotrope Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Swoon founded in 2015 to further the values and vision of her community-based work.

Swoon πΊπΈ Contemporary Art β’ Street Art β’ Art For Sale, by .dappy on Oct 6, 2015 22:07:00 GMT 1, On October 13, in conjunction with Swizz Beatz, the Heliotrope Foundation will launch a Kickstarter campaign to bring the Braddock Tiles workshop into the world.
What is Braddock Tiles?
Braddock Tiles is a ceramics workshop inside a beautiful abandoned church in North Braddock, PA. When it's operational, it will create jobs while transforming the church into a beautiful public space where people can learn, play and work with dignity. With your support, Braddock Tiles will open for business, employing people to make 20,000 colorful roof tiles and complete the church roof.
What will the Kickstarter raise money for?
Your contributions help us renovate the church basement and buy equipment to open the Braddock Tiles ceramics workshop.
Help us meet our initial goal of $50,000 and we'll have the resources to renovate the church basement and make it a great place to work.
Help us meet our stretch goal of $100,000 and we'll renovate the basement and purchase kilns, mixers, shelves, clay and other supplies to get up and running in Spring 2016.
Why make ceramic tiles?
The church is in urgent need of a new roof, so we can stop the progress of decay, renovate the ground floor, and open it the public as a community center. All the affordable roofing materials we could find contain toxic heavy metals and are imported from China.
North Braddock is a proud manufacturing town, but people are suffering from the collapse of the US steel industry and other major employers. Those good jobs have gone overseas. Given this, it didnβt seem right to import something we could make ourselves.
What is our mission in North Braddock, PA?
We believe that by opening a small tile factory and turning an abandoned relic into a community center, we can create a place that changes peopleβs lives for the better, and bring pride to a town thatβs been fighting to stay strong ever since the local steel industry collapsed.
