2007 - Year for Street ART?, by pezlow on Mar 21, 2007 14:34:11 GMT 1, One of the beautiful things about this scene (as opposed to the majority of the art world) is the affordability of much of the work. Many of the screenprints I have bought over the last year or so were, in my opinion, excellent value for money. But I do fear that this might change. The (only) new releases from POW this year - from Faile and Nick Walker were ยฃ250 and ยฃ175 respectively. Black Rat Press (although, I understand, great quality) are charging even higher sums for some of their prints. Faile's recent releases were about double the price of what they were charging last year.
There are still some great buys out there - particularly from SoS and the swoon print (although I'm still waiting for that). But my fear is that with the huge prices on the secondary market many will simply be priced out. I don't criticise the artists at all for getting closer to market prices for their work. But the days of the affordable print may be coming to an end.

'the days of the affordable print may be coming to an end'
not necessarily has to be truth .. let's hope we'll see some new talents this year out there and not just long established artists ..
and just yesterday I've got me three prints from STOT21stCplanB @ ยฃ20 each .. bargain
as it was said earlier this should be a good year for street art and not for a business with street art

2007 - Year for Street ART?, by slowmo on Mar 21, 2007 15:11:01 GMT 1, A sure fire sign for how this is all developing is that the street art tag is now outdated, I heard a report on I think Faile where the whole thing was being referred to as Urban Contemporary.

2007 - Year for Street ART?, by onemandown72 on Mar 21, 2007 15:44:56 GMT 1, Surely the beauty of all of street art/ mainstream art is that it changes & moves. This clearly the case, and as the more recognised and established street artists move into more mainstream arenas this leaves room for new street art and everything moves on. People have been drawing on walls since they could piss on them, and this will never change. It's about the only interesting form of inclusive social comment that you see.

2007 - Year for Street ART?, by saltandiron on Mar 21, 2007 15:54:52 GMT 1, I wouldn't say it was the only interesting form of inclusive social commentary that you see but I'd definitely agree that its one of the best, and I'd also agree with the thrust of what you're saying. Where there is space left by the street artists who have started to do more gallery based stuff it's going to be filled by new people doing their own thing, hopefully in new and slightly different ways.

2007 - Year for Street ART?, by RBK on Mar 21, 2007 16:01:44 GMT 1, I have a big home and even I'm running out of wall space. I think people are buying for the sake of buying. No offense to a lot of the artists out there - but in 5-10 years, are you really going to think the print you bought is that great? We all get caught up in the hype, worry that we will miss the next 'Banksy', I would guess many of us are collectors by nature, etc.
I think the most interesting poll would be how many of the prints that you own are actually hanging on the wall? I'm proud to say my ratio is pretty good.

Yeah, what a load of tosh, came out of the wooster spring avenue show. Nice one Wooster for trying to pigeon hole a whole movement through a blog. Street art it is, street art it remains. Bunch of girls scared of the graffiti link methinks.

All my unsigned prints are in a giant stamp like catalogue under the bed, the signed ones are locked in the big safe behind the fake Monet and the canvasses are in the bank vault.. hoping to get them on rotation as the prices rise

2007 - Year for Street ART?, by beejoir1 on Mar 27, 2007 7:42:02 GMT 1, I love Swoon's work which is why I'm not keen on her charity print - completely loses the sense of the original piece especially with the change in medium (from cut-out to print??) ripper1331 has posted a pic of a nice Swoon piece he has up in his house on the GYBOFTL thread (p31). I'm planning on a little night-time visit...
Got Swoon out in Thailand next week, can't wait to do some paste ups with her, might even see a SoS print
