Swoon - Snow Blossoms Print, by nobokov on Feb 22, 2017 16:41:09 GMT 1, Library Street Collective is happy to announce a new print release by Caledonia Curry (Swoon). Titled Snow Blossoms, the 19-color print is reminiscent of Curry's recent Detroit exhibition, The Light After. This immersive installation led the viewer through the phenomena of life's transition into death and featured hundreds of hand-cut snowflakes as well as intricate mylar portraits, including one of the artist's mother that is especially close to her heart:
โWhen my mother passed away in 2013, I was asleep at the time. I awoke inside a dream to see falling snow. The snow started to open up into blossoms of light as it passed through my body, and it carried with it my mother's voice. I woke up knowing that my mother had passed away, but I felt a little crazy for believing such a thing possible. My sister called shortly after to confirm that my mom had indeed passed. In the years following this intensely strange and profound experience, I discovered through research that it was a rare but extant phenomenon called the โempathetic death experience.โโ
Curry describes Snow Blossoms as the visual manifestation of her experience; โIt's a big topic, but I think that the people who the concept resonates with will appreciate seeing an artist trying to take it on,โ said Swoon. โAnd the people who don't know or care to explore these phenomena can hopefully still appreciate the decorative tranquility.โ Coinciding with The Light After, Swoon and Detroit artist Baba Wayne completed a collaborative mural in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood, with Snow Blossoms as backdrop for their unified portrait work. The community initiative was presented by the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and Library Street Collective, and is located at 14635 East Jefferson, Detroit.

This is pretty, with a great story...but personally it seems a bit wallpapery, hence a lower price point. That said, I do like it. Is the first image the "hand finished", drops of paint on it?

I think Swoon's work looks best when it's worn and weathered, so some different effects would be more appealing to me. The price is very fair on these so that's really awesome. And yes, POP!NK prints some great stuff.
I believe the hand finished prints are all sold though, so no one hold your breath for one of those at this point. Trying to alleviate unnecessary anxiety for anyone chomping at the bit for a shot at one.

The image also seemed to lack a real focal point for me...maybe a little visually flat - just a personal opinion

I actually like the fact that you've got the classic Swoon patterns to focus on ... Dont get me wrong I love her portraits however I like the fact that her patterns are the Star of the Show for once..

I think her variants tend to show the true brilliance of her work and it allows the collector to buy the version that really speaks to them.

If you read the details of the print release, it states that "with Snow Blossoms as backdrop for their unified portrait work"
for the work that was completed in Detroit. This may help explain why you get that wallpapery feel from the print.
As always, Pop!nked prints don't come across on computer as nearly as well as they do in person. i don't expect anything less than the best with this release.

It's the same paper and weight that POP!NK uses for Pose's editions, which are also sent flat.
