I also thought the Steve Powers result was very strong - over a grand for one of his prints must be a first.

The bids on the tenner all came from ARTSY on the website it said before the sale started current bid ยฃ3,800 which means it was all absentee bids on the ARTSY site. They used the Di-Faced as the banner ad for the sale, so my guess is two people just saw it and went nuts bidding against each other. It happens. I was in a sale recently where a print that normally makes ยฃ1500 at most sold for ยฃ17,000! I watched it happen two madmen that just wouldn't let the other have it - my banana is bigger than your banana |

That's collusion by dealers, not the auction houses. The auction houses don't own the material they are middlemen who sell it in a public forum. The collusion is the dealers who band together to pump up prices to increase the value of their stock holding, as was seen with a lot of that terrible West Coast Zombie Abstraction of a few years ago, which has crashed heavily now. |

Forum auctions really need to double and triple check their descriptions. Not the first time they did this.
